Goodness, I'm behind.  Took the day off work on Friday, then spent the afternoon at an impromptu visit to a spa in Evergreen (up in the mountains about an hour from here).  It was a gorgeous day so I took a little walk around a wetlands area before I headed up to the spa.  Between my mani/pedi and massage, I stepped out onto the patio to enjoy the sun.  It was so delicious, taking in the sounds of the wind blowing in the pine trees and the birds singing, the lovely view, and the light breeze ruffling through my hair.....on my legs.

So, back to Manateeland.

Loved all the chicken stories!!  A friend of mine got 3 chickens, who she named Boiled, Fried, and Poached.  All three were hens and she was thrilled when they started laying.  Per city ordinance, we can have chickens and miniature goats.  I'd love to have some goats.  I'm sure the dogs would love them and it would definitely provide exercises for both species, as well as possibly taking some pressure off the cat, who is constantly herded by Pippin and chased by Shanti.  Sadly, our yard is too small so it's not going to happen.  We could support bees but it's not legal.  We just have to settle for having a very bee-friendly yard with lots of places for bees to feed.

Salty, I did read Alex and Me.  Such a great book!  There's another really interesting book, by Virginia Morrell, called Animal Wise: How We Know Animals Think and Feel. It talks about Alex, but also about rats giggling, ants teaching other ants, archer fish aiming to spit water in people's eyes and all kinds of other fascinating examples of how animals have more capacity than we often think.

Hope all you racers had fun.  Steve, be careful with that foot!!

DL'ers, please heal.  I'm happy I'm finally off the list!!  I'm *very carefully* easing back into training and incorporating the strength training from PT.

Re: school lunches, there are a number of schools here that have started gardens.  The kids work in the garden, then the kitchen incorporates the fresh veggies into the lunches.  It's especially good for the poorer schools where most of the kids get free lunch and have little access to fresh veggies at home.  The kids love the gardening and are eating better.  Plus they take home what they learn in school and help educate their parents on how to grow and cook more healthy meals.  It seems to be working out really well.

I'm still super glum (I think that's to be expected). Focusing on the positive, on what I CAN do, and doing it, keeps me just this side of wanting to jump off the (thankfully in recent days more proverbial) cliff.

Some nights I can sleep; some I can't. (Recovery from the horrid tropo diseases tends to be that way anyway).

Between the utter shambles of the most important systems here in Indonesia and that even with the utmost protection I will lose the numbers game with disease over time, I'm thinking of bugging out more and more (it's been percolating for a while, and lots of discussion with my sister too). The vast majority of Indonesians are the loveliest, friendliest, most beautiful people you will find anywhere on Earth, and discrete number of those who can and do affect the major systems is pretty much in single digits.

It does seem like living there has really taken a toll on you, body and soul, but I can't imagine you leaving without a lot of mixed feelings.  I assume you'd stay somewhere relatively close so as to be close to Mutti and the rest of your family.  Maybe Perth?

I'm glad the cliff is getting more proverbial these days.  You're a Manatee, not a lemming, my dear.   So sorry things are so hard right now.  Sending you lots of love and hugs and light and silliness.  Especially silliness.  (Speaking of silliness, how in the world have you been keeping Smoky out of trouble with your TV on the blink due to water damage?!)

Sorry to hear you're still struggling Yanti. Just know that you will get back to 100% soon! I'm sure it must be very hard thinking about leaving, but you're right that it will get the better of you eventually. I hope you're able to be at peace with whatever decision you make.

I'm sure that this is probably a very hard decision for you to come to, but I suspect that for your long term health living somewhere with far less tropical diseases and better sanitation would be a good idea.
I know somewhere reasonably close that operates on the same time zone and where you could get back quickly if the need arises, there are some other benefits too

I agree with this.  You've probably contracted some tropical diseases that have popped up in seasons of House, MD. during your time there.  You need to be wherever you can be happy AND healthy.

You have contracted, endured, and [mostly] recovered from more scary, tropical diseases than one person should have to deal with.  Surely it will be difficult to leave the beautiful country and beautiful people of Indonesia, but you don't have to leave forever, you can still visit.  The bond will still be there.  This sounds like another instance of doing what is right for you and your well-being.  Will Mutti remain where she is?

Thanks, gang.  Just read back through my story and realized that I got some of my dates wrong.  No matter.  The end result is the same. You rockin', funny, amazing Manatees have played a big part in keeping me going, encouraging me when I have doubts, celebrating my triumphs with me, and keeping me laughing.  Thanks for all you do and who you are.  I'm so glad I can give back in kind!!

Good Morning, Manatees!  (and a happy, slightly belated bday to Judi )

Beautiful weekend around here. Great trail ride on Saturday morning...even took my nemesis trail, followed by a visit to the local chili cook-off and meeting Wildman Phil with his critters (http://www.desertwildlife.net/stumpymain.html . Yesterday we took a family jaunt to the mountain to test Rio's hiking skills and the 80's lockers. Both were a success

Hehehe...not sure they would know what to do with her.

And, along with others' sentiments, agree that maybe it's time to make some serious changes. The old saying of You're no good to anybody if you're not good to yourself. Frustration with your health being a limiter to being a helper is not going to help your health  (sorry, that's just fun to say aloud
