kickitinok - 2009-12-18 4:20 PM Holy cow this group posts a lot! I was trying to catch-up on the four pages posted since last night, and during this there was an add'l one page of posts added! Haha! Awesome to have such an active team!

When is this virtual tri? Just remember that I am a true beginner in swim and run, and I don't want anyone to lose because of me!

On a positive note, my swim is getting better. Head position and breathing still leave a lot to be desired, but I'm able to swim further and longer in between rests already....after only three weeks of training.

Still looking for a local OWS before Lone Star.

There are no losers in our virtual tri. Just varying degrees of success. I f you come out of it  with a PB then you win. I f you compete and don't get a PB then you win. It all about having some fun while training.  and of course the trash talk that goes with it and the win

Swim training question:

I am trying to figure out the best way to train for the swim.  I get one day a week of drills with my TNT group; however, I still have two or three other swim sessions to get in each week.  I was thinking of doing one workout as a distance swim - anywhere from 1200-2000 yds easy swim; the other I was thinking of keeping it short and working on speed - you know the whole 10x50 and 10x100 type stuff.  Does that make sense?  Also, what to do about the fourth workout in a week?  Intermediate distance maybe (5 x400 or the like) or should I work on othe weak parts of my swim (sighting, billateral breathing, etc...)?

If Lone Star is your first A race of the year then I would not worry about doing any speedwork at this point.  If your TNT group is focusing on drills I would do those same drills in your other workouts for the next few weeks.  Work on your body roll, head postion, etc.  You will see greater/quicker improvement by working on your stroke than you would by doing 5x400 with an in-efficient stroke.  If you want to do some longer swims you can...just mix the drills into the longer swim( maybe a 400 doing a 100 of your four fav drills.)As your stroke begins to improve you can then start to add some longer swims(w/o drills) and intervals (10x50s/10x100s).  When you add the intervals I would start with longer rest b/w repeats (so you can maintain your stroke) then steadly decrease the rest over a few weeks, as long as you can maintain your stroke.

Long story short...focus on your stroke to become more effecient...which will lead to becoming faster.

Robert

Actually I think it will be my second A race of the year - first should be in Hawaii at Lavaman... (if I can raise enough funds for TNT).  Did you used to swim competitively?  I saw one of your goals was to be first out of the water  - you got to be a great swimmer to do that...

Andy--I did swim in college and coached club swimming for 15 years...haven't been coaching for about 6 years.  Stroke work was always a big part of the beginning of the season both as a swimmer and a coach.

John--I think Andy and I are about 40 minutes apart...like driving from Katy to Kingwood.

losta - 2009-12-18 3:30 PM When will we have the virtual sprint tri?

DougRob - 2009-12-18 12:27 PM With 23 new members and 90% of the 09 mg returning, we should have a lot more teams for our virtual sprint triathlon this year.

For the new members, we broke in to 4 teams last year and each swam a given numner of yards, ran 5K and biked 12 miles. We then averaged the results for each team to determine the winner. Treadmill runs and trainer rides did NOT count. Pool swims were ok.

Team number 1 won it all, although the 5K run killed me and went downhill from there for the season. But with marathon training well underway maybe I can post a reasonable number without killing myself for the following weeks.

Doug

Yes.  When will this take place?  Looking forward to it  ...  I remain really impressed by the exchanges -- both in terms of support and in terms of sheer volume -- among this group.

William

Check out a couple of the articles from Infinit, primarily calculating run calorie needs and osmolality.  I was able to calculate my nutritional requirements for events really well using those two articles.   Not only is the number of calories critical, but the timing and the make-up....get too many simple sugars and you could have big GI Issues to worry about.  Everyone is different, so experiment during training.  Let me know if you have any questions.

By the way, I am not necessarily pushing Infinit.  I like it for marathons, but don't use it for triathlon.

When is our virtual sprint tri?  That sounds fun and it will be good for motivation!

Suzy, thanks for sharing your nutritional knowledge.  I will be asking you questions about that as I increase distances this year.

If we do another virtual tri, the gimp in the group needs a running alternative......ain't going backwards after 6 weeks of no running.

Suzy:

That information was great.  Definitely gives me a starting point for managing my nutrition in a more systematic way.  I am going to start experimenting with it this weekend (unfortunately on a treadmill and trainer because of the snow storm hitting us).  I really appreciate it.

Have a great weekend.

I use Infinit on the bike mostly.  Even used it for the IM.  Best tasting stuff out there and I love not needing to take Endurolytes too.  Everything all together makes it simple.  It's a good idea to have different formulas for the different race distances if you change it up a lot.

I've been a swimmer for a gazillion years, which either makes me qualified to answer this or makes my answers irrelevant because I don't have typical swimming issues!! But when I am swimming I always mix up everything in workouts. I do a nice long warm-up set with swim/kick/pull (usually something like 500 swim, 200 kick w/board, 300 pull). Then I sort-of go with my mood but I'll often have a set of drills, a set of 50's or 100's, and if I want to up the yardage I'll do a longer set of 200's to 400's. One of my favorite things to do is some kind of a ladder, either mixing in kick/pull/drill or speed differences.

Example:

25 kick
50 drill
75 pull
100 fast (and then go back down)

Or

50 swim moderate
100 with 50 drill/50 perfect stroke
150 with 50 easy/50 fast/50 easy (or 50 drill/50 perfect/50 fast)
200 fast (or go 100 perfect/100 fast or whatever) (and then go back down)

You can do all sorts of ladder variations -- I think they're fun. You can totally play around with it and keep 'em short or really long (100-200-300-400-300-200-100 = 1600 yards; repeat the 400 and it's 2K [duh]).

I like these work outs...just need to find that perfect stroke!  If you could describe it, that would be great!Wink

I'm originally from Cleveland as well. My son has all the Cleveland gear too.. I'm still a die-hard Cleveland sports fan (unfortunately) and always have my heart ripped out. My wife thinks Cleveland sports is forever doomed..

Yeah, you and me both!  It's sad 'cuz they have such a die hard fan following.  My hubby is the same way.  He made sure to tell everyone that it was ME who picked Sam's outfit...personally I think he's a closet fan though!
So, where are you from exactly?  I grew up and still have family in the Painesville area but claim Cleveland since no one else knows where Painesville is!

You talk about die hard fans. I've been a Raider fan about 30 years. It's kinda like cheering for the Maple Leafs up here. Every once in a while they win one they weren't supposed to and keep you coming back.

True but at least the Raiders have won a championship within 30 yrs. Cleveland hasn't won a single championship since 1964! Unless you count indoor soccer, and that was in the mid 80's.

No, the Cavs and Indians just keep taking us to the brink making us all think they might actually make it and then it never fails...our hopes are crushed!
