No racing for the D'Alessio's this weekend - thank goodness!  We need a break.  My son has his first soccer game.

On a separate note: foot pain.  I've dnoe some onling searching and can't find a reference to this type of pain.  The ball of my left foot is sore.  It's an area that can get sore either running or biking so it's nothing new per se.  But 2 weeks ago when running on a trail I stepped on a rock in just the right spot.  Ever since then it's been bothering me more.  No rythm or reason - meaning it can hurt when I run or not.  Sometimes the pain goes away during the run and sometimes like right now it hurts more after a run.  I think it's just a bruise but can they last that long?  There is nothing visible, no swelling and the pain is very centrailized.

Andy, I agree with Tony about not racing in the wetsuit but yes on getting the practice in.  Personally, I can take or leave the wetsuit. I like the extra warmth and buoyancy but it hasn't really improved my times.  Tony is right in that it changes your stroke and you need to work with that.  Have a great time regardless.

Linda- THE DUKE!!!    I have some friends (and a husband) planning a 100 mile bike ride on Sunday and they were taking about riding the Duke course 2x.  I had to remind them what weekend this is!!!! Crazy fools!  Best of luck to you. I hope all this rain doesn't make the water too nasty. But on the positive side, the air temperature should be so much nicer for the run.  I'll come down and watch - Doug, where are you volunteering?

Chris, Roni, Jeremy  -ROCK ON!   OUR MG IS LOGGING SOME SERIOUS MILES THIS WEEKEND!!!

Sam, I have a deep foot bruise that is still tender but there aren't any visible signs of bruising.  Do you have a hot spot from your bike shoes that the race last weekend might have aggrevated?

That's good to hear.  It must just be a bruise.  Actually I remember this weekend thinking about how good my feet felt during the race.  LOL

My whole body is still trying to recover from the race and long run so that's probably why it hurts more today.

Chris/Barry, have you guys been checking on the weather situation for your race?

Georgia has had some nasty weather recently, flooding in Atlanta and such.

Tracy:

Since I volunteered so early they gave me my choice. From 10-1 I am at the finish line (so I get to see what the fast people look like at the end!) Then I am at T1 to ensure that only the racers leave with bikes and equipment from 1PM on.

I have a half marathon this weekend.  I'd set some goals, but I'm pretty sure those went out the window when the tendonitis in my foot returned a couple weeks ago.  My new plan is to set a pace that is comfortably hard and see where that gets me.  Other than that, I'd just like to improve on last year's time.

My sister-in-law is coming up to do the run too.  Her longest event prior to this is a 10k - I hope she does well.  More importantly, I hope she's happy with her race - I think she may have some fairly lofty goals.

Thanks for the advice on the wetsuit everyone.  I own a Neosport- it is a sleeveless shorty, so it should add some bouyancy and warmth with hindering my stroke too much.  I think I will take it to the lake on Sat morning early to see how it goes and decide from there.

Also, had a great run this morning - 5 miler - no walk breaks!!!!  10:20 pace.  Improved on my last time on the same route by 8 minutes!  I think the cooler temps helped alot - it was 59 degrees this morning.

For those of you with HIM experience (or training experience), how many calories do you take in per hour on race day?  Between GE, gels and a cliff bar, I am taking in an average of 200 per hour.  Obviously it is kind of late to change now, but I might throw in a extra gel somewhere, like maybe the bike or something.  Here is my plan:

Swim:
Gel before

Bike:
1 cliff bar
1 gel @ mile 30
1 gel @ mile 50
2 20oz bottles GE+ 1 Water

Run:
1 gel @ mile 2
1 gel @ mile 8
Add one more if I need it.

Total:  1240 calories

While on our trail run last night, Birdy asked me about your plan...

I can't quite reconcile the 1240 calories however:
100 gel before swim
240 Clif Bar
200 gels during bike
250 2 x 20 oz GE (50 cal/8 oz)
200 gels during run

=990 calories

1240 calories might be a little high, but if it's closer to 1000 as above, I think it looks pretty decent. I'm assuming you've worked with your gels, GE, and especially the Clif Bar (I can't personally take solids during a race, but lots of people do) during your training, yes? If so, I think you're good to go.

You're at almost 700 cals during the bike. I don't know how tall/big you are, but based on your goal times, that seems just about right. Maybe keep an extra gel just in case and really evaluate how you feel at the 20 mile mark. If you're feeling light, add the gel and keep the rest of your nutrition plan in place; I like the gel at mile 50. 20 mph for 6 mi = 18 minutes, which should make sure that it's absorbed by the time you hit T2.

200 cals on the run might be a little lean though. I think I'd bring an extra gel just in case, and I'd highly recommend a gel flask so you can take it in as needed. I like the first gel at mile 2 so you can give your stomach a little time to settle in. The 6 mile gap between 2 and 8 might be a little large though; that could be upwards of 45-50 minutes depending on your speed. I might bump your second gel up to mile 6 so you're looking at closer to 30 minutes. Then I'd maybe look at maybe a 1/2 gel (which is why it's nice to have a gel flask) at mile 10, which should hit you for the final mile and give you a nice kick to the end.

GE should do for most of your electrolytes, but maybe supplement with Thermolytes/Endurolytes if necessary? Looks like the weather in Augusta this weekend will be low to mid 80s... ooh, but with possible thunderstorms! That'll be exciting.

For solids during a race, I'm big on the Sharkies!  Gummy 'candy' with electrolytes in vitamins in it.  I think they are just filling enough to satisfy and just sweet enough to make you want to also drink some water.  140 calories put's it close to a fruit or Clif bar.  But the added benefit that it won't melt or get yucky.

I take these when I go for long rides and I haven't had any Gi problems.  If you chew them up they really don't event lay heavy in your gut.  They also make some for kids with a sour flavor - I like those too.  The sour ones seem to take your mind off things for a while.

Anyone else try these?

Just wanted to check in and wish good luck to everyone who's racing this weekend!  I seem to have lost my motivation for swimming and bikingFrown.  Still running due to some races coming up in the next couple of weeks, but there's just no incentive for me to get to the pool in the morning or out on my bike since I won't be doing any tri's until at least June.  I thought having a maintenance plan set up would help, but so far it's not working.  The funny thing is, I enjoy swimming and biking once I get out there, it's just the getting out that seems to be hard.  I'm hoping that one of the local rec centers will have the indoor mini-sprints that they did last winter again this year.  They won't be until Feb/March but at least it will give me a goal.

I don't think there is anything wrong w/ taking a break and recharging your batteries whether it is physical or mental.  I am so happy to be done w/ the pool for a month or so.  If I feel like going great if not no pressure to drag myself to the pool.

I have to admit I am skipping my half-marathon this weekend.  (I say as I duck and cover)

My dreams...that things slow down around here so I can get back to doing something other than driving kids around.  Last week Tiller's only day off was Sunday.  Otherwise, in 6 days, he had 8 sporting events.  In addition to school and his extra activities there.  Do I need to even mention the girls' schedules?

Actually this weekend will be used to get ready for Gatlinburg next weekend.  Tiller has a baseball tourney down there to end the season.

I haven't tried those specifially but have use the GU version and a few others.  I thought for what they provided they were too bulky to carry, I could get more nutrition out of a gel which was much easier to carry.

At least with the GU chomps or whatever they were called, it seemed like I had to eat the whole bag to get anything out of them.

Suzy, watch out for the nude cyclists in Times Square!

When we were there this summer two dudes, naked as could be, coming cruising down the street on bikes.  Of course the place goes crazy and cops are running everywhere to catch them.  And I mean right in Times Square - 7th Ave and 46th Street

If you ask me, or my three kids, what the best part of our vacation (a 10 day trip that included Atlantic City, an Orioles games, and Washington DC) we would also say the "naked bikers"  My 4 year old still tells random peoples about them.

Have fun!

SSMinnow - 2009-09-22 7:57 PM Ok, the man and I are headed to NYC tomorrow mid day so I need to post the question tonight........

Who is racing this weekend? What are your goals? your dreams? you fears?

And I know at least two of you who are ready to kick some butt!  Good luck Chris and Barry.  I will be thinking about you all weekend! Good Karma coming your way.  Wakka-wakka

I have a tri this weekend!  Stonebridge - 750 OWS, 12mi bike, 5k...  did the swim/run as the aquathon last week.  Looking for a goal time of 1:30 or less...  18' swim, 4' T1, 35' bike, 2' T2, 31 run.  From looking at the course, the transitions look long.

Also trying to decide on wetsuit if it is legal...  I haven't practiced in one and I think the time savings on the course might be completed negated by the time involved in getting the suit off.  On the other hand, a race in the suit would be good because my olympic two weeks later will be wetsuit legal and I will wear one then...

Help me MG - what am I missing from this decision?

Andy, sorry to be late to the party, but....wear the wetsuit!  I have had a wet suit for a year now, but today was the first day I have ever worn it.  Tried it in the pool today to get ready to wear it in my "race" on Sunday.   I was shocked to find my 100's were over 10 sec faster than "normal" with no effort what-so-ever.  Dang I could cruise and be fast.  See if you can't get a little time with it before your race to make sure it fits.  I do have to find info on getting it off...that may cost me some time
