Better now that I'm progressing with the whole "return to run" thing. It's not the way that I intended to start the year but it'll be fine
Run without hurting myself
I'm using a coach
I may do an HIM in May if things continue to progress. Then I have Lake Logan HIM in August, White Lake international distance in September and IM Chattanooga in September. |

I hope the week treats you well. 1. At this point in time I don't have any plans to do any tris this year. That might change come December when the tri season restarts here, but for now it's running for me again. I am looking more at shorter stuff this year and improving speed (cause I'm pretty slow). 2. The biggest planned adjustment for the year is to run more often (that means actually do the plan). after Dopey I gave myself permission to just run whenever and what ever in January. The new plan starts this week. 3. No coach for me, I am using a combination of Hal Higdon and Bary P plans. Basically I am taking the distance of Hal's long runs and using that as the long run length in a Barry P 3-2-1 kind of setup. The plan is that on one of the short days I will do hills and on another speed. 4. I have a few definite races planned for the year, mainly trail runs with a couple of road HMs (I want to break 2:30) and most likely another marathon in October. Oh and my mum signed us up for a run 2018km in 2018 challenge which means from now until the end of December I have to average 40.3km per week. Edited by StaceyK 2018-02-05 8:42 AM |

The last 5 miles were a head game & the last 2 were just flat out ugly, but it got done. Bunch of friends ran a race Friday night & today on Tybee Island. 5k on Fri night, 10k this morning, followed by a HM, a 2.8 mile beach run & then a 1 mile 'fun' run. If you finish all 5, you get a 6th medal for 26.2 miles. Word is the beach part was the worst. Wow, that's a full weekend of running! |

Just curious. I think we should have an all manatees who are doing Chatt meet up at the camp This is probably more than you' re looking for but - I don't have a very solid reason for why I picked the plan! I scrolled through some and thought what he offered looked good! But in general, I think my plan from last year was actually really good, it's just that it is only a 23 week plan and I want something more structured in the 7 weeks preceding that start. I know going into the plan last year I was behind the 8 ball because I had no base on the bike or run b/c of my injury and then it took a few weeks before I was physically feeling like I could do all the workouts as I should, so this year I'd be in a lot better shape were I to use the old plan. BUT, I don't want to take that chance, hence the longer plan. In addition, b/c of all the extraneous stuff, I felt like I really needed a few more long bikes and runs. I felt good with the individual bikes and runs, but felt I needed more endurance for each to have a good , or at least not sucky race. So, erring on the side of caution, I picked a plan with more biking. Lumley looks like he has a good reputation, so I figured I'd use his plan. Plus the plan comes with email access to him. In my usual fashion there was a bit of a mix up - when I looked at the plan outline at first it showed 3 days of each sport. When I bought it it shows on average 4 bikes, 3 runs and 2 swims. Turns out the first time I looked I looked at the novice plan. I bought the advanced!! 2 swims is not enough, so I will be making modifications!! |

Expert 1694 Illinois | Subject: RE: Manatees Thanks Chris for posting these questions. It's helpful and interesting to me (and probably everyone) to see what others are doing. How is everyone coming along on preparations for this year? I feel I'm doing well for the year ahead. The smart trainer and Zwift have been real game changers for me as far as quality of indoor biking workouts. What types of adjustments are being made in training plans at this point? My coach has me doing the Zwift Beginner FTP builder program. I had seen on Strava that she was using this program herself, and she felt that it had great value and added it to my schedule. With my first race on March 3 (weather permitting, as Illinois can be pretty volatile in late winter), I'm getting into a big build block Who is using a coach? I am. I need the accountability and someone to push me. I'm going into the third year with the same coach and feel like she gets me. Sometimes I wonder if I could just figure out all the scheduling stuff myself, but I love that she varies the weight workouts depending on the time of year. What types of solid race plans do you have in place? No triathlons for the foreseeable future. In 2016 I fell in love with gravel riding and have focused on that. Over on Slowtwitch are some rumblings about a possible "all road, i.e. gravel" triathlon series being developed. I would be all over that. March 3 - Dirty south Roubaix gravel grinder in Alto Pass, Illinois. April 28 - Louisville Half Marathon (with Laura and Robin!!!) May 5-6 Tour of Hermann Gravel race in Hermann, Missouri June 3 -- Dirty Kanza 200 miler in Emporia, KS August (maybe Gravel Worlds in Lincoln, NE) October - Cuban Gravel Fest, Cuba MO |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees How is everyone coming along on preparations for this year? Everything was going really well until my dad died. I was in really good bike and swim shape and gradually building my run back (had gotten to 1:20 for my long run) after almost four months off running. Now I'm not doing the race I'd been preparing for and my time really isn't my own--I have very limited time in the States to handle a lot of things. Trying to squeeze in 30 minutes of running here and there, maybe a few trainer rides. What types of adjustments are being made in training plans at this point? Well, I'm not doing a HIM that I trained for since October and was supposed to happen in two weeks. Not following a plan right now. I will try to get back to more structured training by the end of the month. I haven't been swimming or doing strength here, as I'm concerned about picking up the flu or another bug at the crowded facility. Who is using a coach? I've had a coach since the end of 2015, but I'm taking February off coaching. My time is just not my own day to day and have other priorities right now. Have told her I'll be back in touch when I get back to Vietnam. What types of solid race plans do you have in place? Nothing in my life is "solid" at this point, but since I will be returning to Vietnam, I will probably sign up for Vietnam 70.3 (in May). It's doubtful I'll return to Vietnam next year; am probably going to need to take a "gap year" while we figure out things like job, house, where to live. (Mom doesn't want to stay in Idaho long-term, nor do I, particularly. The move was Dad's idea.) Assuming we're going to be here in the summer, will probably do Calgary again. It's a beautiful drive up there (through Banff) and they have a new, supposedly faster, bike course. I had thought about a late fall IM, but don't think that is in the cards this year due to our family situation. Possibly a destination HIM somewhere warm in late fall or early winter, if Mom wants to travel. Right now my biggest goal is finding a foster home for poor Shelby until mid-June. (For those who remember, the cat we adopted just before Christmas.), plus getting all the finances, taxes, and utilities under control. |

I hope the week treats you well. Doing pretty well sticking with my training plan but not as well with weight loss. Might have something to do with the tendinitis that's been creeping into my heel. What types of adjustments are being made in training plans at this point? My primary goal for this year is to build run endurance. Trying to balance that and not aggravating the tendinitis. Also trying to find a good balance between high intensity training, strength training, and endurance training. The high intensity seems to help more with my weight loss goals. Adjustments happen weekly. Guess that's part of being fairly new to triathlon training. Who is using a coach? No coach yet. What types of solid race plans do you have in place? River Run (15k) on March 10. St. Anthony's Oly Tri on Apr 29. Edited by kbhanson3 2018-02-05 9:18 AM |

436 | Subject: RE: Manatees Hey everyone! I just got back from a weekend of skiing in CO which was lot of fun. Any other skiers in the group? How is everyone coming along on preparations for this year? - Not great, not terrible. I don't have anything officially on the calendar until later this year so I'm working on a combination of building and maintaining fitness until it's time to crank it up for a race. What types of adjustments are being made in training plans at this point? - I'm working on doing more sprint and speed work in hopes of becoming a faster runner. I'm not seeing any real improvements yet but I'm hoping that by sticking with it and running at least 3 times a week I'll be able to hold my speed without my HR going through the roof. Who is using a coach? - I've never used a coach. I'm very self motivated and with all the free resources available online I have a hard time justifying the expense. What types of solid race plans do you have in place? - Officially just Age Group Nationals in Cleveland which isn't until August. I'm also leaning towards doing Waco 70.3 and will do a few local Olympic races once the season gets started down here in Dallas. |

My goals at this point are pretty minimal, just keep adding and making tiny improvements here and there. I figured the beginning of month 2 seems like as good a time as any other to ask, so here goes:
I hope the week treats you well. How is everyone coming along on preparations for this year? I took the winter to work on my weakness, my run. Since October 7th (which is when I began my prep for my March 3rd marathon), I have missed one workout and cut one a mile short and bailed on my first 22 miler after throwing up at mile 10--I think I was fighting off a stomach bug). I've realized rather quickly that consistency really is king. While I've had a few long runs (16+ miles) that have really sucked, I have improved not only my ability to go long, I have also improved my speed dramatically. I have learned of the value of track workouts and tempo workouts, and how they really do improve your overall running ability. I'm also trying to drop some unnecessary pounds. Down 9 pounds since Nov. 1. What types of adjustments are being made in training plans at this point? I'm in the final 2 weeks of build before I can taper for my marathon. A mid-range run this Saturday of 14 miles, but the intensity is higher because of the shorter distance (unbelievable to me that 14 miles is now considered a 'shorter' run); thus, 7 miles of it will be at tempo. The week after the marathon, my recovery week is going to consist of a switch to a tri focus by adding in easy bike and swim sessions that week. Then, the build for Augusta 70.3 will begin. I have found that Yoga and Piyo (pilates/yoga fusion) are my very best friends to keep the 47-year-old ouchies at bay. Who is using a coach? I hired a coach, Jeff Lukich with Drive Multisport, in October because after 3 70.3 races where the run totally sucked worse than anything I could ever imagine, I wanted to see what could happen if I actually toed the line as prepared as I could possibly be. We have spent the winter strengthening what I feel is my weakest phase, and we will continue to push hard on the run through the spring, summer and fall. Having a coach has make me incredibly accountable to every workout, plus, he's been incredibly accommodating to my schedule, age and life. The goal is to train smarter and harder vs. more. I plan on sticking with him through at least IM-LOU in 2019. What types of solid race plans do you have in place? I have 3 'big' races on my horizon for 2018. Columbia marathon on March 3rd where I am going to try to take 25 minutes off of my 2013 race time. It's a pretty big PR goal, but I am SO much more prepared than I was 5 years ago; however, the course is a very hilly 2 loop course. End of April I'm racing a HM in a nearby town. The course is flat, and if it's not humid that early in the year, it should be fast. My fastest HM time is 2:14. I'd love to get it close to 2:00-2:05. It's possible with the pace I've been running all winter. End of September is Augusta 70.3. I've had 1 good year (though the run still sucked) and 2 years where it was just survival (2014 I was injured or sick most of the summer and couldn't train & 2017, I came out of a 2.5 year triathlon retirement in late May 2017 (seriously, had not ridden my bike or swam once since September of 2014) and raced. Those 2 years were ugly. Augusta's goal is 6:15. Edited by glfprncs 2018-02-05 3:50 PM |

I started training, but due to spasms and hip pain I have been referred to pt. My apt is in 3 days, not 2 months like I thought that it would be. Had to leave my house due to domestic violence issues and safety concerns. I don't really have anywhere else that's safe for me to talk about this. I know in the tri community there is so much more to all of our lives right now. I don't want this set back to affect my training or my dream of becoming an IronMan. It is my own goal and dream and I don't want to lose sight of those things. when I saw my M-dot sling bag with my things, I knew that I was a strong person and seeing that reminded me that I can overcome this too. Positive thoughts and prayers are welcome. |

Angela, I am so sorry to hear this but so glad to that you were able to leave. I hope that you are in a safe place. Thinking of you. |
