SSMinnow - 2010-04-14 4:15 AM YOO-HOO!!!!  It's time to start thinking about the weekend. WHO's RACING?

WHO's TAPERING?

WHAT ARE THE REST OF YOU PLANNING TO DO?

With all the people that raced last weekend, I thought I would throw in a question to help those that might be racing next weekend...wonder who that is??? what is the one thing you learned in your last race that could help your fellow MG'ers?

Not racing, I think I have a long run of 11 or 12 miles and another long bike hopefully outside.  I actually did learn lots of things from my first race this year but since Suzy asked for just one...I would say for the HIM distance...dial back the bike just a little for the last 20 minutes to set yourself up for a good run, and ease into your run for the first 20 minutes, and then turn it up...I was surprised how good I felt.   Don't worry it'll still suck for the last few miles

Trina, not sure how cold the water will be but I second the no booties, it will screw up your swimming and create drag.  Great idea to bring some old flip flops or better yet, if your hubby will be there, some sneakers and socks, if he can collect them for you

Have fun tapering everyone.

Stan, what the heck was I thinking?  Of course I should come to NY for bagels.  What's the name of the yummy place on the east side in the 30's...

Off for my run if the sun would please rise!!!

I have a 5k at work tomorrow, last fall I ran it at 7:11 miles. Hope to be in the 6s this time.  We have talked about doing a 5k on Sunday as well, knowing the course its pretty flat, I would like to break the 20 minute 5k mark as a mental hurdle.

Looks came in last night, gotta put them on after my doctors apt today to see how the wrist is healing.  (Hopefully well!)

My advise from the final race last year is two part.  1 - It is possible to "bonk" a sprint distance run(5 miles) especially if you are not used to riding very hilly areas and try to push the 18 mile bike too hard.

2 - Be careful not to over hydrate as well, find what works and stick with it.  Running with a sloshy stomach is not good!

fattyfatfat - 2010-04-13 11:09 PM what does it take to get to clearwater?
I'm thinking that a 4:40 will get me there (at least at Steelhead). :30 swim 2:30 bike 1:35 run Run will be the hardest. I think that a standalone 13.1 would be no issues at 7 minute miles (next year), but I don't know how that will be off a hard bike.

For the mere mortals that would like to get to Clearwater...Remember to ALWAYS stay for the roll down.  The year I was at BSLT one of my coaches athletes could have gotten a spot for Clearwater because it rolled down 9 spots to her but she left early.  I think it ended up going to the 11th roll down in her AG before someone accepted it.

my apologies.  i should have asked what it takes in your a/g (M35-39) at the venues you are planning on racing at to qual.

a 3 hour 70.3 pr would be pretty snazzy.

best of luck reaching your goals.

tjtryon - 2010-04-13 9:18 PM Anyone start looking at 2011 yet? I'm hoping I start getting my run speed back, so I think I'm going to try for Clearwater. I'm planning on the following: Galvaston Kansas or Eagleman Steelhead Timberman Branson or Augusta I'll do Branson/Kansas if they have the combo pricing again, else I'll do Eagleman and Augusta. Thoughts? I think I'm currently good with the swim and bike - I just need to drop about 2:45/mile on the run, and be able to sustain it for 13 miles... I think that's going to be somewhat realistic.

No racing yet for me. At least we are training outside now and will probably be running Sat and biking Sun. I am picking up my training pace now to be ready to do my under 3 hour Oly in June.

Kim I think the one you're talking about is Daniel's Bagel on 38th and 3rd.  I heard great things about the place but never tried it, it's far from my morning walking radius.  I've always been partial to Murray's Bagels on 22nd and 8th.  BTW H&H has countrywide delivery.

I leave for a full day and I feel like I am a week behind! Good grief people....

Jeff, my husband and I used to bike together, but the minute I stated training for triathlon he told me I was too fast and won't ride me about 95% of the time.  I hate it.  I would love to do some fun rides, but he thinks he is too slow, too old and too fat.

Kyla, I do love the bike and the color scheme alot!  Like you weren't fast enough!

Not entirely sure how we got on cars but like Steve I have a Toyota--LEXUS SUV and LOVE IT.  Paul has a LEXUS Sedan, an Avalanche and little Jeep....can you tell he likes cars?  One is our up north car and somehow 2 people need 3 cars in Madison.  Not sure how that works.

Texas bound people, nervous? excited? thinking OMG!????  My answer YES!

Sitting in a room with no windows fo 8 hours was torture today.  So much so I get to do it again tomorrow and then call it a rest day in my training plan.  The best thing that happened is I got to run on the Racine70.3 course today....also had a chance to look at Lake Michigan with 20mph winds....YIKES!

Umm a bit TMI. But good to know i guess. Undecided

Love the new bike Kyla! Congrats!!!

In my last race I learned there are times when you SHOULD throw in the towel. Running the last 3 miles of a half marathon with a sharp, shooting pain every time you land on your foot is a VERY BAD idea. I managed to finish that race, but it blew my season. Was it worth it? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

This weekend I am driving 10 hours each way to go back to Kalispell, MT to see my eldest daughters play and drop off the dog so she can dog sit while we're in MAUI!

Looks very good. I am curious if they swap saddles/pedals/bars/etc... to determine if what you have is optimal for you. For instance if they think your leg extension is good, but you butt wombles, will they swap saddles to see if the saddle width is the issue and perhaps a thinner saddle will eliminate the problem.

I look forward to hearing about the process. Oh yeah, I like that they do a flexibility test first.

Very Purty bikes.  I just ordered a new toy for mine and I'll post photos once it arrives.

What I learned from my last race.........2 things really that go hand in hand.  Like Roni said, knowing when to throw in the towel,  I did at mile 16 of the marathon run in the ironman.  IT SUCKED!!!   But if I hadn't I'd probably still not be cleared to run today.  (see my signature for post race inspiration)  Second, (and related to above injury)  the short base building runs are just as/ if not more important than the long distance runs.  I trained for the marathon under a crazy schedule and often skipped the shorter runs during the week and only hit the long runs on the weekend.  NOT SMART.  Now that I am rebuilding my base I'm seeing great improvement by actually doing my short runs.  It is hard mentally to believe that a 2mile run is doing anything, but last night's run demonstrated it is.  Baby steps are important.

No race this weekend.  I will be decide which training plan to start to prep for my first Oly in September.  I know that is a long time out but 40k bike and 10k run is way beyond any distances I have done to date....so I need to ramp up on volume.

Lesson learned last weekend which was discussed quite a bit this week was impact of cadence, gearing and thinking ahead to the run while biking so the legs are ready to go.  I will add that planning for transitions does make a difference.

i've been tapering for a few months now.  its the hughes system of training.

not nervous about LS but definitely thinking about it a bit.

the one thing, easy.  ya'll have heard this time and again and it's going to come up 50 times a day for the next two weeks.  but i'm saying it anyways.  you MUST pace that bike right to run.  if that wind is up and you find yourself doing 14 but in your planned zone whether that be HR, wattage, etc... THAT'S OK.. stay there.  same goes downwind.. you find yourself all happy go lucky becasue you're doing 28 mph down to the pass, you still need to be monitoring what your body is doing.

remember its a four loop course with lots of sections where we'll be runnign back and forth next to each other.  the LAST thing all of you racing the long course are gonna wanna see is me going by you with more bands on my wrist than you.

pace. that. bike.

and one more thing.  the weather thread is dumb.  pay no attention to it.  seriously!  focus on what you can control.

Yeah that is big for me.  Repeat the mantra, race the plan, race the plan...

I have a wattage range to ride, if it's 23mph sweet, if it's 14, oh well, but have to stick to that.

No racing for me.  We are leaving Friday night to head down to Kure Beach, NC for a few days.  Bringing the road bike so hope to get a couple of good rides in.  Might bring the wetsuits too so my wife can give her's a try for the first time.

What I learned is that nothing can replace training and preparation.  My last race of 2009 was a half marathon and my first race of 2010 was a half marathon.  What a difference when you actually put in the time it takes to train properly!!

I agree with George.  Nothing takes the place of training...which means early season races aren't ideal for me.

One thing I have really started to learn is that the body can do so much more that the mind thinks it can. On my 10k this weekend, I thought there was NO WAY i could hold my pace the 2nd half on the run. I ended up neg. splitting it.
I am really starting to realize that I am way more capable of physicallt doing things than I think.
For example, in my wildest dreams I never would have thought that i would own John&Sam at Lonestar.
Now, I'm thinking it is pretty much a given. Tony- I'm not even giving him a 2nd thought. I know after the bike, He'll be an hour ahead of me. But his quads will be be blown. So that'll be candy from a baby

So that'll be candy from a baby
.

i can't wait till you get there and realize is 1.2, 56, 13.1 miles, not km.
