fattyfatfat - 2010-09-07 8:44 AM socks.

I bought a pair of the CEP socks, and they are awesome. I have ran in them a few times now.
I can't imagine getting out of the water though with them on. Wouldn't they be soaking wet to put in a bike shoe?
I can see wearing them next year for the full, but I couldn't imagine trying to pull them on for a shorter race. Feels like they take me 5 minutes to put on.

SSMinnow - 2010-09-07 8:55 AM Happy Tuesday People!!!!

For the drunks in the group, try some Pedialyte.....used to use it all the time in highschool and college when I fell into the bottle...Boones Farm, Mad Dog, if works for pretty much anything.

Doing some last minute shopping for this weekend, a little more organizing and then dancing around the house doing the countdown!

Make it a good day!

Ouch - that brings back bad memories.  High School graduation night - 2 bottles of Boones Farm Apple Blossom and I woke up the next morning w/ a toilet seat as a pillow!

tahrens - 2010-09-07 9:07 AM Steve, the guy in the capris and pink top actually has an interesting story.  His wife was racing and didn't make the swim cut off.  Her husband was racing too but was standing at the water's edge waiting for her at the time cut off.  She had at least 12 family/friends there to support her (matching pink shirts, balloons, etc) and it was heartbreaking to see them all around her on the beach afterwards.  But the most inspiring part was she and her husband were standing in front of me to register the next day.  What spirit.     Can't speak to the dork in the tennis shoes........

Have to share a nice biker story.  A girlfiend and I were out riding in the country (corner of Tingen and Friendship for my locals) and there was this adorable little old lady refilling an ice cooler by her mailbox.  She had a sign on it that said something to the effect of Ice and Water for Cyclists.  When we stopped to talk to her she explained how it is always so hot and she feels bad for the cyclists so she put the cooler out for us.  She didn't understand why people were leaving money under the cooler since it is free.   I think I need to bake Ms Betty an apple pie this weekend. Laughing

I have worn compression for every race I've done this season.  For Sprints, I wore the sleeves under my wetsuit and put on my socks as everyone else does.  No issues getting peeled or taking off my wetsuit (other than my normal slow stupid tendencies!).  For HIMs, I wore full socks.  I did not wear them in the swim, but pulled them on in T1 with no issues.  I have the SUGOIS and the only thing to keep straight it they have a left and right foot.  My advice is get your legs soaking wet and test out putting on your brand.  For IM, I am doing the same exact thing I did for HIMs, but MIGHT change into a new pair for the run depending on whether or not it rains and they are soaking wet.  I don't wear them for performance at all.  I wear them because they seem to keep my calves less tight over the long haul.

PS I did not need to read about the lady that missed the swim cut off

Don't even let your mind go there.  That is in no way a concern of yours.  You are going to rock this race.  Besides, with your size to your advantage you can slip right though those tight spaces between the swimmers and no one would notice.  No getting swum over for you. Kiss

Tracy - I'm so glad you asked about compression, and thanks for the awesome story about Ms Betty!

Suzy - You do not need to worry about the swim. Smile And which do you prefer to run in, the sleeves or the socks?

Suzy, as Tracy and Julia have pointed out, don't even let your mind go there!  Btw, do you think we we little enough to just attach ourselves to a big, fast swimmer, kind of like a mollusk???  That would be awesome.

Funny I wanted to mention after Trevor said he met Sister Madonna Buder at IMCAN that she and I were in the same swim wave at Vineman half this summer, 45+ Females all swam together.  I saw her at the start, but she was in her zone so I didn't want to bother her.  She finished her swim about 20 seconds ahead of me.  Along with 95% of the rest of the wave, lol, but still!  When I'm 80, if I could still do this it would be absolutely amazing.

I am tempted to try the compression sleeves on a run now just for fun, although I've never done it because it reminds me so much of my parochial school days.  I wonder if they would help with the occasional calf cramp that I have gotten towards the end of long runs.  I have a pair of SLS sleeves that I like for recovery...they help alot on long drives after races.

What is this Boone Farms stuff?  Back when I was in college, my very first alcoholic beverage was Bartles and James Wine coolers.  Talk about headaches and spins.  Ugh.  Wish I had known the pedialyte trick back then.  Nothing like praying to the porcelain gods.

Tony, thanks for the heads up on the Kinvaras, I had read as much but thought it would be worth a try.  I did a short treadmill trial at my dad's yesterday, and they felt really good.  I currently only get about 250 miles on my shoes anyways, I can't imagine it being that much worse.  They look fast standing still, even my mom was coveting them.

Have a great Tuesday, everyone!

I've never worn socks, but wore sleeves in KY and loved them.  I tried putting them on in T1 - bad move.  Someone on BT suggested putting them on before the swim.  I wish I listened.  My PT, who is an exceptional runner, recommend that since I had them to wear them whenever I could.  They help stabilize the muscle, therefore reduce fatigue.  I originally bought them for recovery, but began wearing them in training and then in my race.  My legs felt noticeably better the day after a long run or hard training day.

Or those little fish that attach themselves to sharks so they can catch the droppings from the shark meals.

Not that our Minnow has to worry about any lake sharks...

Suzy - does the compression help on the bike too?  I have mainly seen them on the run.

Hey Kids....lots of chatter going on about compression, my size AND sharks!!!

Re: Compression, I much prefer the socks and here's why.  The sleeves end right at the bottom of the achilles tendon and they tend to be slightly tighter there and at the top.  When I wear sleeves for longer than a sprint that part of my lower leg hurts.  I also think you need to find the brand you like the best, trial and error.  I have CEPS, Sugois and another sleeve Zensah.  I like SUGOIS the best.

I do wear them for both biking and running.  I actually find my calves get tighter on the bike and then hurt my run.  Now that I wear them, seems they're not so tight and my run is more comfortable.

Twin: As a marketer and a researcher, I do not recommend you change your shoes AND change your compression habit at the same time.  If something starts hurting you won't know what caused the problem.  Change one and then change the other!!!

Fear not people, I am not worried about  missing the cut off or getting kicked by some giant dork taller than John or Andy or even being swam over!!!  I've got my start position and am ready to swim, swim, swim so I can get out, out, out of the water and onto better things!

Thanks Diver Girl!!  Did you see any on your recent trip?

I tried to get my marine biologist brother to tell me what they were called but didn't get a quick response so I resorted to my land based terminology Laughing

You know... once upon a time we thought it was reallllly cool to notice remora and looked for them and loved watching the behavior. Happily (or sadly) that has become "old hat," so I can't honestly say if we saw any!! Chances are we did, as we saw many, many sharks on this trip. You also commonly see them on turtles, which we also saw in abundance. I'll go through the photos and see if we saw any that I neglected to remember!!

Or those little fish that attach themselves to sharks so they can catch the droppings from the shark meals.

Not that our Minnow has to worry about any lake sharks...

Suzy - does the compression help on the bike too?  I have mainly seen them on the run.

Remora.

Thanks Diver Girl!!  Did you see any on your recent trip?

I tried to get my marine biologist brother to tell me what they were called but didn't get a quick response so I resorted to my land based terminology Laughing

A marine Biologist from New York? Any chance you and your brother have the same name and he is a short little baldy guy with glasses?

Yes... I he once tried to save a whale on the beach...he wasn't successful.

Hey, I grew up on an island - Long Island - plenty of water all around.  However, the water is much more fun to learn how to be a marine biologist in Hawaii which is where my brother goes to school.

I'm still disapointed that when I went to Lonestar not one person talked like Yosemite Sam...

GOOD MORNING PEEPS!!

It doesn't feel like Wednesday, but guess what? IT IS! So, I know of at least two people in Wisconsin ready to race this weekend, but what about the rest of you?  Lay it out there!

For those not racing, give those who are your VERY BEST ADVICE on how to handle the day based on this year's experiences!!!  Kind of self serving, but always helpful.

Wow, I would have been right there with you at bib number 6404! I am racing the White Lake olympic here in NC instead! It is my 3rd olympic and I am hoping for a PR, although it is a tune up for Augusta. I am working on pacing the bike a little slower to save more for my run.
