Champion 10021![]() ![]() , Minnesota | Subject: RE: What REALLY goes on in your head when you see someone walking a tri?I agree with all of the above. In addition, I will share that I saw a woman power walking Run2 at my recent duathlon. She was actually ahead of me, and since I was in the first wave I knew that she had a KILLER bike. I looked at the results later and saw she had a top 10 bike split (field of over 800) and for whatever reason, she had 13-14/min miles on the two runs. I was VERY impressed. |

I met the guy next to me in the transition and I told him it was my first tri he helped lighten the mood. He came up behind me on the run and put his arm around me. He walked with me for a couple of minutes we had a couple of laughs and he ran on. I had no intention of quitting, but this was a very nice jesture that I appreciated. I don't usually like people touching me, but I did not even think twice about it because I know what his intentions were. I will never forget my first tri or this guy. I am sure that this is what the sport is all about. chevy57 |

Veteran 406![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: What REALLY goes on in your head when you see someone walking a tri?Thomas Demerly - 2008-09-29 9:36 PM I feel bad for them because I've been there. Sometimes I get concerned if I should stop and see if they are OK. When I am coming up on someone in a race and see theyy are walking, struggling, I almost always make a point of gently touching them on the shoulder- to offer reassurance or give them some energy. I get concerned that a person may go very deep inside themselves when they are racing, and that something has caused this to be a lonely or difficult place to be. That they are facing some personal demon and doing it alone. I figure if a fellow comes by and just gently pats them on the shoulder then flashes them the thumbs up it may pull them back in to the here-and-now, that we are all in this together. Hopefully it helps. That is amazing. You are amazing. What you write about a person going deep inside themselves to a lonely and difficult place and bringing them out of it. Giving them your energy. It brought tears to my eyes. OK, yeah I'm female. But still...you are an incredible person. The world needs more people like you. I'm going to try to be one of them. Thanks for posting this. |

In any case, I don't think any less of that person. Matt Cazalas |

Another person to beat to the finish line! -Wow, it's so neat that they're out here at least trying. -I am He-Man and will put this person over my shoulders and carry them to the finish. Honestly, none of the above! I'm too focused on myself to notice much about others. I certainly wouldn't be thinking anything negative about you, that's for darn sure! If you need the knee replacement to live your life as you'd like, then go for it. If you are basing the decision in any way on what you *perceive* others will think of you if you walk during a race, you should rethink your decision - that is truly irrelevant. Do what's best for you and your life. |

I'm glad that they are still trying. I came upon a guy walking who was in my 45-49 AG this year and we were 1/2 mi from the finish. I turned around, clapped my hands and said, "C'mon, we're so close! Let's show them what we are made of!" Dude started jogging. (Granted, he probably wasn't injured, sick at his stomach, etc.) |

Master 1404![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: What REALLY goes on in your head when you see someone walking a tri?We just went through this topic and the debate got pretty intense. I took the unpopular opinion and said aside from medical reasons, and general newness to the sport, there is no reason to walk. My opinion came for my observation that a lot of triathletes fail to put enough run training in. Of course, my observations are limited. There are many reasons people walk, and I have done so myself. More than once, but the goal should always be to run, and to train proprely for the run. When I see people walk, I don't think twice about it. If anything, I look at the calf to check out the age, and hope they are in my age group. I created this animated gif for the original thread I was part of. Hope you can see the humor in it. ![]() Edited by atl_runner 2008-09-30 1:06 PM |

Regular 156![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: What REALLY goes on in your head when you see someone walking a tri?I completed my first HIM Sept. 8th this year (The Duke Liver Center Half in Cary NC). I knew going in that my run fitness was not what it should be, but I was anxious to get a half under my belt. My goal was to not walk, even if that meant "shuffling". The run course was very hilly and it was extemely hot. My stragety went out the window after about a mile. It then became walking up the hills and running down. That worked pretty well, although there was some walking down hills. I saw a lot of very fit looking racers walking which made me feel a litttle better. I was ecstatic when I crossed the finish line just the same. Admittedley I think I would have felt it was more of an accomplishment if I had run the entire time, but that just gives me motivation to train harder and be better prepared. |

Subject: RE: What REALLY goes on in your head when you see someone walking a tri?I had to walk in my last Du. A mile and a half to go, the best pace uh vision in front of me and the knee stopped working. A few people asked if I was ok. On a hill going down I had to lean backwards and hobble down. Some young lady wiht a 24 on her legs stopped and offered to help me down. I declened and she asked again, very cool of her. I never got to thank her after the race. I actually did not give a crap if anyone thought I was being lazy. Joe |

You gotta do what you gotta do to get to the finish line. I'm a very slow runner at best. I HATE IT when I am out there doing MY BEST which is damn slow on my best day for most people and I get the pitying "Oh you can do it"s Let me do my thing and don't make me feel worse about being slow. Last race I just gave em all a big ole smile and said "I'm FINE its a great day to be alive" that really shut them up quick |

Pro 4675![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Wisconsin near the Twin Cities metro | Subject: RE: What REALLY goes on in your head when you see someone walking a tri?As someone with huge IM goals, I was forced to walk the last 8 miles of IM WI last year (stomach shutdown), and started walking at mile 7 in this year's race (hamstring probs at first, stomach shutdown forced DNF at mile 17). With a 2:51 marathon PR I can assure everyone that walking at IM WI this year was a very humbling experience for me, but not something to be ashamed of. Like Daremo said, whatever it takes. One thing I can say for sure, is that when Tammy (tripletmom01) and Josh (mutri) stopped and walked with me for a minute or so this year when they saw me walking on the course, it was one of the highlights of my race day experience. Thanks guys! |

Fishers, IN | Subject: RE: What REALLY goes on in your head when you see someone walking a tri?The longer the race the more that is par for the course. I did a HIM this summer and walked on a few occasions and stretched. In fact I even planned on walking up the large hill that we hit twice. My hamstrings were tight and both times I hit the hill they tightened up more. I figured I can walk the hill about as fast as I could run it. I was still very happy with my run time, though I may have hit the bike a little too hard. Whatever gets you through and we all have our moments. |

Veteran 385![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Chaska, MN | Subject: RE: What REALLY goes on in your head when you see someone walking a tri?In my first tri I had to walk a vast majority of the run (sprint) because my legs were SO cramped!!! Calves and Quads...ran when I could, walked when I had to. The worst part was I WANTED to run...the body said NO WAY.... So I think, as others have said, way to go...keep going...didn't quit...finish it up nicely. |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: What REALLY goes on in your head when you see someone walking a tri?Man, I shouldnt's post, cuz I will probably get bashed, but It's honest.... First I think - "Way to go!!! At least you are out here, giving it a go, working at it, competing. That is SOOOO much better than everyone else who is just sitting at home on a couch with a bag of chips on their lap." but I also think - "I am NOT going to walk - I refuse. I have trained my arse off so I shouldn't have to walk. I want to compete, I want a podium spot, I want/NEED to run..." I have lived up to those words recently in all my shorter events (sprint and oly). But I still walk in my HIM's if I have to (up the steep hills) - and I PLAN to walk through the aid stations on my IM. There is nothing wrong with it, I just don't want to do it...... |
