Anyone who "needs" music to race shouldn't be racing.

There, I said it.

The only thing you "need" to race is clothing and a race bib/number.

Double Wow... LOL. I will tell you this, I have raced enough in my career ( High school and college) to know I have achieved everything I want. After 18 years of battling knots in my gastrocs, I am comfortable with the fact that:

1. I am happy with anything I get. I am shooting for a 40 for a 10K this Halloween ( With my Ipod). Music works for me. My opinion, just as you have yours.
2. After achieving a 31:25 for a 10K (May 1985) and a 15:14 5K (April 1985), I am happy with the supposed comeback of me. If I hit a 35 ( with an Ipod) for a 10K, that is gravy. I have run a 37 for a 10K in April 1997( With a Walkman), so it can be done.
3. I also run on a treadmill 90 percent of the time, especially during the summer) because I have about one hour a day to run.

So there ya go. We all have our opinions. I respect each and every one on here.

Edit: If you would like me to stay on my treadmill and not race you, that is fine too. One more. I would be happy if I could not race again and did 10 miles on a treadmill at a 6:00 pace. I am at a point in my life with running, career ( working on a dissertation) and marriage that running is a major part of my life, not the only thing. By the way, I run 45-50 miles per week.

I'm not sure but the rule could of also stared because they feel as though you would be able to set your pace to a song or any beat that you put into your listening device.  With that said it would then be almost the same as having someone be a pace runner for you and run along side at different points in the race. ( I think there is a rule about that)   The music / beat could be made to make you run faster in parts then others.  You wouldn't necessarily be working with the pace that you set in your mind.  I ran cross country one semester in college and for some of the big races watches, and ipods where not allowed.

The other thing is who is to say that the ipod is an ipod and hasn't been taken apart and turned into radio / walkie-talkie.   you never know

True. Again, I chose to run with one. You dont have to race with me. You can avoid me. I can not race at all. We all make choices. I can chose to stay on my treadmill for eternity. You can chose not run road races.

Dozier - 2009-10-08 9:20 AM I agree with DJS, what advantage is gained by an ipod??  some complain that it is annoying to other runners to hear it ... if thats the case, lets DQ every heavy breather and heavy striker that annoys me.

I would say there IS an advantage...

Much of racing is the mental game...  Can't argue that.  I hear it from the commentators in bike racing during time trials.  If you catch up to your 1 minute man, it give you a boost.  In running, getting out of someone's visual range, sometimes can break them...  There are TONS of mental aspects to racing.

If playing some music that gets one fired up for whatever reason and they can run faster because of it, then it's an advantage.  If it can assist in cadence or pace, then it's an advantage.

I should rephrase ... What advantage is there that is not available to others.  If someone has a coach, they have an advantage that I don't.  However, the advanatage is available to me but I choose to not pay for a coach.  Music is an advantage to some (it actually slows me down), but is it unfair if it is an advantage available to everyone??

No real advantage one way or the other. IIRC, the reason for it is a safety issue, not a PED issue.

To each their own.  I don't have a problem with someone wanting to wear some kind of musical thingy, but once I volunteered at a local 5k/10k.  The two races started together, and my job was to stand at the point where the 5k and 10k split apart and direct the runners along the proper course.  The number of people wearing music devices that had to stop and ask my which to go was pretty eye-opening for me.  I thought I was yelling directions pretty loudly.

So if you're going to wear a music device during a race, at least know the course.

I am unclear what your results in 1985 or your current run mileage has anything to do with whether or not it's appropriate or not to where an iPod during a race. I believe the question asked was can you run a 40min 10K without an iPod? Of course you can, and if the race rules prohibit them, I'm sure you will have enough good sense to not wear one. I train with an iPod, but would never race with one. Maybe they should allow iPods in a race and let's also make sure everyone gets an award.

Yes. Agree with you. That is why I would run races where they would allow them.

Because I am at a point where I might like to race, but it does not consume me. I am at a point in my life that if I choose to race, I will. If I dont, I wont. That is why I brought up the 1985 numbers. I have accomplished everything I want in running. This is my second go around for my career. At this junction, I am in it for health reasons first, winning second. The mileage is there to prove the point that I am more than a 20 mile a week runner.

DJS - 2009-10-08 9:26 AM Still no answer as to why "some" can wear it and "some" can't. I am hearing safety as being the number one issue(outside of everyone's "because it is a rule"). Ok, then, once again, why not make it a RULE and not something that applies to only certain people. That lacks credibility as a safety rule then and is not a legitimate reason, or no one would be allowed to wear them.

Like I have already stated, just trying to understand the logic here. Not trying to tell anyone that you "need" one to race, or "so what, it is a rule" sort of thing.

This is just my opinion, but I think one of the reasons initially for the iPod being banned across the board was due in part to safety reasons. I think it's been modified because so many such as yourself objected to it and the rule for the elites has to be adhered to for the pro's. They are giving the race directors the option to allow non elites to run with them so the RD's don't have to listen to all the whining that they were putting up with and more people will probably participate if they can use them.
