Veteran 549 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread The weather that time of year is unpredictable but prepare for some wind, typically 8-15mph. Water temp is in the 60's so def wetsuit required. Temps will start out around mid 40's to low 50's and peak around high 60's to mid 70's. Bike course is totally flat but run course has couple small hills. Overall a very fast course as you swim point to point with fast current. Sold out last year in late Sep. so you have time to plan and train before committing. Its a great race and very well run. |

Extreme Veteran 371 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Respectfully disagree. Eagleman/Chesapeakeman are "totally flat" bike courses; B2B is not. There are some false flats, and rollers, particularly on the back side of the course. There's also a climb over the bridge going into what used to be T2/finish area. My concern is that with the change of T2/finish to the Convention Center, we may have to bike over the long grated bridge that we previously ran. That might be kind of rough at the end of 112. But I'm sure Setup will figure something out. Adgradiology, the change doesn't make a difference if you were planning on staying at the beach; still have to schlep back at the end of the event Edited by TriBee 2012-02-16 7:44 AM |

Master 2490 Atlanta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread alltom1 - 2012-02-16 9:09 AM I emailed SetUp for some clarification on the new layout and will post if I get a response.. Here's Jeremy the RD's quick reply: "...We have moved the finish and T2 into downtown to improve the event for everyone. Not positive on how we will get bikes into downtown and exactly where the finish line will be as we are working with DOT and the city to get these exact locations nailed down. We will make the announcement when this is finalized" To restate - no more shuttles to or from the Battleship/T2 and finish will be in downtown. The traffic backup at the left turn off of 421 into the Battleship's parking lot was always kind of a mess, so not surprised a compromise was reached to move things into Downtown across the river. Won't understand how the change makes things better in that respect until the new route is announced, tho... The change does make it more spectator friendly, no doubt about that. |

Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread jessica71980 - 2012-02-15 5:03 PM This might be an insignificant question at this point, but this will be my first time to Wilmington, and my first IM. I want to have the best experience I can. If the Hilton is the host hotel, which view would be better, river or downtown? I wasn't sure if you'd be able to see anything (race wise) from either side. 8 months out, and I'm already excited. You can see a little bit of the run course from the downtown view but nothing worth writing home about. |

44 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread I'm leaning towards the OBX or the Unnamed FS series one. They are both on the same weekend. Should I do my last big training weekened before or after the race? If I do it the weekend after the race that would give me a 2 week taper, is that enough? Also I don't think I can just use this as a "training" race, if I get injured oh well. Of course the closer we get to B2B the more I might change my mind. |

Veteran 549 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread People who did those races last year had an extra couple of weeks to recover and train since B2B was later last year. Just depends on your fitness and if B2B is truly an "A" race for you. If it isnt, then do both if your fitness is there. Most people say it takes two weeks for a really well trained individual to fully recover from HIM. |

Expert 1394 Wilmington, NC | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread adgradiology - 2012-02-15 11:39 PM I started looking over posts last year in prep for a possible go at 2012 B2B. Now it seems that some things have changed. The finish is no longer at the Battleship.? T2 is now at the Wilmington Convention Ctr., does this mean that this is now the new finish? I'm thinking of staying at Blockade Runner to give the family an ocean vacation spot. How would that location play into the new lagistics of the event? From what I understand these changes will make for a potential better family and athlete transport after the event. What does everyone think? Thanks.
Blockade Runner is a great location for Start and T1, as well as for beach access for the family. Some people think it is getting a bit dated and they have not put that much money into sprucing things up. From a family vacation point of view you might look into Shell Island on the North side of Wrightsville. It is not as convenient to the start, but they just did a huge upgrade of the property. |

Expert 1394 Wilmington, NC | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Tdotnew2tri - 2012-02-15 9:17 PM Hey guysI'm thinking of doing this after lake placid. Does it get sold out? How's the water condition? Is it windy in the bike? Hoe about hills on the bike and run? Thanks!
Tough to say at the moment. With T2 and the finish now being downtown (course is still not known) it should eliminate the climb on the bike over the bridge coming into T2. As for the run, the change might/should eliminate the 2 bridges that you did 4 times in the full. These were the big hills on the run course. I am guessing they are going to keep the run about the same and go from downtown to Greenfield lake (just like last year) but instead of doing an out and back they will have you go around all of Greenfield before heading back to downtown. You would then do that once for the HIM and twice for the full. (I have no inside info on this. This is just my personal guess as I live downtown Wilmington) At the end of the day I think the run will end up being easier than in the past. |

79 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Hey fellow racers! Quick question to the vets: I've only used Tri Bike Transport for shipping my bike but I just found out they don't service Beach to Battleship...arrgg!! Shipping via Fed Ex or on the plane costs much more $$$, plus the added costs of a bike box, dismantling, reassembling and tuneup. Plus, I've had bad luck with FedEx and UPS in the past. Does anyone know if there's a company like TBT (bike remains fully assembled, no tuneup needed, etc) that services B2B? Thanks! |

Veteran 218 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread michael21 - 2012-02-13 5:05 PM B2B will also be my first IM. I am in the finishing stages of planning my training out(Fink) but can not find a half IM around the 2 month to go mark. I was wondering what you guys are doing, if you are adding a half IM. Are you doing it sooner or later? I really don't want to do just a longer race type training day in place of the race. For reference I am in Chareston, SC. Any help would be great.
I couldn't find a half either, so I'm going back to my favorite Oly --- Lake Logan Tri --- on 8-4. Plan to race it hard. My training always feels better a week after that race, so it should be a plus. |

It's been a while since I've had to ship a bike but I've never heard of another company that does what TBT does...One of the two LBS's in Wilmington is TwoWheelerDealer - They've helped a lot of folks get their bikes to B2B and it might be worth giving them a shout. T2 and finish were going to moved so as to avoid the water taxi needs and aid with better traffic management. Perhaps someone that lives in or around the area can help us better. |

It seems to be working so far......of course the race is still a ways off. I did IMKY in 2010 with the BT plan and it worked fine.
On a different note, who here is planning on wearing a sleeveless wet suit vs. a sleeved wet suit. I only currently have a sleeveless wet suit and was contemplating getting some sleeves to go with it or do I need to just get a sleeved suit? |

Master 2202 Canton, Michigan | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread You'll be fine in a sleeveless, there's absolutely no reason to buy a suit with sleeves. There were a few guys in jammers in 2009 and as far as I know they lived. Or you can drive up north and swim in Lake Huron with me and the wife in July or to our remote spot on Lake Superior in August while we take care of a Lighthouse and get used to cold water as a normal fact of life |
