Lana, many folks are actually in multiple mentor groups. Your new one is run by some really good folks. I hope you get a lot from them

It looks like my prolonged case of food poisoning which suddenly got worse is either typhoid fever (again?!) or bacterial or amoebic dysentery. Things were gross, but now they are REALLY gross. No wonder I was so frickin' tired. (from the fever alone would cause it)

OMG!! Take good care of you!!

I was out of the office yesterday and apparently missed 3 pages of goings on! EEK!

Hope everyone has a good day today. We're leaving for VT tonight so I'll be off the radar again until Sunday night.

Spain !

Take a map, look at the intersection of the Mediterranean and the French/Spanish border. Draw a circle of 100km radius and anywhere in there.

My father owned a vinyard there and in the 20 years he lived there I went once. Doh!

As much as I love Canada, winter sucks !!

Friday words of wisdom, courtesy of the Dalai Lama, "You can't help someone just by making a wish to do so, you have to take action." I would add in that this is true of our own selves a well. So my hope for everyone is to take action this weekend!

Sure. I'm a vegetarian edging toward vegan.  It's a lifestyle more than a diet.

But a note on carbs, carbohydrates aren't bad.  Stay away from the simple sugars.  That makes sense, right?  Less candy and sweets.  Eat complex carbohydrates found in whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and gain all the disease fighting benefits they bring.

I am more flexitarian leaning towards vegetarian.....I would love the vegetarian/ vegan folks to share some recipes cause I am running into a rut with them.

I was thinking of sharing this on with Ann-Marie the other week. I didn't because it makes 8 servings.  I freeze half.

Cincinnati Chili Sauce Warning, it does include processed meat substitute.  Note:  The chili is served alone, 1 way; ways, over spaghetti; 3 ways, with added beans; 4 ways, with chopped onions; 5 ways with shredded cheese!  And yes, we have used vegan cheese substitute when we had a vegan house guest.

That looks good! I could cut the recipe in half or freeze some.

Judi, if you like Indian food, I recently bought the book healthy Indian vegetarian cooking:easy recipes. I've only made two of the recipes so far, but liked them both.

We keep looking, but so far haven't found the right place (mind you, we've lived in Cleveland a couple times over the years - my wife is also from that area - and it helps to lower the bar for other places as far as weather is concerned.  Great city, but not great weather!).

San Diego is nice, but not for us.  I'd do San Francisco, but you need to be gazillionaire these days to live there.  Just don't know Arizona well, but I have heard it's a long way from salt water (kind of important to me - almost moved to Boulder, but same knock on it).  Mid-Altantic gets swampy-hot (lived in Philly for 6 years) … and on and on.

So, where is the perfect place?  Maybe Nice or somewhere in Australia, but for now - it's wherever I can get outside to ride!

Would love to hear where people would live if there were no constraints on them (San Francisco is up there for me, as is splitting the year between the New England coast and someplace warm and sunny (with great fishing) in the winter (HI, the Med., etc.).  But that's not happening (money, kids and family tether us happily to MA for now).  Where would you live?

Matt

I live in the Raleigh, NC area and we can ride and run outside most of the year without going to extraordinary measures.  We have mountains a few hours to the west -- questionable for a day trip but easy for a weekend trip.  We have the ocean about 2-3 hours (longer if you go to the outerbanks).  The Gulf Stream comes close enough to the NC coast that the water temperature are pretty reasonable.  Unlike the midwest, we are not socked in with clouds all winter.  Lots of blue skies which make things seem better.

People around here are kinda cranky because it's going to be a high of 40 tomorrow.   Normal is 50-51.  Oh, and we might have flurries over the weekend.  Some areas just north of here had flurries early yesterday morning but I have yet to see a flake.

I really want to buy a cabin in the Bryson City area (or maybe over the tenn state line to avoid income taxes if I retired there one day ). I love it there.

(don't worry, I won't post this again but we did have some additions to the Pod in the past week)

INFO FOR NEW MANATEES

If you haven't figured it out, we talk a lot. :-)  Fasten your seatbelts!  Also, we tend to be an inspiring bunch (as in, we use the "inspire" feature of the site a lot).  If you are not familiar with inspires, note that you can reply to them by clicking Reply.  This pops out a new window for you to type your response so that the original poster can see it.

Finally, please use training log on the site (Yanti said that it's required: "Keeping up your training log here on BT and opening it to other group members is mandatory.").  This makes it a lot easier for us to help each other when training questions come up.   Here's a few shorts article on training logs:  http://running.competitor.com/2013/12/training/why-you-should-keep-... http://www.active.com/triathlon/articles/10-reasons-to-keep-a-train...

For those who have a running watch or bike computer (think Garmin) and you want to upload that data to BT, see http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=... />
If you list your upcoming races on your training log  -- by adding to My Races or listing them in Dashboard, we'll celebrate with you!

We have a Google+ community that we use on an irregular basis.  Send your info to a returning Manatee (Janyne, Chris, Monica or Darren) and you will be added.

We have a Bike Gallery as well.  Post a picture of your racing steed and draw Chris' attention to it.  He'll get you added.

In the past, someone in the Pod (Yanti, Chris, Janyne) has created a table listing all of the pod members with links to their logs.  Once this handy dandy table has been created, feel free to copy/paste it to your own dashboard.

Please be active!  Inactive Manatees make us sad!

Well, Nice is juuuuust outside that circle, but I SUPPOSE I could handle Marseilles…

Chris, FL is great for a good chunk of the year (and I've spent a good amount of time right close to you - still have some snowbird family members that fetched up around Ft. Meyers - the water is too nice there not to spend some time).  Having been there in years past to pick up boats to sail north in July, though, opened my eyes to what real heat and humidity are!

It is fun to think about this.  I love New England, and always will, but winter sucks here, too!  Especially January-March.  Tough to ride.  Some days even tough to run with the snow and ice.  No fishing (salt, at least) until mid-April when the Stripers come back, etc…  But, for 9 months of the year it's terrific here!

It's funny how once my sporting endeavors switched from alpine skiing to tri, predominantly, the snow is a bit less magical and exciting (although we just took the whole family nordic skiing and, thank goodness, the kids actually loved it - so there's hope!).

Just got to make peace with the basement now and again - if even an uneasy one - and get somewhere warm to fish every so often.

Happy Friday all!

Matt

Totally random post (in keeping with Manateehood) but also very relevant to OWS (in keeping with actual manatees) ...

I kind of pooh-poohed the open-water coach & official course I'm doing because it's online ... that was before I realized how comprehensive it is. There's actually a staggering amount of information presented in the modules (online presentations), links (articles and videos), and the textbook (which I owned and have read, but still). I was wondering why Shelley Taylor-Smith (probably the greatest OWSer of all time, tied with Lynne Cox maybe) gave it such a rousing endorsement and now I know why.

ANYHOW, because I'm finding myself laid up, I have "time" to do a lot of back-burner stuff (so why am I TEN race reports behind?!) ... and frankly, the virtual narrator for the online course is still one of the creepiest things I've ever seen. Gives me the heebie-jeebies each time. I turn the sound off, but her awful face is still there.

In your current condition, I suppose streak could have an alternate (and not so pleasant) meaning.    Truly hope you (and all the sickies on the DL) get well soon.

For the record, I am a big fan of streaking (the good kind(s), that is).

I've been busy with the first week of a new semester and nursing a sore knee so I haven't trained in the the past 10 days.  I started back training this morning with 30 minutes on the trainer followed by 15 minutes on the tread mill.  The knee feels good.      I need to concentrate on biking and running for the next three months or so.   I planned to do at least thirty minutes every day on the bike and run two miles on the tread mill.  I still have a strong base from the training I did over the late fall.  When my schedule and the weather will  corporate I will get outside and train.

It doesn't sound like much but I'm going to be mindful of my knee.     I'm not going to worry about swimming at all.  I will  keep the upper body in shape with a pair  of 15lb dumbbells.  It is amazing what 10 minutes a day with these small weights and just doing one set each of five different exercises sculpts the arms, shoulders, lats, pecs and upper abdomen muscles.    Lower abdomen muscles are taken care of by using a wheel and axle.

Right now that gives me the most bang for the bucks, as they say.        It's good to be versed in optimization theory.
