Back from Austin.  I got a lot of catching up to do, but first I just want to sleep...

Hope you all had a great weekend.

Drive by question(s):  Do you fit your cycling shoes a little tighter?  Mine feel a little loose, which can't be good.  Also, your running shoes.  Are they a 1/2 size larger?  My local running store told me to get them a 1/2 size larger because your feet expand some.  I haven't had any problems doing that, just curious what you all do.

Lastly, any thoughts on Zoot shoes for training and racing?  Thinking about ditching the Brooks.  I wear a neutral shoe, ie no pronation support, etc.

I do prefer my cycling shoes tight.  My cycling shoes are generally 1 size (US conversion) smaller than my normal shoe, and my running shoes are typically .5 size bigger to give me more room in the toes.

I've used one pair of Zoot shoes...just for racing though.  I use more cushioned training shoes for all my training runs.  I'm using a pair of K-Swiss Blade Light Race shoes this year.  I also use neutral shoes.

I definitely have my cycling shoes pretty tight. Loose is not good. Ask Bryan about the Zoot shoes as he is a sponsored athlete and can answer that one best.

Ditto.  I assume tighter means better power transfer

Yup - my cycling shoes fit like a glove. My running shoes have a bit of wiggle room.

x2 on the ask Bryan. He'll also give you a discount code.

Solid weekend of training down here, and picture-perfect weather for the most part.

Saturday was a bit breezy, but not too much of a hinderance on the 8-miler. Had a good overall time for a long run for me. Very pleased.

Amazing 50-mile ride on Sunday. Little wind and lots of sun. Also found a 10-mile addition to the regular route we ride...and it was so serene. Beautiful countryside, lots of creeks to cross, and a nice "climb" over a river bridge...with the nuclear plant reactors off in the distance. Smile

No real plan or structure to the training right now, which is probably a good thing, because work and life have been quite hectic and intense since the HIM.

Wanted to get some exercise in yesterday post race but not go too hard or serious.  Decided to take the mountain bike out for a spin.  I definitely do not get on this often enough, and I don't like the technical stuff.  But the trails are nice.   Couple pics from the ride, all within a few minutes of the house.  Got in nearly two hours.   Need to do this more often

Great pics Chris!!!  That is aweome!!!  Gotta love southern Cali!!

ugh, my weight is totally going in the wrong direction.  I need to get control of myself.  I am clearly addicted to chocolate.   Of course that is no surprise.  But I need to find either some self control and/or better snacks. I have even caught myself eating when not hungry and there is just no excuse for that.  I imagine the stress of moving and the lack of sleep is not assisting with things either.  I just need to focus.  I think I might need to cut sugar out of my diet (other then those already naturally found in foods, specially fruit).

Had a good 8 mile run this morning.  Did a 10K pacing workout to get ready for a 10K race in 3 weeks.  Hoping to squeak under 39:00.  I think I should be able too.

Planning on a swim at lunch.  It has been way too long.

Thomas:  Hope everything goes well with the recovery.

Rudy, Chris & Stavros:  Nice job racing last weekend.

There has been quite a bit of discussion about injuries over the last couple months.  I am interested in thoughts on why injuries occur.  Are some folks just more injury prone then others?  I am starting to think most (not all) are a mix of two symptoms - weight issues and too much too soon (intensity or volume) and most all seem to be running related.  Would love to hear thoughts.

Have a good day.

My bike shoes are sized just a tad smaller than most of my street shoes, but still have enough room for a thin pair of socks for those extra cold days when booties just are not enough. They have enough adjustability so that I can loosen them a bit on hot days/long rides and my feet swell. Current running shoes are sized the same as most of my other shoes, but that ha not always been the case - in some brands I needed to size up a half size, but never down. I race Sprints and Olympics in Zoot Ultra Speeds - love them. For training, HIM & IM I wear Nike Frees customized through the ID program: 3.0 uppers (for larger toebox) with 5.0 midsole (for a little more cush). Here is a little shoe porn:

Nike Free

While I do love them, I have not found the frees to be particularly friendly for sockless running - since I do love my ultra speeds I have been thinking about trying out Zoot's Ultra Race or TT's if anyone has good feedback on either. I am a very neutral, midfoot runner that does not like a shoe that attempts to fix ANYTHING about my foot strike.

So, in the span of under a week, I launched my coaching website (http://pwtcoaching.com), wrote up athlete assessment forms, set up a training peaks account, picked up a free client, and picked up a paying client (referred to me by free client).

Holy cow.

Very nice!

My tri shoes are too loose, which is why I don't where them as much as my road shoes, I prefer the snug feeling.

I have never tried the Zoot shoes, I use the K Swiss Kwicky Blade Lites for 10K or less, need the support of the Saucony Omni 10's for the longer races.

Fred D - 2012-04-24 12:52 PM Hey all, off for a swim I think. Hope your day is going well.

You'll have to swim some for me Fred!

Had a follow up with the ortho on the shoulder, sending for an MRI as it isn't healing as he expected it to.

Just got back from the pool and I have declared my swim fitness "Pathetic".  10 days without a good swim and I was just flat and slow.  Swimming has officially moved up the priority list to the top spot.  Must get better.
