thanks for the updates, I had a PM from Kingsley late last night much the same report.  I have a friend who raced so if he will I'll get him to go check on her.

Poor Yanti - but so typical to carry on riding when she's knocked herself out.  Can't wait to hear from her.

I'm up at 6am Sunday morning going for a ride.  Nervous as usual.

Yanti crashed 3 times on descents in the closing stages of the ride in the wet and very windy conditions. Her special needs bag that was supposed to be at the half way mark was at 140Km so she suffered from severe dehydration, lack of food and hypothermia. The regular aid stations also ran out of supplies.

She knocked herself out in two of the crashes but kept going when she came too. She has a concussion and apparently had a seizure on the way to hospital but checked herself out after being warmed up and rehydrated (she isn't thinking straight at all). I convinced her to go back under observation and she's on her way now in a taxi.

She'll contact me when she gets there. As I learn more I'll let people know.

Oh crud.  Words escape me.  Yanti dear, please take care!!!

Yanti posted 4 hours ago - no more riding for 6months cannot risk another concussion.

She wishes she had done Metaman Bintan - my friend did it and I'm hoping to do the half next year there so me and Yanti could go together!

I have asked a friend to look in on her if he can.  Travelling alone sucks when sh*t like this happens.

Gracious, it's always an adventure with our Yanti.

Sounds like a good idea. I'm ~3.5 hrs straight north of her and was sweating like crazy on my long ride and it's ~15* cooler than she's seeing and completely overcast here. I had a lot of trouble holding onto any grip surface or keeping my elbows on the pads. Could squeeze water out of them, crazy.

Chris - how did your sprint go today? I hope that the heat wasn't an I issue for you too.

Judi and TJ - good luck with your runs tomorrow. I hope the weather is kind for your HM Judi and Enjoy your last run for the season with your son TJ.

Four hours on the trainer this morning.  Non the worse for wear except for my nether region.     Need to remember to use some kind of lubricant for these longer forays in the saddle.

My century is this coming Saturday and I'm feeling pretty confident.   The weather forecast is Goldie Locks.

Time to soak in a nice ice bath.

Very poor performance from me today.  If you look at it as a race I sucked big time.    If you look at is as a free event, well supported training day and a way to think on my feet when it went sour then I rocked. Choose your perspective.

x2! Even if you look at it as a race, if you were able to think on your feet when things went sour, and dealt with the heat and humidity appropriately, then it's a win!  Not every race will go according to plan, but they all help you plan your next race! I say good job.  Laughing

It was not a part of your plan so it was at most a C race/training day.  You rocked it!

BTW, what did you think of the event?  As I mentioned to you earlier, I have generally liked Virginia Beach as an event destination (never vacationed there but have done several events there).  RnR Virginia Beach has been on my radar for a while so I'm curious what you thought of it.

RnR is very well organized.  The expo was great.  Course was pretty good I would say overall I give it  B for course.  Lots of areas that were kind of desolate and lacked crowds/ music.  Not as many bands as I though would be there--definitely should have worn my ear buds and played some tunes.
Excellent marks for volunteers and well placed/ well organized medical crews.  Probably an EMS crew close to every 2 miles in constant contact with the bike support and others.  LOVE the trip through the military base cause some of the active duty guys came out to man a gu and water stop and others were on a golf cart with the back up to the main group.

Locals hand out popsicles around mile 9 or 10 and again at the finish line  Hosed down ...bowl of grapes from a lady on the course....yeah, well supported in many ways.

I would do it again--only if I stayed in town and didn't have to get up at 3:45 AM to get to the shuttles on time.

Hi Manatees!

My heart is breaking for Yanti - I wish we could all be there for her to give her hugs, love, and tie her down if needed to make sure she doesn't try to do anything Yanti-like.

As for my race - I had a great time on the swim, even if my sighting was shyte and I ended up swimming an extra 150m or so.  The bike was fun and I was pretty pleased with my 3:03:xx ride, including 4 stops for stupid mechanical stuff.  But with an hour or so left on the bike it was so hot that my water bottles were warping from the heat which was causing them to droop and rub on my back wheel.  By the time I got onto the run course it was over 100F and it was hot enough that shoe prints were being left in the tar in the pavement.  There was NO shade on the run, and it was on a country road in between 2 corn fields so there was also no wind.  It was like being trapped in a oven being slowly baked alive.

I think I made the smart choice and pulled the plug after the first loop of the run.  Could I have slogged through the second loop?  Yep.  Would it have been the smart choice?  No faching way.  There was no medical out there, people were weaving all over the place, there was a 30% DNF rate, and it was odd (and kind of eerie) to see almost EVERYONE walking.  All in all I'm really pleased with how the day went, and I'm happy that I stopped when I did.  This wasn't my 'A' race, and I'm fine with using this as just a long training day.  Goal #1 (no deathiness) held true and I'm good with that!

The ironic thing of this is that if I HAD slogged through I most likely would have won my AG.  About 10 minutes up on the closest woman from the swim and 3 minutes up on the closest person on the bike.  Oh well, maybe next year...  IF they move the day of the race!!

This was TOTALLY a weather SUCK weekend!!

Between Yanti, Judi, and Monica WTH! Glad everyone made it out alive - although some more bruised than others BIG PROPS for EFFORTS!

I had a family thing in Maine and got home mid day today but I managed to keep up with the goings on here. I just can't believe it - YIKES.

I ran 2 on the TM and I'm walking around on eggshells hoping my back doesn't revolt later.

what to do tomorrow.....hmmmm.....what to do?

Sounds like you made the right call.  Hard to race in those conditions>   I had an Oly several years ago in similar circumstances and I walked most of the 10K run because it was BRUTAL over 100 degrees out there.  We do this for fun, managing in the circumstances has to be a priority so we can all go home and hug our families at the end of the day.

Glad to hear that there was no DEATHINESS that is always a bonus.

I think that you made a good call on pulling the plug. Far more sensible than ended up with hyperthermia.
