As for my race - I had a great time on the swim, even if my sighting was shyte and I ended up swimming an extra 150m or so.  The bike was fun and I was pretty pleased with my 3:03:xx ride, including 4 stops for stupid mechanical stuff.  But with an hour or so left on the bike it was so hot that my water bottles were warping from the heat which was causing them to droop and rub on my back wheel.  By the time I got onto the run course it was over 100F and it was hot enough that shoe prints were being left in the tar in the pavement.  There was NO shade on the run, and it was on a country road in between 2 corn fields so there was also no wind.  It was like being trapped in a oven being slowly baked alive.

I think I made the smart choice and pulled the plug after the first loop of the run.  Could I have slogged through the second loop?  Yep.  Would it have been the smart choice?  No faching way.  There was no medical out there, people were weaving all over the place, there was a 30% DNF rate, and it was odd (and kind of eerie) to see almost EVERYONE walking.  All in all I'm really pleased with how the day went, and I'm happy that I stopped when I did.  This wasn't my 'A' race, and I'm fine with using this as just a long training day.  Goal #1 (no deathiness) held true and I'm good with that!

The ironic thing of this is that if I HAD slogged through I most likely would have won my AG.  About 10 minutes up on the closest woman from the swim and 3 minutes up on the closest person on the bike.  Oh well, maybe next year...  IF they move the day of the race!!

I think a good rule is: if your water bottles start to droop and you running shoes begin to melt, stop racing! If you don't, hitting goal #1 ( no deathiness) may not be possible.

Ugh. What a weekend for manatee racing! The crazy (to me, anyway) thing is that I am hearing about all this nasty weather at your races, and what do I get here? FABOO weather! like high eighties and clear---even the monster wild fire near Yosemite (22,000 sq. miles burned--only 40% containment as of tonight!) is blowing smoke around Sacramento valley, not through it...So of course, I had no race this weekend...just MOUNTAINS of work stuff that I can't keep up with.

I am sending recovery thoughts for all of you who faced challenges this weekend! I think we ALL deserve a vacation! Ooooh, how 'bout a Manatee cruise....wouldn't that be awesome? Smile  Ah one can dream, I suppose.

Judi, nice run in the face of tough weather. Good decision making, so I choose selection B.

Saturday's race was not my best, and was not even very good, worse than last year. I had to work until midnight under some stressful stuff at work, so going into it I was not in a good spot mentally. But it was what it was and I am OK with that.  Thanks for the inspires and kind words.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable day!

Hi Manatees,
Where do I send the Pop Tarts?? I would love to join this group, as I am going to spend the winter getting ready for next seaso

NAME: Nancy Lee Dunn

STORY: I am a a 51 year old teacher, mother of 3, wife and dog rescuer. Actually, I used to be a dog rescuer. I really have cut down on it. I have run off and on for 20 years, I used to smoke and run, then I quit smoking and quit running and gainer 40 lbs. In 2007, I started swimming because I destroyed my ACL in a ski accident (never had it fixed) and then biked and ran, so, VOILA!! Triathlons!! I did 3 or 4 tris, and the last one, the Lake George Olympic distance, kicked my butt and really flared my plantar fasciatis, so I stopped training. Quit any alcohol three years ago, lost 20 of the pounds, and started running again in May. Typical crazy ADD athlete, I signed up for Fred's Team for the NYC marathon, but after an 8 mile race, my PF was so bad, I couldn't run all week. I really scaled my running back, dropped out of the marathon, and now want to get fit again, in a healthy, non-crazy way. And I love triathlons!

FAMILY STATUS: Married, three kids, ages 23, 22 and 19.

CURRENT TRAINING: Was up to four times a week, 3X45 minutes, and long run of 2 hours. After race, scaled way back - running 3X45 minutes, got bike tuned up, starting riding this week.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: RAce the Train, North Creek, NY

2013 RACES:Looking at 2014

BODY COMPOSITION: fat, need to lose 20 lbs still

THanks, hope you can fit me! I will send Pop Tarts pronto!!

Hi Nancy Lee!
You send pop tarts to Yanti in Indonesia  Or at least pictures of them here Wink

I invited Nancy to join us...I know the pod always has room for one more.  What she didn't say it that North Creek and Lake George are absolutely some of the prettiest real estate in the state of NY.  I spent many suppers that way and know it well

Hey Nancy Lee - I'm a newbie here too. This pod is totally nuts (but in a good way )

LG Olympic was just this past weekend. I would have LOVED to do it but I had a family obligation. Oh well.

Welcome!

Hi,
Yes, my husband did the swim part. I would have run, but training for the NYC flared my plantar fasciatis up, so I have been taking it easy on the sticks. (legs) are you planning on doing it next year? My favorite part is the swim. When I did it in 2007, I did all of my training in Lake George, and it is the cleanest, most beautiful lake on the east coast. Everyone should do this tri!

Welcome to the pod Nancy :)

Yanti--I hope, hope, hope you're healing well :)

Mon--Super smart.  That weather was in Iowa on Friday, and it was horrific.  The weather is a volatile mistress--when she is good she is so beautiful and kind, but when she is like she has been yesterday she is just a raging beotch not to be messed with.  Really, really good call.

Chris--It's good to see you racing again, even if it's not your best race day.  Getting back in the proverbial saddle;)

Judi--YOU SILLY--you rocked it, duh! It's about making the right decisions on the given day with the info you've got.  Strong work.

Jo--Hellz to the yes on a 100km bike!  That's farther than I have ever gone.

Good day to all of you, apologies to those I've missed in the shout-out.

There is no better place to be than in the Manatee pod.

Welcome!  I'm Aussie Jo orginally from England but now ten years in Melbourne.  Just getting started with our season in a few weeks.  In fact in two weeks i have HIM in Queensland - yikes!

I have a bike phobia so forgive my many posts about achievements on the bike.  it's been a battle.

PF - is a biatch.  I recall someone posting on how they fixed theirs (Left Brain maybe) - basically a slow build of 1min run 1min walk for a week that kind of thing.  Little and often.

So enjoy the ride (swim run) in the pod.  Many kind people here will inspire you (I can't fathom the inspire business!)

Wise decisions are tough.  When I pulled out of IM Melbourne I had so much negativity in my head - and I got a personal message from Macca saying i'd done the right thing - it helps.

so here we are - you did the right thing.

Welcome Nacy.

I'm Stacey, also from Australia, so forgive me that I always seem to be so late to the party. Just so you know we don't all look the same here in the Manatees. Our Avis are in honour of the fearless Yanti who did IM Japan on the weekend. Speaking of which Yanti glad to see you're up and about today, have you made it home yet? And how is Red?

It looks like for some reason (the weather) we all didn't have such great racing weekends here in the pod (except for Jo rockin her bike ride). The weather was crazy here too on Saturday, no rain but massive winds, rivalling what they were like for Busso last year, Yanti. If the wind was anything like that in Japan, you rocked making it to the end of the bike, without even considering the rain and the crashing

Tough racing this weekend, Pod. I have been praying for peace and any needed healing (Yanti) for everyone this weekend. Tough decisions all around.
