I am finding I can't sleep past 4:00/4:30 even on days when training doesn't require I get up so early.  And of course, as soon as my eyes open, I MUST EAT!

I just want to say good luck to all racing!!!  You are almost there.......I will be catching at the finish line from 8-1145, so if you plan on finishing around then I hope to see you!!  Remember to enjoy the day as much as you can and have a plan for when the "down" moments hit.  It really does help to know what you are going to do to make you push at the end and finish.....

Hey, you rock my friend!  You will probably be there when I stumble in.

Yes, I eat and sleep when I'm not forced to work or working out.  But I am not horribly sore and I seem to be recoverying very fast.  I keep wondering, am I doing enough??

Insomnia?... just the opposite here, which has it's own challenges. After a long day @ work then whatever I-MOO training needs to be done, my wife actually would like to talk before bed time. That lasts all of 60 seconds before I'm ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. And when you're sleeping.....that's ALL your doing in bed. If you get my drift. TMI

I've been struggling with sleeping lately too.  I heard that when it's near a full moon, people don't sleep very well.  Not sure if it's true or not but there is a full moon tomorrow night.  Good luck with your weekend of training.  I'm starting tomorrow with a 100+ mile ride!

HawkeyeNation - 2011-08-11 12:52 PM As we all approach the much need taper period, my question for everyone is this. This being my 2nd ironman( 2010 IMmoo) how does everyone approach taper? Last year I used a 3 week taper bringing down my volume each week but I think my I intensities stayed pretty high, do you also bring down your training intensities along with your volume or a mixture of both, just curious what everyone says, taper for all races have been hard for me, probably more mental than physical, always think I should be doing more! Hope everyone is staying healthy and strong as possible right now!

I'm self coached so I had to work out the taper thingy myself.  I went back and forth between 2 or 3 week taper and read every little thing I could get my hands on.  I finally realized that they really aren't that different.

With a three week taper the generic way is to base it off your peak weekly volume and go 75%, 50%, and 25% the last week.  If your peak was 20 hours you would do 15, 10, and 5 hours.  That 15 hour week isn't much of a taper!  lol.

This method is a good starting point and you can adjust it in subsequent races.  Since you did a three week taper in 2010 you can look back and adjust.

Also, I keep the intensity during the taper the same as the intensity during the rest of my IM training.  low.

FYI - for anyone coming to Madison next weekend (Aug 20th) for the OWS John Nolen Drive will be closed for car traffic that weekend. Here is the link to the information and a map. I know that they will have detours set up so you can get to Monona Terrace for the swim.

Hope everyone's long weekend training went well.  I took a nasty spill on the bike yesterday I was fortunate to walk away from relatively unscathed.  Just a big bruise on the hip and some other cuts and bruises, but thank god for helmets.  I hit my head on the ground hard enough that my sunglasses landed about 15 feet away!  Luckily no concussion though.  I will definitely be replacing the helmet, and my rear derailleur hanger was bent a little, but other than that could have been much much worse.  Be careful out there!

Thanks for the update on the construction. Looks like I should be able to get to the Sheraton before the road is closed. My plan would be to ride my bike from the Sheraton to the start of the swim on the 20th. Ride back to the hotel and get changed for a ride of the bike course. So who else is in for a swim and a ride on the 20th?

I'm swimming the Mad 2.4 swim this Saturday and then planning on riding the stick and one loop.  Are any other folks planning on doing similar?  I've never ridding the stick and looking for someone who knows the route.

Thanks mike.

And there is pea gravel right off Witte, be careful its a quick steep decent with a quick steep climb right after. I took a small spill shifting gears when my rear tire lost traction on the gravel.

Awesome!!  I still have not decided where I am staying Sat night....I'm thinking I may just go to the campgrounds unless I get a last minute deal on hotwire.

Procrastinators unite.

I haven't gotten a hotel yet either.  I figure I'll end up way outside of town and have to drive in at this rate

We just booked a room for the MOWS for Friday and Saturday night @ the Days Inn by the Alliant Energy Center. Someplace over there. Not too far out of town... in Madison, in fact. We're driving up Friday after work and staying Friday night and Saturday night. (Saturday, if you're riding the whole course and doing the MOWS) is a LONG day. Last time I drove home. This year we're staying.

I'm exhausted. This is my last biggish week. I did my last long run (or LONGEST run, I should say) last Thursday. This Thursday will be 13 miles, and the week will be capped off with MOWS + Ridethecourse. I struggle with running and it has the most potential to beat me up, injure me, and or sideline me, so I play it very conservatively.

That being said, even though I feel EXHAUSTED when I'm not training, I've had some pretty good workouts even in my exhausted state. My body surprises me and is stronger than I think it is. Kiss

I've been sleeping, but I wake up in the middle of the night with aches and pains. I roll around a lot trying to find a comfortable position in which to sleep. My periods of awakeness don't last, though, because I'm so damn tired.

I'll see lots of you fools this weekend! CAN'T WAIT! I signed up to swim MOWS sans wetsuit. I can swim it either/or but I don't want race day to be the first time I'm swimming the distance in a lake without a wetsuit, in the unlikely event the swim is not wetsuit legal. So, without wetsuit it is!

Lake is down to 76 now.  I think you will be okay!    I am doing it with wetsuit on Saturday.  I've only swam in my sleeveless 2x and I have to work out some chafing issues.  I am also riding the full course afterwards.  Might try to run a little bit after the ride too -- If I am crazy enough at that point.

I hear you about being so tired.  Sounds like my training plan is very close to yours, I also have a 13 miler this Thursday and then MOWS, ride the full course and a short run afterwards on Saturday.

For all of you riding the full course Saturday, how are you handling nutrition?  Maybe you've all been training with carrying all nutrition for your full ride on the bike, but I've usually stopped halfway to refill nutrion (and of course, stopping to refill water bottles every hour or two).  If I was driving to Verona and just doing the loops, I wouldn't worry about nutrition restocking.  But since I'm doing the "stick" too, I'm trying to figure out the logistics of this refill.  I'm debating having my wife drive out to Verona at XX time to meet me with refills.

Anyone else have grand plans for this?

Steve

Anybody going to be down Friday night 8-19 looking to meet up for dinner and a drink or two before MOWS and biking this weekend? I'm planning on hitting town around 5:00 or so and thinking maybe Great Dane but open to company and suggestions.
