Here's my Oly Race Report from July 14. I did three Olys this summer -- one without a swim, and this one with a shortened bike course. Rats.

Jason, I think there is more to this than you may think.

Okay, so I drank the kool-aid / am coming over to the dark side / bit the bullet / whatever other fun expression you might be able to come up with :P

Found a good deal on a Quarq Elsa and bought it.  Now maybe I should go back and read all the power discussions we've had in the past!

Tri bike is in the shop for pre IM tuneup, so road the roadie on teh trainer this morning.  Wow, felt like a low rider, all kickin' back and sh**, all I needed was some gin n juice!     I am always amazed at how different the geometry feels, and how quickly I'd get used to the road setup if I started riding that.

I'm still trying.  It's been a painful week and a half!  At least I got to swim this morning....no longer feel quite as lazy!

I like to take my time repairing my bikes apparently.  I finally got some rim tape.  I got even further then predicted today by taking the tire off and applying it as well.  I'll save putting a new tube on for another day.  I might even put the tire back on the bike if I get super motivated.  ... and this is why I usually just bring it in

Bagged my run this morning as I'm having some type of issue with the front part of my foot/ankle.  Basically the tendon/ligament that stretches when you point your toes that's between the bottom of your shin to the bottom of your ankle (front part).  Started bothering me at the very end of my run on Saturday, but I thought it was simply because the tounge of my shoe was slipping down.  I pulled it back up and it felt fine the last half mile.  Same thing happened on Tuesday the last mile.  Wednesday it seemed to bother me a bit more despite adjusting the tounge several times.

I'm using a new pair of shoes (for about 2 weeks) but it's the same model shoe as before.  This morning I tried an older pair of shoes and felt it as soon as I put them on so I decided missing one run wouldn't kill me.  Weird though that my work shoes don't bother me, but the area does feel a little tender when I stretch it.

I've got an Oly this weekend...so hoping this is just something minor and will clear up with a day or two of rest.

Well, you're light years ahead of me. I noticed this morning that my hybrid (that I use with the tag a long) has a flat. I just stood there looking at it, thinking, "cr@p," and walked back into the house. I'll save that problem for another day.

I seem to have a growing disparity between swim speed and pull speed. Swim has at least been consistent, but some of the pulls have really been taking off. Last night at masters there was a set of 8 x 100y on 1:30 in the middle of the main set and I came in on 1:15-1:17 for all of them. Really hoping that translates well to wetsuit speed, but also working figuring out why there is such a difference. Some days it's like 6 sec/100. Never had much of any difference until very recently.

We just did a set this morning that was 8x200m alternating swim and pull -- my swim and pull times were literally exactly the same as one another.  It makes sense to me that one would be faster pulling than swimming, so what you're seeing makes logical sense to me.  I still have no idea how I'm so bad at pulling (that said, I've improved quite a lot, which just tells you how bad I used to be!).

I do think those who get a good advantage pulling tend to get a good advantage with the wetsuit, so hopefully it'll work out the same for you.

I swim faster than I pull for everything up to around 500 yards.  For some reason, on 100-200y pull sets, no matter how hard I try I can't pull faster than 1:26ish, but I can hold 1:33ish seemingl forever.

Hi Nicole,

I noticed you commented in TT that you do some low 90s TSS, 1 hour workouts. How do those feel ?

Maybe others can comment, but I suspect your FTP is set a bit low. If I do a 90TSS 1 hour workout, I am toast.

I will be interesting to hear you comments on power with TR vs a real power meter.

Can I ask where you picked up the Elsa ?

I suspect my FTP is (was) a bit low when I was doing those workouts.  I was at the point of needing to retest, but wasn't able to do it before the race and am now taking some time off the bike to see if I can get my knee injury straightened out.

I did feel pretty beat up by the end (would absolutely not have wanted to run after those rides), but was able to recover for workouts 12-24 hours later.  The 90ish TSS workouts were like Sufferfest's Downward Spiral and Hell Hath No Fury, and a couple TrainerRoad VO2 max rides.  Of course, all of my power numbers are based on TrainerRoad, which I suspect will not correlate to actual power....was really just using it as a gauge for progress over time.

Picked up the Elsa from someone on ST who was selling a used (but new in box) one that against keeping because it had compact cranks.

Absolutely! Someone has to stay home and byotch about IMLive not working. In addition to Rusty and James, there are about 6 ppl from my tri-club up there racing this weekend. Another dozen or so volunteering or working the med tent. My fb page has been inundated with photos. What a beautiful venue.

Sounds like a good plan to me!  I think I'm going to try to get an OWS in, but will be free for the rest of the day (not that it'll take them that long to finish....speedy guys!).

Well, James and I will both be watching from the front row seats! Laughing

My bib number is 2485 and my beautiful brides is #918. James is 2703. Any love you guys are able to send our way is much, much appreciated.

We were able to meet up with James and Ms. BrotherTri for dinner and we got a nice little swim in this morning. I will be using a full wetsuit while James has agreed to wear board shorts and also use ankle bands just so it is a fair race between us. He is not sure yet if he will be wearing his Hokas for the swim, but he is thinking about it.

James and Rusty

This is a pic of the back of my bike in transition:

and this is a picture of the back of james' bike:

I am not entirely sure he is taking this race seriously enough....

In all seriousness, thanks for the well wishes, everyone.

The off-season is the best time to fine tune your skills and prepare yourself for the next season. It is also time for you to gain some strength and get a little rest after a long season of training.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
