Hi, Debbie!  Welcome to the Pod.  Good for you for trying a tri again and for going for broke in response to your cancer diagnosis.  Always feel free to ask questions; this group is a great place for answers as well as support.  You'll also notice that we're pretty chatty on non-tri issues.  Jump on in and join the fun!

Hee hee.  Fun name!  Love it when organizers get creative with race names.  I did an adventure race awhile back called the Bearable (at Bear Creek Lake Park) and then recently did the Wild Goose Chase.  We have another race around here called the Undy 5000.  They usually have race shorts instead of a shirt and it's a fundraiser for colo-rectal cancer awareness.

Nice!  We have the Underwear Affair in Vancouver to raise money for "cancers below the belt" and there are some fantastic costumes every year... though the most entertaining is almost always the guys that run in nothing but a jock-strap covering the jumbly bits.

We have a couple of clothing optional runs sort of around here, but other than that our runs are not that exciting!

ha, ha.  I did send a link to one of those exciting races to a couple of friends.  But, no I will not be doing a naked run - it would be too traumatizing for the other runners, even the experienced nudist!

Hi, and welcome, Debbie!

Oh dear.  I had no idea I had been so remiss.  Here are the pups (Shanti on the left, Pippin on the right) and the cat (Cricket):

I have no bike or shoe pictures.  Will post those when I get new ones of both as the ones I have are pathetic.

ETA:  So as not to be speciesist (yes, that's a word), I think other pets should be included.   Besides, Yanti has a whole menagerie to exhibit.

Hi Debbie great to have you on board. One thing that I will say is don't be afraid to ask any question you might have - there are no silly questions. And the Manatees have a bit of their own language sometimes so if you aren't sure what something means then by all means ask - I can't promise that it will make sense though.

So now that all of the other puppies are gone (thank goodness) Dee has been in with our big dogs. She is getting so brave that last night she though her Grandma's bed looked the most comfy (she got moved on fairly quickly)

Met up with a local cycling club for a group ride for the first time. There was an A group and a B group, and I wasn't sure which I would end up riding with. There was also rain in the forecast, but we all thought the weather would hold.

The first 15 miles of the ride were fantastic. It was a great evening, and I was staying near the front. I even made the front pack when the group split (which was caused when some in the front group went off to chase down some guys on TT bikes, haha). By the way, it was interesting to see cycling culture and cyclists perspectives on the triathletes. (I must say that one of the TT guys had an aero helmet on for a training ride, a bit ridiculous).

Anyhow, I saw the rain clouds moving in, and I didn't want to go the whole 40 miles that the A group was going to do, so I stopped to wait for the others. I then turned around and started cycling back. I never met up with the other group!

They must have turned back a bit earlier. So I ended up riding along out in the country not quite sure where I was or what direction I was headed. After a while I saw another cyclist who (she) ended up to be riding along pretty quick. I pulled up next to her and asked her if she was part of the group. She said she wasn't. I told her I was lost. She pointed me in the right direction. The rain started picking up.

Before it really started raining, I rode past the house of some friends, and thought it best to see if I could catch a ride. They were able to, and it spared me a cold shower

The ride was fun! I hope I can do it again sometime.

Not going to try and catch up!

Just back from a weekend in Cairns. Got to chat to Brad Kahlefeldt and my new best friend Belinda Granger. Also a nice chat with Cam Brown and Liz Blatchford.

Was a miserable wet race really not pleasant for competitors or spectators!

Yanti - Jason McNamara did a 10.02 with a flat and a penalty.

Now have post race depression - thats a thing.

The bike gallery has been updated with Debbie's Scott. And welcome Debbie. Your story sounds pretty interesting. I hope that we can help you reach whatever triathlon goals you may have.

Tom, I think you hit on a few points about group riding. There is a dynamic to every group that may be different, but it is important to go in with your eyes wide open and yourself prepared. There are always A and B riders and it is beneficial to learn everyone's tendencies in the group. There will be people you are comfortable behind and others that you are not. There are the "racers" and the "riders".  One thing that is not always present, yet should be, is a good leader. Not necessarily the best rider, but someone that will keep the group together, or at least as organized as possible. Before heading out, the leader should always know as much as possible about each person in the group and make sure everyone understands the route and the group. I hope you do many more, they are a great tool to help you grow. Here are a few views on group rides, for whatever it is worth.

http://www.bikelaw.com/2011/09/01/lost-art-of-the-group-ride/

http://michaelbarry.ca/2011/11/the-group-ride-2/

http://bigshark.com/articles/group-ride-etiquette-pg175.htm

Whenever possible, my Saturday rides are with the LBS group. Ours is a nice ride out of town, down the highway a bit. We turn into a fairly quiet neighborhood and the pace picks up a notch. Halfway through that, we are starting to move quickly, with the group beginning to fracture a bit. We have a "No Drop" policy, and the LBS owner always appoints someone to ride "sweep" and it is usually himself. It is a good group to ride with, each person pretty much looking out for the others in the group. I have another group that is not so organized, much faster and more of a race type group. I rarely ride with them, but when I do, I get in a real good workout.

Ha! I thought you guys were kidding about the gallery!! And nice domane, whoever owns that. That was my second choice bike

Chris, thanks for posting those articles. I am brand new to road biking and I want to join the group rides at my LBS as soon as I am able to do the distance. They seem like a helpful and friendly bunch, but I like to be prepared going in to things.

Speaking of being prepared....I have my first swim lesson tonight. I am a weak swimmer and have no idea how to do a crawl. I found the coach through this forum (woo hoo!) but I have no idea how to determine if she is "good" or what have you. Any tips or suggestions?

I thought about doing a tri but ended up chickening out. Last year I was diagnosed with cancer and since then, I've been determined to get the most out of life. I'm fairly injury prone so I'm working on more of a balance this time around to keep those pesky ailments in check. I did climb to the Mt. Everest Base Camp last fall which was an AMAZING experience. FAMILY STATUS: I live alone with my pit bull mix pup. Been dating my boyfriend for over a year now. CURRENT TRAINING: I just started the beginner sprint tri program. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Sprint tri on 8/23 BODY COMPOSITION: I would love to ditch about 10-15 pounds and get some of my nice muscle back!

I think it may be in the manatee bylaws that anyone with a dog is allowed to join at anytime, so welcome!

How cool (ha, ha) that you were able to do the Everest Base Camp climb!!

I believe it is also written in stone somewhere that a manatee must post pics of said dog/dogs. Seems that rule goes along with the mandatory bike and shoe postings

Besides, Yanti has a whole menagerie to exhibit.

cuties!

I learned in this race that in order to finish the swim, you have to know where you are going. And in order to know where you are going, you have to learn to sight.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
