Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Well, not doing IMAZ since it is already full except for $1400 charity slots. Seriously, I think I will just fly back to Asia and do IM Malaysia in November. I kind of had my heart set on doing that or Taiwan as a first IM anyway, if not Challenge Wanaka, and I have a friend doing it. Wanaka full is out--just too hideous to train through most of an Idaho winter for an IM in February! Mom still wants to go to Australia--possible we might combine racing and pleasure and figure out a way to "park" the bike in Singapore and fly to/from there to Australia after the race after a few days of R and R. Or maybe just work it in at the end of this school year. |

Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Originally posted by Hot Runner Karen you would be welcome to use my bike if you do Western Australia. It's not a tri bike though, just a road bike. I can see if I an find what size it is. I know it is a men's frame that I had narrower bars and a new seat put on. If it is too big Yanti has my old bike which she keeps here in Perth it is smaller so that might be an option. Still a bit up in the air. I want a warm-weather race late in the year. The possibilities are Arizona, Western Australia, and Malaysia. Had been planning to do Malaysia, but that was assuming I'd be living here. Leaning toward AZ if it is still open, as the travel is considerably less ambitious. I would really prefer an ocean swim, though. Mom isn't that into Malaysia, but she does want to make a trip to Australia. Have also considered going for the full at Wanaka, and then on to Australia to travel. Just not sure where/how I would "park" the bike if we wanted to do further travels, or what I'd be up to tourist-wise after a full IM. Then again, Mom will be 80--the race might put us on equal physical footing for the next few weeks! Stacey--Maybe we are the same height? Didn't you have a bike you said you never use?! I will probably hold off for a week or so on IM; going to enter Vietnam and Calgary tomorrow. I had a pretty crappy run today--everything felt really swollen and stiff from the trip and then being back at work on my feet for three days right after. Just want to be feeling a bit better before I make that commitment. I am 167cm which I think is 5'6" or 5'7" or something around that. I have shorter legs and a longer body. The other solution is that I would be happy to store your bike for you while you travelled. Not sure how your school Year works but there is also IM Busselton in May (I think they are still doing that), but it will be much colder and there will be a much greater chance of rain. There is also IM Asia-Pacific in Cairns in June. It would be warm and dry up there then and you could base yourself there and see the barrier reef and some things like that. Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Thanks! Leaning toward IM Malaysia--my coach thinks it would be a better fit and I really like the location. Taiwan would be kind of a PITA--it's on an island with limited transport for people and bikes. Sounds tricky to arrange from afar. I am having enough trouble with putting together spring break and accommodation for IM Vietnam--my bank just decided to cancel my card as it thought all those overseas charges were "fraud".Now it will take $60 of hold on an international line to get back use of my card. Called last night and was told "45-60 minutes wait time to speak to a banker", then my phone card ran out. Grrr.... Not sure about your bike. I'm about 5'7" but lanky--pretty much all arms and legs. Most people think I'm a lot taller than I actually am, for that reason. Probably would not be a good fit. I think for full IM it is better to use my own bike. If I do Challenge Wanaka next year (the HIM) might end up renting a bike to save money and make onward travel more convenient. I think for three hours, I'd be OK on a rental, especially if I could put on my own seat and pedals. 180 km, not so much! Where are you located in Australia (closet major city/airport, and relative to IMWA)? Still not clear exactly where Mom wants to travel and what airport we would be flying into/out of. I think she doesn't have a real concept of how big the country is and how far various things are from each other. Edited by Hot Runner 2018-02-25 5:45 PM |

Member 667 | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED DH booked our flight to Santa Rosa. He went with United because it was cheaper than Southwest. However, the charges for my bike would be $175 each way on United! That's $115 more than our round trip tickets! Last year on SW they charged me going to San Diego but not coming back so it was only $75. So now my question - Do I fly with my bike or use Tribike Transport, which would actually be cheaper. Thoughts? |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED I think you'd be better off with TriBike Transport. Jealous as I've never had that option since I live overseas. Just one less thing to worry about and lug through airports, especially after the race when you're tired. I hate checking the bike--different airlines and countries all seem to have different ideas about things like whether the power meter battery, and some of my tools, are okay, etc. Plus the airlines here are inconsistent about charges--occasionally I've gone through a line and been charged (or not) and a friend on the same flight and same airline is charged differently, or not at all! |

If not, talk to your coach so that he understands that you will be without a bike for your taper. |

They were set up right next to transition and did all the putting back and tweaking of the bike. Made me think if I ever had to fly to a race I'd use them, so I didn't have to worry about my bike. |

I used TriBike for IMChoo. If I ever fly to another race I would use them again, no doubt. It was so easy. Set up the transport, drop the bike off at a shop a couple weeks before the race, pick up the bike at athlete check in. We didn't use TBT for the return trip but I have no doubt that would have been easy to manage as well. |

Member 2098 Simsbury, Connecticut | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED URGH sorry guys - I'm so busy at work I think I missed some of my favorite topics - so real quick: 1. Powermeter - I went with best bang for the buck and got a power2max. then I got one for DH. It's great. The only part I don't like is changing the battery. I have to take the whole crankset off. But luckily it's not that often. I'll do it before ironman's or when the battery starts to show loss of life. What I learned about using a power meter is that my "easy" was too easy. 2. nutrition - I love infinit. So easy. IT's really not a hard concept. Do the math (to start) - based on weight how many calories should you need and how much sodium and start there and adjust up or down based on trials. You have no choice but to do trials and that is a little expensive but once you dial it in - all you need to think about on the bike is "keep drinking." As to UCAN - you have to be metabolically efficient to survive on that little calories and I don't know many people who are. Not to mention it tastes terrible. I'll be back Edited by mtnbikerchk 2018-02-26 2:05 PM |
