Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Originally posted by melbo55 Originally posted by bcraht So many thoughts/stories running through my head about pets and what animals can do and are for us. None of my words can express it. There are those we have, but there is always that ONE THAT HAS US. I sure am grateful to be in a group of people that understands/experiences the depth of it. I still think about/miss/see my Oreo 2+ years later. I like to think that when they are gone from here, they are all together in a beautiful garden, reunited with the doggie/kitty/horsie friends they had in life. In fact, when we said goodbye to Idgie, I told her to go find Oreo. There is no doubt in my mind that such a place exists, Kirsten. I'm certain they are waiting to see us again, someday. Did I ever mention that the spirit of my last dog, Moxy, is still around? Seriously. Especially the first few weeks after we made the impossible decision to put her down. She had cancer, an aggressive type that was in her lymph nodes - she endured multiple surgeries and chemo over the course of about 8 months (well, actually a little longer - her first surgery seemed to get rid of the cancer but it ultimately returned after about a year) but eventually grew weary of the fight. The last week of her sweet, precious life was one of my hardest and making the decision to help take her out of her discomfort was only made easier by the fact that she came down with a bout of pneumonia on top of all her other issues and was truly suffering and worn down. Ever the fighter, she stayed strong to the very end, refusing to lay down for the entire (long) drive to the vet or even on the table. She passed sitting up, we had to gently lay her down when she was gone. Over the next few days/week I would often feel a presence near me. My husband would claim he'd see her. The biggest proof of her spirit remaining happened one night we were watching TV. DH was on the couch, I was in my recliner. Often Moxy would lay at the opposite end of the couch. We distinctly heard a *thump* and the trot-trot-trot of her padding across the living room floor. The floorboards made noise and all. As she passed in front of the fan, we heard the pitch change as it does when someone disturbs the air flow. He looked at me and I at him and I said, "Did you just hear that?" Moxy jumped off the couch and went into the kitchen. There were other instances as well, but that one is by far the most compelling because we BOTH heard the same thing. Eventually I couldn't take the loneliness and 3 weeks later we rescued Coco, then 2 weeks after that got Dobie from DH's parents. The Moxy incidents continued and were also validated by the other dogs, especially Coco. Once in a while we still get a little visitation but not as frequently as before. I love these stories. Even when I was a diehard atheist, I fully believed that the personalities or souls of beings kept on being (I just didn't believe in one central, all-encompassing master being). It's because I saw them, they interacted with me, and I can no more be disabused of their existence than I can the existence of Mutti or Tina or Kingsley or anybody I know as a body. (Not sure about some of you guys, though ) There are times even other people's passed pets have come to my aid. When I was literally freezing to death at IM Melbourne and Japan, my friend Chris's dog Sasha, a huge husky that I called Superpoof, who loved and was at her best in horrible weather--she came to lope alongside my bike and keep me warm. Yeah, so I was loopy then--but considering I wasn't entirely sure of my own complete name at those times, it's odd that I sure knew hers! I feel a tiny bit better about this--I also know mistakes aren't final. Stace Face and I have been batting this back and forth ... when a dependent and thus vulnerable loved one who has placed their entire life, trust, and love unconditionally in your hands dies ... I feel like I failed her. (We both know that's not true, but we are experiencing an utterly true and terribly painful feeling). But IF in any respect I did fail Dana ... it ain't the end, and if there's anyone that's first to forgive, it's a dog. I took a ton of pictures of Dana on her last day. I know this one ain't no Mother Teresa in a cinnamon bun, but the dog's no less a saint for it. It's like her SpiritDobie was preparing to leave her body and letting us know she'd still be around. |

Veteran 2842 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Ok - in no particular order, I'm playing catchup (been a bit crazy trying to close an investment and get a few dozen people their jobs back). Yanti and all the other animal people (who are my kinda peeps), I feel what each and every one of you wrote. They are not just pets, the way a goldfish is (although I get pretty bummed when we even lose a fish), they are family. After we lost our first lab (together) and our 3 cats back in the earlier days the Better Half and I were together, it was so heartbreaking (all within a year) that we couldn't get over the hump again for a long time. About 5-6 years later, our daughter (who's first sentence was, "I want a dog" - honest to pete) convinced us, and we brought another lab into the family. After him, we decided that we didn't want to be without a dog when he passes (the sad hope is that we outlive our pets), so of course we got another pooch at about 4 years. We now have 2 furry family members and are thinking about a third (chocolate, yellow and now black!). We'll see… Oh, and we have a bazillion other critters of various descriptions (the kids love 'em… and by kids, I mean all of us). I feel your pain, but we never forget them and there is some measure of comfort in that... As for the Superbowl, I'm picking the Patriots (hey, next year is the year… again!). I prefer PLAYING rugby (wing forward), but not a lot of it to watch around here... Can I just say that for a tri called the Mooloolaba Traithlon, I just might travel around the world? Truth… I'm going to be saying that all day now - sheesh, I'm easily amused. As far as getting out in this weather (it's warmed up to 0F and only feels like -10F now - so I'll be running in a couple hours), you do what you have to, yeh? If it's not safe (like ankle breaking ice), I'll be on the 'mill. Otherwise, I drink a nice hot glass of HTFU and get out there. Plus, the vitamin D from the one square centimeter of exposed skin is good for me. Right? Lastly, I've been hitting the pool like how I think real triathlon swimmers (as opposed to real REAL swimmers - that's too crazy a bar) do, and I'll be darned if it isn't wiping me out! I LOVE IT! Carry on. Matt |

I think the list starts like this: Seattle Seahawks - Kirsten, Salty, Monica Denver Broncos - TJ, Chris So, who do you like for next Sunday's game? And are you ready for a little trash talking? And speaking of non-tri sports, Janyne, your Canes were on the road last night. Did you see Gerbe's goal? Awesome!!!! Have a great day everyone, the weekend is nearly here!!!! Stay warm, my northern friends, it sure looks brutal up by some of ya'll. I'm still hoping the Dolphins get in But if I have to pick b/w the Seahawks and Broncos, I'll lean toward the Broncos b/c I think Manning's commercials are funny. Oh, and I hate Pete Carroll. Hee hee. I really like him. But that's because I was a curriculum director for a required course at USC (nobody could test out of it) and therefore, like every single other first-year student, all his players had to take it too. The attendance and work requirements were very stringent. And yes, players could be and were benched if they didn't show up and keep up. So the coaching staff--and the tone was really set by him, and meetings with him and the Athletic Director were, gasp, pleasant--had a very vested interest in making sure those guys damn well turned up, tuned in, and turned in work. Also, a good friend of mine was the Special Teams coach at the time. And my office overlooked the practice field. It got loud--especially because the marching band and color guard would sometimes rehearse on the field as well--but it was really fun watching. Despite that I had free passes to every single game, even sellouts like vs. UCLA ... I never went to one football game. I didn't even sell the tickets. What an idiot!

I have both, Run on my iPhone and Bike on my HTC (one is for work, one is mine, don't ask). I am not sure why they have different apps for each. I am starting to use Strava more for analysis and comparison, since it seems to me that BT is not as strong on the breakdowns and splits. I am not sold on Training Peaks, and I'm really not sold on TP -> BT. It looks like there is some data loss, but I need to review it more side to side to get a better idea. And I still need to figure out my uploading. At this point, I don't know what is feasible to expect. I think this is referred to as a First World Problem |

Yanti - Big hugs to you and lots of prayers for you and your family on the loss of Dana. I can't even begin to imagine losing a pet that is really close to me. I luckily have not had to go through that yet and hopefully it will be many many years before I do. My little one is only 1 and a half, but she is my baby. Sending lots of love your way. Kirsten - great to hear about your brother! So glad he is home and on the mend. Chris - As far as the Superbowl - I am going to go with the Bronco's because Peyton Manning plays for them and he used to be a Colt. Lame reason, I know. But hey, gotta root for someone! As far as me - Work has been super busy this week and I am so happy that it is almost Friday! I had a very exciting evening tonight as I spoke with a potential employer about what I need to be doing to further my career and it almost felt as though he were interviewing me over the phone. And I think it went very well He gave me lots of good advice and is setting up arrangements for me to speak with some of his colleagues who have made the career transition that I am pondering (switching from lab work to the sales side). So all in all, a good night for me (other than the fact that it's extremely cold outside!) Ashley |

I decided to do a gym session whilst he swam and as I started some light deadlifts a nice old lady said she hoped she wasn't in my way; me being a nice English chap - originally - said of course you're not and moved even further away. As I grabbed the bar to move it across I felt a twang in my back and I've been crippled with back spasms all day....bugger! I'm working all weekend and have a 2km ocean swimming race next weekend so I think I'm in trouble, I'm so pissed off! |

Some days I wonder why I get out of bed Then I think about how much worse it is for some others, I think about how I can hope to help someone, how much I get from the interactions I enjoy with others, and whatever crud my day has in store for me isn't so bad. Enjoy whatever your day has for you and approach it with a smile. It makes people wonder what you are up to. Hm, no, but I have something vaguely triathlon-related to share ... (GASP, STOP THE PRESSES ... ) I bought my first pair of lightweight neutral shoes the other day (because they were on sale and under $50, pretty much my only criteria other than "they fit", which is a hard enough one to fulfil, you can relate) ... New Balance 630v2. They weigh less than half of what any of my others do! Also, at the end of a long run when heavy shoes are soaked, they become real clodhoppers. The lighter, more flexible sole and uppers material also means my giant flipper feet can hang nicely over the sides--truth is no matter how wide the shoe, my feet will do that so it's actually really lovely to have material that doesn't push back at all.
