Fortissimo, HUGE congrats on finishing the school year! I successfully taught face to face for 180 days without getting sick & woke up May 22nd (the day after the student's last day) full blown sick! Fortunately, not covid (pollen related crud), but seriously!

Janyne, I'm really picky on shorts, and the 400-mile shorts were always my go-to, but eliminating tri bike short issues (since I sold the TT bike), I've fallen in LOVE with Zoca Gear's cycling shorts.

JBac...that bike is STUNNING!

In mountain bike & gravel land...I'm taking a 5 hour MTB lesson with Shanna Powell (Brevard, NC area) next Wednesday and I feel like a kid, I'm so excited!

I am insanely jealous. Manatees coming to my area to ride MTB and gravel, and I can't ride is killing me. You will learn a lota

MTB lessons are a game changer... I took a class recently on cornering and switchbacks, and wow...! 300% boost of confidence and now I ride the corners-period. Not like a pro - but I ride them! Without the fear and a vision of myself rolling down a cliff

Crazy jealous of your lesson with Shanna!

Racing Manatees!!!

June 5-6

No one has confessed to having an event this weekend, although we are all jealous of Nancy's mtb lesson next week.

Is anyone racing or doing anything else fun?

I also don't see anyone with a major injury - I hope everyone stays safe and healthy!

I completed my very first mtb race last Wednesday. It was more like cross-country. I went with my two mtb girlfriends and none of us expected what was happening haha I did not realize XC is so much different from mtb. At the start line we were the only ones in regular shirts and shorts - absolutely everyone else was wearing fancy racing outfit (it felt almost like bike transition at TRI!) I was last one from the very first moment... which is fine - it's not something I have been training for. I do more technical stuff with rocks and drops. But I am extremely proud of myself, becuase I trule gave absolutely everything i had from me (i almsot breathed out my lungs....) I was happy top see I cought up all the girls on uphills! I lost them going down in no time... (I do not like speed going down, except road bike, thus, downhill is not my strength). It was fun. Interesting experience. I realized for racing I prefer road bike and triathlon kind of thing. For mtb I prefer to take my time and not have the pressure.
Oh - bonus point everyone (even spectators) got free beer! From some family that brews beer in their garage.... it was delicious!

Hoping to get off work a little early this afternoon to head south to Homer with my daughter. Taking the boat out for halibut and salmon. If the weather and water cooperate, our plan is to head out this evening and fish, anchor down in a cove and do overnight on the boat out in the bay, then do more fishing in the morning.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!!!!

HI everyone - I am long overdue for a proof of life post!  I hate that my office prohibits posting to public sites.  I regularly read everyones posts and try to follow blogs, but am not able to publicly post.

Sooo....... my life has not altered much during covid.  At first I was on an every-other-week schedule, but have been back to full time in the office since the end of last summer.  I am happy things are starting to reopen.  I am training for Musselman in Finger Lakes, NY this July - my first race since MiamiMan in 2019 when I qualified for world championships in aquathlon and aquabike (and since made the difficult decision not to travel internationally this year even though 2020 was postponed to 2021).

Hills have always been my kryptonite.  I have chosen almost all my races based on a flat course.  I will take brutal wind over hills any day!  It's always bothered me that I am such a scaredy-cat about hills (I think I have anxiety-induced asthma and my HR spikes to zone 5 just thinking about hills).  So I decided this was going to be the year I worked on that.  I think Musselman is hilly - I have looked at past race reports and my Team Z coach as informed me about ~3300 feet of climbing. Yikes!  That said, the race website advertises a new course for this year and *claims* only about 1400 feet of elevation gain.  I'm not sure I believe it but am cautiously optimistic.  Still... I continue to torture myself with trying to get better at hills.

To that end, I wasn't feeling comfortable on my tri bike, so I made a super spontaneous decision to buy a new road bike to help me with my goals!  She doesn't have a name yet, but here's what I ended up with - didn't realize it was still hard to find availability after covid demand for bikes.  So far I am quite pleased and feeling great..... but still not so sure of myself on hills!

Keeping with the bike theme - I bought new wheels for my Aspero. Like so many things bike, they are not in stock right now but should be sometime in July. I hope so, b/c one of the reasons I bought them now is to use them during the CNC mountain ride in early August. They are Zipp 303s.  Until my discussion with the bike store peep, I had no idea there was such a thing as a hookless rim! I still don't really understand how the tire stays on, but supposedly it does! Any Manatee ever hear of these new-fangled rims??

I'm really looking forward to getting these rims in so I can use the Aspero for my hill rides and give my P2 more of a break. I haven't ridden the P2 since at least fall of 2019 and today when I brought it to my hill ride I had a big fail when putting on my bike shoes and realizing I brought the SPD gravel shoes and not the Look cleat P2 shoes.

Hi Jen!!  That sure is a good looking bike, I really like the blue.  May you and it have many happy, safe, FUN miles!

Musselman - someday I want to do that race.  The Finger Lakes region is so gorgeous (gorge-ous, LOL) and lush with wineries, breweries, some distilleries popping up, and natural beauty abounds with lakes, forests, farms, fields, and waterfalls.  And the wine festival at Watkins Glen Speedway usually coincides with Musselman race weekend.  Most of the hills in that area are rolling but there are some steeper ones going up/down from the lakes.

I'll echo what others have said, the bike is a beaut and having a road bike will help with the hills both with stability and gearing.  That course should be good for you and your new steed.  This "unofficial" version of the route shows a max grade of 5% with one pretty long climb.  Most of that climb does not seem substantially steeper that the ride you did last Saturday, just longer. Just remember, winery visits AFTER the race

I totally love the bike!

I feel you on riding uphill. This has been my nemesisi for a while. This year I have had a similar goal, to become stronger on the hills, especially more technical ones, on MTB. Eventually, I'd jump onto road bike. Anyways, I wantex to let you know that once you start, it gets easier

HI everyone - I am long overdue for a proof of life post!  I hate that my office prohibits posting to public sites.  I regularly read everyones posts and try to follow blogs, but am not able to publicly post.

Sooo.......

Another 'proof of life' post from me too. I was away from home for a couple weeks and that's not the sort of thing that should get posted online.

Also, I agree, very nice looking bike!
