Hey all - just checking in as it's been a week since I said anything.  Been a crazy busy week at work and with family things.  I had a great Christmas and I hope you all did as well.

This week will be another week of minimal to no workouts and then after the new year, I'll be at it strong!

After Monday I fully expect to get caught up on the boards here.  You all have a great Sunday and be the positive person in in the life of somebody else on Monday.

It's midnight and I'm watching the 2008 Kona Tri. and looking over all of your up coming races, and looking at all the races I have access to.  As a newbie to the sport, what is reasonable to expect?  How long do I need to build a base before doing my first Sprint? Is wanting to do an Oly by the end of the year to much?  Any advice would be great.

Thanks

First and foremost - strive to finish a Sprint and have loads of fun!  From what I am reading from many people that the more you have fun and not have "high expectations" such as don't expect to podium or finish the race in a ridicilously short amount of time.

That's my goal until my first Tri in May. I'm starting to do the run, and even though I'm slow as heck, but I'm having LOADS of fun because every bit of training actually gets better over time.

Build a base - I personally have NO base at all, except for the bike. I am currently training from scratch for the run, and swim (though I know how to swim, just never did training swim). I think it's a good goal until May, then I have another sprint that I want to do in Aug. Plenty of time to have already build up a base, then I'm aiming for a OLY in November. So, for 11 months of training, I think that's plenty of time to do a OLY for my case.

If you have experience in one sport over the other, that helps a lot.

There's a lot of free plans here ranging from 16 weeks to 22 weeks. I personally will use some, especially for the run and swim, but mostly will tweak on my own because I already have cycling base, and have done 50 miles, and I'm training for a metric in April...so I have to do more cycling load than what the Beginner Sprint plan asks for.  The Olympic plans do have plans starting from the beginning - and you just need to be able to swim for 20min, bike for 30min, and run for 20min.   There's even Couch-to-Olympic plans that is much longer than 16 weeks so you can build a base with this plan.

Good luck!!!!

Can you give us some background on what you are doing with s/b/r now?

I was a distance runner, an average biker and completely water phobic.  I never learned how to swim, not a single stroke and nearly drowned as an adult.  I took lessons over the winter and even though I was awful and still scared, I did my first super sprint that summer. The swim was only 200y in a man made lake. That distance and location made me know I could get through it and get on to the stuff I really like.  Find a good venue and a smaller race if you can and go for it this summer.  Like DJ says you aren't out to win it, but have FUN!  Could you do an Oly at the end of the season? Maybe, kind of depends on your answer to the question above AND your motivation/dedication to train over the summer with all the other things that might get in the way.

For what is it worth, I started with Sprints in Year 1, moved to Olys and a HIM in year 2 and am planning IMWI in Year 3.  I have quite a bit of time to train compared to most. We have no kids and my job as a consultant is amazingly flexible. Many people hang out at a distance for a long time before jumping into something longer.  My progression might be a little slower than most, not sure.

2009 was my first year. I did 5 or 6 sprints and finished with an olympic. So your goals are realistic. My first 2 sprints were pool swims and the next 3 or four were OWS. The lengths got longer, both swim and bike. The only thing standard was the 5k run.

I agree that it will be a lot more satisfying if you go into the races with a realistic goal. There is a lot to learn, e.g., transitions, how to run off the bike, etc. The better the base that you have the more fun it will be. Having said that it is not hard to compete a Sprint. Most people build up a lot of tension before a race especially their first (me for all of them). Just relax and soak it in. It really is fun.

Oh and I would recommend going and volunteering at a tri before your first race, You would be amazed at what you can pick up just by observing one up close, like how various people set up their transition area.

I know it is not Wednesday, but with less than a week to go in the New Year,  do you have any volume goals you are trying to break?

I did a quick check of my own '09 S/B/R and while I don't train to volume, I was suprised to see I will break 4000 miles on the bike this year (a 20% increase) and I will have swim, swam, swum? 200 miles, (a 90% increase! I wonder why I am not faster???).  I knew running would be downbut had no idea how much(1500, -40%)  given the switch to triathlon and two injuries this year......no other '09 goals but to heal.....

So anything you want to accomplish in the last 5 days of the year?..... and drinking an extra six pack doesn't count John, Andy and Tony.....and neither does J&C Birdy.

Just looked over mine last night and the only thing I really want to do to finish out 09 is to keep running consistantly like I have been doing for the last few weeks.

2009 saw a 240% increase for me in the swim and a 260% bump up in the bike.  It also saw a drop of almost 50% for my run.  But those stats are so misleading since I didn't do much during the first 6 months of the year and crammed in a bunch over the next 3 months then took Oct. and some of Nov. off and started back again.....NOT the ideal way to approach this sport.

I will be racing on the first.  Resolution Run 5k that will be fun and I probably won't push it since it is not a PR course and I have a 10 miler scheduled for the next day.

I will be hitting 1000 miles run today.  90 some short of 2000 on the bike so might be close, could be on the trainer a bit on NYE .

A sprint is easily doable and imo, an olympic by the end of the year is easily doable.  I did my first sprint without any training.  As a matter of fact, I had never been on a road bike when I did it.  I did my first sprint in August of 2008 and did an olympic as my first event of 2009 and felt great.  You won't have any trouble.

My wife and I had a rather somber Christmas.  Her grandmother was put in the hospital about a week and a half ago and has really gone downhill since.  On Christmas eve, they took out her feeding tube as it was no longer doing any good.  Now, we just sit and wait.  This is a tough time of year for my wife anyway.  Over the years, she has lost her aunt a week before Christmas and a close friend two days after Christmas.  Now, to add this on top, well, it just sucks.

On a brighter note, I think all of our family members feel really bad for us and realize how our week long trip to Tortola cannot get here soon enough, so everyone decided to give us money to put towards it.  Now, other than spending money, our trip is practically paid for - house, plane tickets, rental car, etc!

As far as tri stuff goes, I got a few of the basics that I asked for - gu, cliff bars, some new swim goggles, swim bag, new swim fins, a couple pair of running shoes.  Fortunately I don't need much else.

Dinner at my folks house last night was amazing.  My brother (who is a chef) cooked all of the food.  There were about six of us, but had enough food for twenty.  My brother is always coming up with something different everytime he cooks our holiday meals.  This year tops it all - JOHN LISTEN UP -----BEER FLAVORED ICE CREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The beer was a chocolate stout and OMG!!!  He really needs to sell it!!  To go with the ice cream, he also made a satsuma sorbet with satsumas straight out of Louisiana!  Chocolate + beer+ fresh oranges = heaven!

Hope everyone had a great day.  It's time to go run.

Some of you guys might remember that last year on Dec. 31st, I was 2.5 miles short of 500 miles running for 2008, and you guys wanted me to go do the run that night (I did not)... I will hit 1200 miles today after my morning run!  Holy smokes, training for a marathon will increase your run volume, that's for sure!  My bike, I will hit 2200 miles by the 31st, I went over 200,000 yds swimming earlier this month.

The crazy part is looking at the hours spent training this year come to about 400 hours so far.  Back in 2008, about 250 hours total.  Goals in the last five days are to continue to drag myself out of a warm bed when it is still dark outside and get moving.  If I keep changing my workouts to later in the day because it's dark or cold out or I have other things to do, I know it'll make it easier to just put it off until the next day.

The best goals that I met were to stay injury free and to continue to improve on the swim (which is easy since I have a lot to improve on!)

Chris, so sorry to hear about your wife's grandmother.

Like everyone has said you have plenty of time to train for a sprint tri in 2010. I suggest finding at least one and signing up so you have a real goal.
I went from doing absolutely nothing exercise wise to training everyday and completing 4 sprints last season.
You can get plenty of help and advice here on BT.
Some of my favorites were smile and thank the volunteers.
Happy training!

We are very similar!! I'm about 23 miles shy of 1100 on the run... Wasn't even shooting for anything; to me, any year with 1000+ miles run is a solid year. Now I need to figure out if I want to break that. Arrrrgh. Bike I am 11 miles shy of 2200, so that will be hit no problem. Swim I don't focus much on. I didn't track bike miles for all of 2008 (it was awhile before I had a bike computer). In 2008, I only ran 686 miles -- a pretty weak year for  me. Wow, didn't realize that, but I know I didn't do any big races and tried to ride a lot over the summer.

Well shoot... now my wheels are spinning (the ones in my head, that is!) and I'm getting a little adrenaline rush to break 1100 run miles for the year. Darn it!! These mentor groups are so inspiring for me!! LOL!

Chris sorry about your wife's grandmother.

I had a milestone this AM. I just ran the farthest I have ever run in my life: 13.61 miles in 2:15. I am sore, especially my finicky hamstrings. *Whew*. Anyway the marathon training continues. Those numbers will be growing in the coming weeks. My coach has me doing 22 miles in February some time.

Thanks for all the great advice.  I have never really done much as far as endurance running.  I was a running back when I played football, so my focus was sprinting, I never had to running more then 40 yards at a time.  A few years ago I bought a Klein road bike, but have never really train with it, my longest ride was 75 miles. I went for one ride last year and did 50 miles off the couch.  As for the swim I know how to swim well enough to have fun with my kids at the pool.

I hope that gives some kind of back ground.

so today's ride.  i was freezing cold. foot was numb by 10 miles into the ride.  i don't have any cold weather gear so i'm just thankful the fashion police and aero police were not out today.   the wind is up so anytime i'm heading north, which was most of the way out, i'm flying along at a stellar 14 mph.   i'm trying a different nutrition scheme and my stomach NOT happy.  basically i wanted to throw my bike into the bird sanctuary i ride by and walk home.

i get to my turnaround 22 miles from the house. i slow down to stop and turn around.  unclip my right shoe.  and fall over to the left.

as i laid there in the middle of the road you fools are the first thing that pop in my head.  first i smile, then laughed a little, then i could barely get up i was laughing so hard.  finally back on the bike settled in heading to the house and realized how freakin' happy and lucky i was to be out there.

i'm heading to warm shower...

edit... damn i forgot one of most important things..  THANKS MG!!!!
