It seems a bit shallow to say this, since so many of us deal with such intense life issues. But I need to get it off my chest: I am struggling very hard with a bout of depression right now. The last day has been extremely challenging. I say this not because I need anything in particular from the Pod, but because I think too often those of us who struggle with this keep it hidden and put on the happy face. That is not the right thing to do. I wish I had the courage to say something like this to my IRL friends, but saying it to the Pod is a first step. Love you guys!!!

Fill a tub with water, That way you have a supply to refill the tank on the designated toilet. and have some water for other uses. I lived in rural areas growing up and recall many trips to the lake to fill buckets no matter the season. Its always good to have a working toilet.

It's a random song, I can't control it, and it's been different for every race. It's almost to the point where I can hear the song, but I know it's in my head. No need for earphones. For my first aborted HIM (they cut the bike to 29 miles due to snow, and I switched to the du as water was below 60 and air temps below 40), it was classical music (Grieg). (Maybe cold = Norway = Grieg?) For my first real one, for some reason, "I think I can" from "The Little Engine that Could" (not a song, but whatever) was stuck in my head for most of the bike leg, and for the run, "Battle Hymn of the Republic". For the next one (Vietnam), sadly it was the refrain from "American Pie" (This'll be the day that I die....). And for my last one, a Hawaiian reggae song by Bruddah Iz. I was really jamming for that one. I had them when I ran marathons too, but can no longer remember most of the playlist. Only "California Dreaming" (when I qualified for Trials, of course in California) and "Sound of Silence" (Beijing). Maybe I am mangling the titles. What's weird is I don't pick the music. It just happens, like someone turns on a tape. Yes, I am nuts. I think I did too many solo long runs and swim hypoxic sets when I was a kid, and my brain developed this as a defense mechanism.

It doesn't even have to be a race for me. If I'm on a long run my mind will latch on to a song and play it over and over. It's often a song I don't even know all the words

I wish I could get a song stuck in my hear. I usually think about work, which is a double edged sword. I am spending my run time thinking about work and not enjoying the run, but I have solved so many problems during my run and saved so many bad days, that it balances. That might be weirder than latching onto a song. haha

Be careful what you wish for ... I had 99 bottles of beer going on in my head at IMWA ... and I don't even drink beer! Ha!

I know what you mean about runs, though. Best working-through of personal, work, and education conundrums ... but yeah, I didn't enjoy the runs much either when that happened.

Depression is not a shallow issue!!!! I wish more people had the courage to speak up when they are hurting. I know we are just your invisible friends but know that we care about you and will be thinking of you and praying for you. {{HUGS}}

Enjoy the blizzard, stay safe. My DS2 is also in it's path.

What is your IG name?

Indeed. I'm highly impressed that you did post at all. People don't hesitate to post about other serious illnesses, but depression can extinguish life (and quality of life) as surely as any of them. {{MELON PRESS}}

I went through several but one particularly horrendous bout of depression rather openly on BT. That is, others posted for me for a while with my permission because I just couldn't, but the support literally kept me alive.

I haven't heard from her for a week or so. She was still entering runs in her log up until last Friday so I just figured her eyes were causing her problems again. But there has been nothing in her log all week. Maybe they are away.
Head-and-eye-problems Mary is HappyStoned in Colorado ... Chicago Mary is Maria ... but I think she did have a run last Friday. (I barely know what day it is today these days) I heard from Maria on the 13th, has she posted here since then? Will PM.
OK my bad, sorry. I thought Maria said something about going away. Yanti you still doing Busso Oly next weekend?

Mary G is one of those really odd cases where I actually call the person by their real name (Maria) but nobody else does!

But no, not to be confused with another actual Maria, NC Maria.

I also think it's hilarious Stace Face and I live basically in adjacent neighborhoods of Perth but our main mode of communication is the Manatee thread

Yes, Kingsley and I are headed down for the Oly. We booked the room through to Monday, we'll drive back Monday morning and then I take my WA driving test in the afternoon nothing like packing a day in! But I don't feel like getting up early (you know what I'm like on days I get up early!), doing the Oly, then driving back. Maybe we'll drive back that evening.

Anyway, feel free to come down or not, or do the swim bit for fun or not, or whatever suits you.

NOOOOOOO@@@@******!!!! You are giving me PTSD. That was the song that was stuck on my head over the last few miles of my very first marathon.
I think it scarred me for life--can't believe that at 46 I still have nightmares about a race when I was 14. It was the most epic splat against the wall you can imagine, only....ooops....I was winning the race, so quitting really wasn't an option. This guy kept telling me to "Just make it to the next cone". I swear there were 5 million cones lined up in those last two miles. So I was hearing the beer bottle song in time with the cones. That's the first time the "music" ever happened to me.

There's a clear correlation in my case (and probably yours) between what the song is and how the race is going. IM Vietnam = epically bad (the run, at least). If it's an upbeat song (Battle Hymn, Hawaiian reggae), it's going well. If it's just weird, like Grieg or Sound of Silence, kind of a mixed bag, the latter from the very creepy Beijing Marathon. Visualize running an entire marathon with the roads lined with expressionless Chinese police linked arm in arm, and no one's allowed to cheer or approach the runners closer than the police line. No one ever cheered for me, even though I'd written "Good Morning Beijing" in Chinese on the back of my singlet. A few police commented, "Foreigner," and that was it. I had some friends stationed at various points hoping to cheer me on, but they could not get past the police line so I could see/hear them. Plus the crowd control officers are tall, and my friends all happened to be short women! I burst into tears when I finally encountered someone I knew (our school PE teacher, who happened to be a track official, manning a checkpoint as I entered the stadium at 41 km.) I really hope the Olympic athletes got a warmer reception than that!

Hey all. A quick fly by.

First: I did a really quick scan. Depression is NOT trivial! Glad you felt you could share with the Pod. The Pod has your back!!!

Steve: How are you? Sending healing ju-ju to you. And the other DL folks.

I am NOT going to be able to get to Atlanta. We are snowed in. about 11 inches total with some drifting and a good coating of ice, to boot. I won't be driving anywhere til at least Monday. I am going to try to "run" the race anyway but it will be on the TM inside. I could snow shoe it outside, but I don't have snow shoes. We lost power for several hours and internet for a whole day! and probably will again since the winds are picking up. The price we pay for living in paradise.

Stay safe all you folks in the snow. I hope you have good gear for getting out and playing in it.

Have wonderful days all.

Neither - try sheet metal screws into an old pair of shoes. It works really well and costs a few $'s.

I use YakTrax. They are tight enough or I am slow enough that I don't need the extra strap

I did the Spinervals IM Louisville workout today. This was my first time using Spinervals. I cut my teeth on The Sufferfest videos. I have to say if this is indicative of Spinvervals workouts, yikes! It was so dull! If I weren't on my bike, I could have fallen asleep. The intensity and energy of The Sufferfest videos makes them much more engaging to do.

Depression and blizzards both stink. The good news is we are here to support you and encourage you. I think that is one of the best parts of this group is that it is so supportive and I think a safe place, to share when you are down.
The thing we won't do is shovel snow.

Where I live, I only need them 4-6 times a year but when I need them, I need them, you know?  That's why I was thinking something removable rather than have a five year old shoe with screws.

I have the YakTrax walk $19.99 pair (I'm cheap). I have had them for 6 years. I also choose the glow in the dark neon green pair. I can be tacky like that. haha

I think I recall that shovel thing of which you speak from growing up in Colorado. In NM the preferred method is to wait a couple hours for the sun to melt the snow. When it's too "deep" or "cold" for that to happen we use a broom to sweep it off the walks.

As for traction, I've heard the screws in old shoes from some runners here but I like the convenience of being able take them off/on if the terrain permits or requires it. I like my NanoSpikes.

20 miles in the books for me today. It weren't pretty, it certainly weren't easy, but it's done.

What does the ground look like for you guys? In my neighborhood I'll go between shoveled & unshoveled a dozen times in just a couple miles, whereas on a trail it'll be snow the whole way around. For me, the cheap yaktrax were terrible in the neighborhood. Felt very unstable on the pavement and it was ridiculous taking them on & off again so often.

Neither! Your regular tread should be totally fine unless it's icy. If it's icy, I might not running it. Itherwise. Microspikes (or Nanospikes) if it's deep, snowshoes (unfortunately ) or skis!

People don't shovel sidewalks here.  Never in neighborhoods.  They just wait until it melts which, in this case, will be several days. My plan is to have them on hand for running on a rails trails system here (the ATT).  Also, we frequently get sleet or freezing rain and not snow.  In fact, it's been a few years since we got straight now.  Right now we have an inch and a half of sleet on the ground.

Great racing today, Adrienne and Ann-Marie!

Good luck tomorrow, Randee and Robin  You've made it to your destinations, right?

Hang in there, DLers  ....and blizzarders. Or is that blizzardees?

You were in my thoughts on Wednesday, Steve. Thanks for popping in to let us know all went well.

Love the pics of the weekend fun, Sean and Adrienne.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
