Got the bikes back from the shop yesterday so we are ready to ride if we get a decent weekend.  I am expecting slower times, shorter distances, and much harder work once I have to actually propel my own mass vs riding against a computer program.  Spring tune-up X 3 = $263.  I was told this was mostly because two drive trains had to be completely disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled.  Plus I supposedly bent and cracked my wife's cables when I installed her basket mount to the front of her bike.

I am obviously going to have to check YouTube for plans to build a bike stand and dig out the bike maintenance book I was given years ago.

New direction or new distance?  Didn't athletes first have to swim upstream a bit, then go downstream or am I confused with another race?  What do you think about the new course, Janyne. having raced it previously?

Yes, it was 400m upstream and then a U-turn + crossing the river. This is 100% downstream, keep left the whole way down.

I'm excited. My knee had better cooperate!

I was waiting for this after the RDs post last year about looking at the suggestions about all down stream and something like if you think I can’t add mileage for the bike course just wait!

If you were writing a recovery week, how much would you reduce the load by? 25%, 33%, 40%, or even as much as 50%? My initial thought is 33%, then restart at 10% under previous max, then 10% over. And then, for me anyway, is back to a recovery week again. I'm thinking I need to use percentages and not try to stick to 5 or 10 minute intervals.

I'm considering the need for a 2:1 ratio instead of the 3:1 my plan has for March. I think I may have overdone it today, been feeling like my butt was kicked ever since I left the Y at 11:30.

We have a little golf tournament in town in 4 weeks that, according to some research, puts over $100 million into our local economy in a week. That doesn't take into account the $100+ million that the golf club makes for the tournament with ticket sales, television advertising, concession sales and merchandise sales. There is some conjecture that the tournament may be players and staff only which would hit a lot of businesses and homeowners (who rent out their homes for thousands to five figures for the week) pretty hard.

As a teacher, we've already been hit really hard by the flu for the past 6 weeks with some students missing almost 2 weeks of school after getting flu A and then getting well and getting hit by flu B. I've missed more days due to illness this year than I have in 16 years of teaching. While Coronavirus doesn't necessarily 'scare' me in that I think I'm going to get deathly ill, it does scare me that it's going to have a pretty significant impact on my community and my job.

Also, as an FYI, I was supposed to race a 10k this morning, but I had my 2nd yearly round of cold/flu-like stuff this week and have missed 6 days of workouts and another day of work.

The good news is that the sun is actually out today and it's not raining like it has for the past 2 weeks straight. I may even ride my bike outside tomorrow if I feel up to it.

I crashed my bike today...ON THE TRAINER, ugh. I was cleaning (I won't make that mistake again) before my ride. I move my bike, and didn't check stability before my ride. I didn't get a minute into it, when I made the slow motion tilt. I landed on my ribs. I set everything back up and rode about 35 minutes. I coughed and that was it for the day. I'm pretty sure I bruised my ribs. Now it's ibuprofen and ice for the rest of the day.

I have the fenix 6, for me this is a new feature because I had the vivactive for so long. Was surprised that the 5k time predicted was so fast and the marathon so slow.

I have been using since xmas and have finally had a bump in my predicted VO2 of course this dropped my 5k prediction too.

On Covid 19, I also live in NC. Debated for a longthis time about traveling to NH for thnd e kids spring break (2 cases there). I have seen about 10 people with influenza A or B over the last 2 weeks. Reports from CDC seem like flu is much worse. Both have limited treatments once it diagnosed (short window for antiviral for influenza). Covid seems to cause the most devastation to the old and chronically ill. My wife and I work in the major medical center in our region and our exposure is far greater from work than travel barring we dont go to an endemic area. Many medical universities have band all academic travel. I feel is largely due to a fear of quarantine and loss of productivity. Perhaps a lot of overreacting but this is the first major outbreak in the social media era and its easier to over react than be judged later

Yes, I did race this morning.  I though I would be pacing my 5-year old but my wife wanted to see me PR so she took my pacing duty.  I ran a 17:42 which was a six second course PR for me and possibly an all time course PR (winning times for races in the rural area that I live are typically around 21 minutes at races I don't attend).

This was the pre-season race for the McAlester Youth Running Club that my wife and I started this year and we had 13 people from the group in the 1-mile and 5K races.  I did circle back to run the last mile with my 5-year old.  She finished in 44 minutes.  My oldest daughter who is now 10 years old did her first 5K at about the same age when she was 5 years old and finished in 49 minutes.  So, our 5-year old had a great race.  My 10 year old also had a great race today doing 29:00 minutes for a 2-minute PR. She was first place in the 6-10 year old age group.  My 8 year old had a 4 minute PR (but didn't make the top 3 in the 6-10 year AG).  It was 52 deg F and clear at the start of the race so conditions were favorable for fast times.

Here are some of the youth club members that did the 5K.
