I actually have two races. One was this morning. A time trial to the top of Tiger Mountain. It's sort of a race, as in you are running with other people and you do a "mass" start but it's more about your progress. They have a site to track your time over the successive trials. I made it to the top first with a time of 29:12 Now I have to keep up my mountain running so that I can wittle that down! |

Good luck racers. I may do a 5k tomorrow too but it would be more running than racing. I have a goal to do at least one quality session per week and the local 5k's are a great way to get a tempo run in. Sounds like the DL'ers are on the mend but hope to see full recovery sooner. |

Therapist* this morning doesn't think it will become an issue as he's thinking I should be out of it within a few weeks. Only thinking recovery type effort level now, but that's still more power output than most would do. To give a reference point, the IF for my recovery rides has been 0.45-0.50. IM pacing and easy effort riding are both around 0.60-0.75, so a notable amount less. The power output is still 150-160 which can still bump the heat production just a little. Classic clip! Admittedly, Tobias comes to mind, too, although his fubar is a bit different. Oh yeah, and congrats on the progress! Woooo! ETA: yes, 2Toms Stink Free spray is very helpful for stinky things. Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees 2015.4 CLOSED (or Poptart/pet pic ticket) Originally posted by StaceyK Originally posted by Asalzwed Salty not sure about this, but what about having a chat with the coach of your current group, telling him where your head is at and asking him if either he is willing to do it or if not does he know someone suitable? Or is he willing to mentor you while you "self coach"? By this I mean you come up with the plan and he goes through it with you and makes any suggestions or something like that. Originally posted by jmkizer Originally posted by cdban66 Originally posted by Asalzwed Originally posted by cdban66 Adrienne, I think that you have received a bunch of graet advice. Mine is very simple and to the point. Do what makes you happy. Go run in the mountains, on the roads, in a group and alone. Do it all, not to be the best in the world, but to be the best you. There is a lot to be gained by rereading your treadmill advice and applying it to other things. Use the tools you have to improve. I think that where I get stuck is that there are two elements within "what makes me happy" when it comes to running and they contradict one another a bit, one is the pure joy of doing it and the other is pushing myself to, as you say, be the best me. To push myself to be the best me, I have to sacrifice a little of that joy (IE executing a challenging workout a couple times a week.) And I am sure this is true of everyone. We are all in this because we enjoy it (or I hope so!) but we also all need to push ourselves, too. And while satisfying (particularly afterward) it's not always pure joy. If it were up to me and I could be my best me by meandering around in the mountains every day, I totally would! I think you are saying that balance is the key. It seems to be one of the pieces of advice we all give, yet finding the balance is a challenge for most of us. I believe this is because we look at balance in the context of a week or a month. ie, "sacrifice a little of that joy" vs "meandering around in the mountains every day". I'm beginning to think that balance is a life long thing. I give you example one, DubSix. In 1987, I started down what I thought was my lifetime work path, which was restaurant ownership. A good choice at the time, as it afforded me a few things in life, yet took away a few others. 12 years later, I wanted a different type of life, so we sold our half of the business, moved back to Florida from LI and began working in IT in the financial industry. A completely different life, one that afforded me completely different opportunities. And, those 2 choices have given my life more balance, due to perspective. My point is that life affords us each different opportunities, and while I am not in favor of floating through life like a leaf on the breeze, I do believe that taking advantage of some of those changes leads to more internal balance through understanding of ourselves. Were I you, I would be grateful for the experiences you've had road racing, Cross Country racing, and being a member of the team, but be open to the pull of something new. Easy for me to say, yet so much harder to do when we dial in things like emotions and such. And who is to say what we should be pushing ourselves with anyway? Should we push to become more in tune to the world around us, push ourselves to be better runners, push ourselves to be better leaders or employees or whatever happens to be in our world at that moment? Remember that the only constant in life is change and if we are not willing to change, then we atrophy. And that is not good, not as runners, but even more so, not as people. One of the items in your toolbox that I admire is your ability to think along with your willingness to push, ask, listen and adjust. Don't overthink it all, but think it through. And have fun with the process, because in the end, what is life but a process of going from one place to another? There is also the fact that pushing your self could mean many things.
Really excellent stuff you guys. Lots of stuff to think about for sure! And interesting comments on coaching too, something else I am considering. There are certainly pros and cons. I seem to do pretty well solo and don't struggle TOO much with motivation. I also hate when people go out too fast or race workouts, further building a good case for solo workouts/coashing. Probably the biggest cons for me are finding someone I can really trust and finding someone that I think can do a better job than I can. I feel I have a really good understanding of myself, what I can handle etc. I think I would need someone who is very good at what they can do and can see things I can't. And like I said, I would really need to trust someone a lot to let them override my guts...ya know?
Again, lots to ponder.
In the meantime, to inject some speed into the time before marathon training starts I am doing the New Balance Winter Grand Prix, a series of races that alternate between road, track and xc. Additionally, I am doing a first Friday hill climb time trial. So, fun stuff! Been trying, but still can't really put thoughts together in any sort of coherent fashion. Lots of good things to think about from others. |

Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees 2015.4 CLOSED (or Poptart/pet pic ticket) No racing this weekend, except racing to get some errands done that I've been neglecting due to finishing coursework and report cards! On the subject of "training races", if you ever want to do something truly ridiculous......try doing a run threshold test in a race that's not quite long enough. That was last weekend at the Terry Fox "Run" here. My coach was all enthused about me doing the test in a "race situation" and that is the only one in the next few months around these parts. Only it's not really a race, just a Vietnamese -style "happening", with 15,000+ (really--I know the organizer, and that's the count) people, 99% of whom walk, mostly as part of corporate "teams" with banners. It IS a race for the maybe 50-60 people, both locals and expats, who are actually runners and duke it out at the front for the chance to say they "won" Terry Fox (a non-race with no age groups, no timers, and no prizes). And, oh yeah, the "5K" is actually a 4.03K. (If it weren't, I would have finally made my youthful goal of sub-17 last week with a smashing 16:53!) Anyway, instructions were basically to "keep going for a few more minutes if you can to finish the test". It may not be a race, but in the eyes of my students and ex-students, many of whom were volunteering at the race, I had just "won" as I crossed the finish line ahead of any other woman and all but maybe five men (not a deep field this year!). They were high-fiving me, but I had to keep running, turned, and went on for almost another km. around the block dodging all these people and motorbikes and trying to keep my HR at 175 without puking in the 90-degree heat. People kept trying to point me back toward the course. They must have wondered who this idiot woman was who managed to get lost on a course with 15,000 people! By the time I finished the 20 minutes I didn't know whether to puke, roll around on the ground laughing, or both. Yes, I have actually rolled on the ground laughing after a race. Maybe this bunch will appreciate it. I'd just run a marathon at altitude (Crater Lake) and finished in 96 degree heat. Actually wasn't feeling that bad, considering. But someone at the finish line was passing out what turned out to be a self-published book about (I think) the Badwater ultra, called, "Marathon and Beyond: Into the Valley of Death". It was just the timing.... I laughed so hard and my legs were rubber away, just fell over and started rolling! |

Thanks for your feedback! Mary TI can bring on some strong feelings in both directions. Haven't read a full book of theirs, but have made more progress integrating things from some others who are not TI. Adventure Bear is a TI coach and is on the site from time to time. From her explanations, it may have been awhile since TI has put out a book as they have gone more to various types of e-books or electronic publishings. So hesitate on saying to go ahead and read this. Many do well in being able to go farther with it, but a rather common criticism is a need to undo the TI teachings when the swimmer gets other instruction in trying to go faster. And again, the newer work may address that better, so if one did want to look into TI that sounds like the better option though I haven't seen the work myself. |

Thanks for your feedback! Mary CARAMACS oh wait, what? Some people find it really helpful. Personally I've had to teach way too much "TI un-doing" as Ben-person pointed out. Did you get those materials for free or is it a coupon for more lessons? Whatever you've already got (or can get cheap) can be helpful but I wouldn't put more money into it. For free, really go over and DO all the beginner's material at http://www.swimsmooth.com
They also have excellent detailed workout programs for every level, it's not much money for one of the books and it's super-light, waterproof, easy to bring with you.
