Two items of note, neither of which are important at all in the big scheme of things, but: 1) I did a bone density scan for science and I am better than normal for my age with my spine density (which could either be because of exercise and diet or just because I'm taller and therefore have taller/bigger vertebrae) and am just a touch above average with my hip density.  2) I finally registered for the local tri I want to do in July and it feels good to finally commit to it, yay!

That is all, carry on.

Both items are great!  I had a bone density scan last year. My right hip showed bone loss. Although I shouldn't have been surprised - I have almost all the risk factors, I was.  So now I get to take extra calcium and vit D and do even more weight bearing work outs!  Every woman should get this easy peasy test.

Woo yoo, you bet I'll carry on!!  Great news on both fronts!

So much of this post doesn't make any sense.

The organize part? The toss junk part? The collected candy part? The no chocolate part?

The two pumpkins were 1/2+ full of random candy and the bowl is obviously full. They took up a whole pantry shelf. I sorted through the three and left about 15 pieces in each pumpkin. Chocolate is ALWAYS the first thing to be eaten...so none "left over" for the garbage.

Mary and Ann Marie:

As for the environment, the ants and beetles and flies and other decomposers can get the sugar high instead of my kids.

Traumatic? Why do you think there are 15 pieces still in each pumpkin? I wasn't ready to deal with the inevitable questions.

And since a picture is worth...yada, yada, yada...

Holy crap, this is getting to be just a tad ridiculous - but I want Jonathan to know that I did mention him in my conversation with the attorney today when we were chatting about IMTX!

Who's this interview with, the CEO's sister's dog?!  Haven't you talked with everybody by now?  You better get this gig after all this effort!!

Uh-oh. Hopefully she has a cat.

Fingers crossed for you guys, Monica.

I ran a 21:36.  Good enough for 6th place overall, and 1st place in the 30-39 age group!  I was so pumped to place that high!  When they were handing out the age group awards I thought maybe I'd get 3rd.  When they called 2nd and 3rd, and it wasn't me, I was bummed.  I was really surprised to take 1st!

It's also technically a PR.  So it was a great day all in all.  Finished the race and then rolled out with some friends for a 20 mi bike ride.

That's awesome, Tom! You're making a strong comeback

You can sleep when A/C goes out? Ours went for 3 days a couple of summers ago...miserable and cranky and tired!!!

I would not call it sleep, I think it was staying in one spot to produce a new sweat spot, then move to a new one in 30-70 minutes. I am really hoping they come get it fixed today, but we will see.

I'm on for another Wednesday night triathlon tomorrow.  Hopefully we won't have to do the rain-shortened course again, that was rough with all the chip seal.

Has anyone made the switch to the new Garmin Connect site?  Is it any better/worse than the old one?  I'd like to know before I switch over.

I need some bike advice.  Does anyone have any tri bike models to recommend for $1.5-$2k?  The local tri shop stocks a few brands such as Giant, but I'm wondering if I could find something pretty decent on eBay.  I'm just not sure what to look for.

I think I'd like to keep my road bike around for centuries and other group ride scenarios.

Honestly if your going to spend that money it's worth it to go get fit. Tri bikes are such more sensitive to fit than a road bike.

The local tri shop does a good job of doing fits.  So get a fit before beginning a bike search?

Yes. Different brands fit different. I good fitter will recommend a bike size and give you a list of brands that will fit you best. It's best to go to a fitter that has an actual fit bike like Retul.

Yes, and more specifically, a good fitter will give measurements that relate the various contact points you make with the bike. That is what's meant by "size". It won't be a 57 or a Large or something like that, but the spacial relationship. From there they should be able to say what models of what brands should work well and then you'll have the size. This is the most important part of finding a "good bike". It's quite likely that a lot of bikes may work well as manufacturers often try to make them so a lot of people can use them. Some will still do better than others, but never know if you're more of an outlier. The drop from my saddle to the arm pads is over 7" for me. It looks nuts on its own, but fine with me on the bike. I need something with a rather low front end, which is becoming harder to find. The really fast bikes seem to be coming up more. So it hasn't necessarily been so bad for me to stay with a relatively slow frame as I can get low with it.

not sure how many of you folk listen to the podcast IMTalk - it's a great show by two New Zealanders (you might need subtitles!) Bevan James Eyles and John Newsom. John's a pretty handy triathlete too, qualified for Kona this year as his "project 2014"

Well for some reason I seem to have become a regular contributor to their show which I love! I don't have anything groundbreaking to tell them but I bother to do so and that's enough!

Bevan is a bit of an armchair psychologist has his own podcast too which I'm just getting into.

Then today I'm listening to Vinnie Tortorich as I do every Wednesday - this week's was hilarious, no real content just great schoolboy smutty humour some of which was about me, again not sure how that came about!

I have run Monday and Wednesday this week, 6km each time. Felt the best today than I have in a very long time.

As you werel..

I hate school buses - especially when they break down in the pouring rain and time the call for me to sort it out just as I am about to get on the treadmill!!!

//rant over

Mon I have discovered the reason for the 7+ interviews. It is so they don't end up in the position that my company is where we have to get rid of someone after 5 months because their principles and philosophies don't line up with the organisation's and it is causing major damage to our community's perception of us. This has happened despite numerous conversations with the person prior to them commencing work with us.

For your sake I hope today's (tomorrow for you) interview goes really well and is the last one and they give you the job and a wonderful pay packet to go with it.

As you were

Originally posted by SteveyD Well, finally got back on track again after the 3 peaks weekend. We managed to raise a nice £2275 (just shy of $4k) for the local Childrens Hospices. Out of the 20 walkers, 9 completed all 3 within 24 hours, 2 fell outside 24 hours and the rest either managed 1 or 2 mountains. It was very eventful, and sleep deprived driving was "interesting" , but all done, no one injured/died/etc so its all good! Thanks for the inspires guys In Other news, several of the walkers from the 3 peaks are deciding to do a 50 mile bike ride from London to Cambridge as a follow up.... and trying to get me involved. I've done it before (3h59) but I was actually fit then ... gives me a goal to work for but it is only 6 weeks away. Should I do it?

DOOO EEET!

you must be new here if you even asked!

Seriously, if you've done it before, you must have a bike, right?  And do you want to do the ride? If you got on the bike today, how far could you ride it?  How many days per week could you ride?

haha Touché I am almost certain I could complete it but it may take me 8 hours at the moment.... I reckon if I just got out on my bike and went a steady pace, i'd be able to do 15-18 miles at a sensible pace on the flat. (London to CBG is very hilly) As for how often could I train? Tricky one. I _could_ train at lunchtimes, but would make my life unbearable thanks to the "lovely people" i work with. I could probably do 2/3 rides a week in evenings - between Football monday, cricket tuesday, thursday saturday and wednesday band rehearsals... Do I want to? Yes and no. I dont like failing, but I know I need to get fitter again...

1. CONSPANKULATIONS STEEEPHEEEE

2. Trying is never failing.

3. You talked me into doing a 10K swim on no, and I mean NO, swim training (this was in the dying-of-disease years) the night before at, what, 10pm? And the longest I'd ever done was 5K. The year before.

Do it. Train. Have fun. You'll get fitter, you won't die, you'll probably surprise yourself.

It's not like you're asking if you should run a marathon in a time limit in 6 weeks.

If everything works out and you get there in time then Austin's Texas Longhorn 70.3 would be a great way to get settled into Texas It's not my favorite race but it's still an Ironman 70.3 and alot of fun. And it's in October so it's not hot. I think it only got up to 85 last year

Obviously "hot" is a relative term...

Beat me to it!

Despite coming off of the first winter I can remember when the cold actually got to me (I can run in the double digit below zero zone for only SO many days in a row), I'm more than a little nervous about the 8 months of summer in Austin, as my thermostat is genetically very northern European (75 or so is my preferred upper limit!).  That said, one can adapt to anything.

Austin is happening for us (should be tied up in the next day or so, but looks pretty certain), so I sure hope so!  Mon - I really hope you beat me there!  Is this next interview the last one?  I won't tell you how many it took me (I'll just say, "Not fewer than 7").

FastFox (ponder no more), nice race!  x2 on getting a fit first.  I bought a used Cervelo P2C in that same range, but I dropped some coin on a couple fit sessions to figure which bikes (there were a couple that fit my simian body habitus - there's a reason, or two…, that my rugby nickname was Primate) to target on the used market.  Great approach, if you can make it work - I'm very happy with the outcome (hey, the bike - and wheels - were "new to me!").

As for throwing out bags of candy, that just doesn't register (even to a guy who is cleaning house with a cold hearted efficiency at the moment!).

Matt

You will just have to get used to running before the sun comes up.  That's standard practice in Florida.  Even then, the humidity is killer, but you do adapt.

Wait, who threw out bags of candy?  I must have blocked that post as too traumatic !

Well in the heart of the summer it does not even get down to 75 here. There will be many nights where 82 is the low. Austin is a neat town tho. Y'all will both enjoy it and I expect to see you both signed up for IMTX next summer

Went on my first real group ride last night in a very long time. I had my served to me on a platter. Geez it hurt but felt so good. I haven't really stretched my heart out in many months with all the long easy Ironman stuff. Had a blast but I'm going to feel it today. Was also nice to be on my road bike again.

I know I have also been very remiss in not posting pictures of the new kitty cats--unfortunately they were recuperating in (poor Ryder's) cage from their sterilization surgeries but they are all better and getting used to the "cat room" (my spare bedroom) and we are slowly introducing them to the rest of the house. They're very friendly but had been quite traumatized by the time they got here, for various reasons, but they are absolute sweethearts, very easy to handle, just very tentative as any animal in a new environment will be.

I will let Kingsley help with names because you all know what kind of names I tend to come up with!

The one on the left I've been calling Tuna and the one on the right, just Two. Two does NOT like having her picture taken, same expression in every shot and that's the best one

Very cute (but you can tell they're hunters at heart!).
