Trainer rides are often more uncomfortable than riding on the rode where you are moving around move, eg, off the saddle more.

That's generally true, but the specific discomfort mentioned sounds a bit odd. The hip impingement I wouldn't expect to really change and it's more indicative of the fit. It's really something that should have been taken care of when setting up in the first place. The shorter cranks can help get a little lower without that impingement occurring, but I'm wondering about the quality of the current fit. Maybe bumping up against some other adjustment limit of the bike?

I've gone through 2 seperate seat tests, one for my ISM and one that resulted in a Specialized Power on my road bike.  Both of those test periods taught me exactly what Ben stated above.  If you want to go pay $$$ for a fit, then that is not a bad idea.  Try to find someone that is good, because the fit plays a big part in saddle comfort.  However, I am also a proponent of making your own subtle changes to improve your fit, if you have the ability.  Seat up/down/forward/back, bars forward/back/up/down, spacers, etc.  You'd be surprised on the differences you can get out of the equipment you have. From there, cranks, stem, bars, etc.  If the bike fit works for you, then the saddle should be one of the last parts in the equation, at least it was for me.  Just make sure to change only one thing and mark where you started.

My two cents, your experience may be completely different.

Wait!  After folks like Randee have tried every saddle under the sun, you say that you changed out almost everything and your saddle works fine for you!  NOT FAIR!  (Of course, I think that mtb saddles are more forgiving than tri saddles but still).

I have only ever replaced 1 saddle and thats on my current road bike. The one I got with it had a nose that curved downwards and I prefer a flat saddle front to back. Other than that I have always just used the saddle that came with the bike and gotten used to it. 10+ bikes so far.

I'm jealous.  Bikes seats and I are not friends.

Bike seats HATE me with a loathing that is both terrifying and horrible.

Saddles are a lot "harder" on the trainer.  When you ride outside, you shift around a lot more and on the trainer you are generally in one position most of the time. Even a saddle that is awesome outside can become uncomfortable for me on trainer rides of 90 minutes or more.

Originally posted by Jet Black Ok, I need some re-assurance or advice on my IM run training. Background: I've been doing BarryP since last May. For those unfamiliar & interested: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=1612485Overall training plan -> I use training peaks annual plan to help me come up with weekly hour targets, fill in my barryp runs and 3x masters practices and then fill the rest of the time I'm supposed to get on the bike. I built up to 40 mpw (4/8/12) by August and did that for 2 months, then had a couple of tapers/races to end the season. I basically ended up taking all of November off after the season was over. In December I started back at 25 mpw (2.5/5/7.5). I've slowly worked my way back and I'll hit 4/8/12 in 2 weeks. Run Plan: I've got it planned out to where I'll increase my long run (on barry's advice), every other week. I'll do this until I hit 20 miles a month out from the race. It looks like this: 12 weeks out: Runs of 4 miles, 8 miles, 4m, 8m, 4m, off, 12m ----> 4/8/12 (40 mpw) 11 weeks out: 4/8/12 10 weeks out: 4/8/14 9 weeks out: 4/8/12 8 weeks out: 4/8/16 7 weeks out: 4/8/12 6 weeks out: 4/8/18 5 weeks out: 4/8/12 4 weeks out: 4/8/20 3 weeks out: 4/8/12 2 weeks out: 4/8/16 1 week out: 4/8/12 So basically sticking at 4/8/12, but increasing the long run every other week. I didn't increase any of the other runs because I thought a base of 40 mpw was probably good enough and I'd be better off biking more with that time. Couple of questions: 1. Should I stick with this or should I bump up all of my runs to get me to 50 mpw before only working on my long run? 4.25/8.5/12.75 -> 4.5/9/13.5 -> 4.75/9.5/14.25 -> 5/10/15 2. Is 12 miles too long for a week out from an IM considering I'll have been running 40+ mpw for 3 months by that point? *I hope all that made sense.

I'm sure that others will chime in on this.  I saw your question yesterday but wanted to think about how to answer it because I know that your goals are pretty impressive.  My finishing times are 12:42-13:36 but my age group is different than yours ;-) In the end, the only thing that I can offer is that I have never had a long run of anywhere close to 12 miles the week before and IM.  In fact, I've always had a 2-3 week taper.

B2B 2011 - long run one week out was 60 minutes, two weeks out was 90 minutes and three weeks out was two hours.  Longest run for the training cycle was three hours

Vineman 2012 - long run one week out was 50 minutes, two weeks out 75, three weeks out 90.  Longest run for the training cycle was 3 hours.

B2B 2013 - long run one week out was 60 minutes, two weeks out was 90 minutes and three weeks out was two hours.  Longest run for the training cycle was three hours

Don't know what would have been the plan for Chattanooga in 2014 but I do know that the longest run was 3 hours

Vineman 2015 - long run one week out was 30 minutes, two weeks out was 90 minutes and three weeks out was two hours.  Longest run for the training cycle was three hours

Manatees!  I notice that Jim is being shy and not posting about staying motivated on the trainer. I believe that he is currently using the trainer in the kitchen listening to music, which is a better setup than my cycling buddy has riding in the cold garage, but not by a lot.  Please post your suggestions. Maybe some motivational music ideas?

  • Rosalita - Bruce Springsteen
  • Rolling in the Deep - Adele (some of the mixes of this are good too)
  • Lose Yourself (anyone who has done the B2B full knows why!) - Eminem
  • 4 Minutes To Save The World - Madonna
  • American Woman - Lenny Kravitz
  • White Knuckles - OK Go

That was my first suggestion -- access to computer in kitchen or time shift to get TV time.  My other ideas were motivational music, which I suspect he has covered, and spin class.  In the hierarchy of training, a trainer is closer to riding outside than spin class but if you get more in class...

I use a mix of netflix and music, depending on intensity. For 2-3 hour rides done at 70% I'm ok working my way through a few episodes of whatever on netflix to take the monotony away. Anything above 85% and I can't really concentrate on watching anything other that a countdown clock for the interval, that's when I use music, mainly repetitive dance type mixes. I also set myself little targets ie when I've had enough I'll promise myself to stop at xx km because it's a nice round number, but when that arrives it's 2h 13m xx secs, which I can't allow myself to stop at, so I push on to 2h 15 min, but then I'm at xx km and y meters etc etc.

I wish my trainer were in my kitchen. I ride in my very cold basement, staring at a cement wall while my daughter's cat, Flufy (with one f) yells at me (I think she has seen the Biggest Loser and considers it her duty to motivate me. Of course it is all in cat, so I really don't understand her). Normally using The Sufferfest or if it's an easy day watching Netflix.

I also seem to be extremely hungry lately after my workouts and probably have been eating too much right after my runs. Anyone have any tips on how to deal with that. It seems especially bad after longer runs and after swimming. I second Sean's statement on no blizzard here in Texas. 70s yesterday, but definitely windy. On my run yesterday I pretty much had front wind the first half of my run and then, would you not, when I started heading back it stopped, sigh.
seeing as you have finished doing your budget -want to come do mine now?
If it covers a free trip to Australia sure

I've seen her at tax time. She may get that desperate

Oh did I omit some details? "Doing my budget" involves dealing with 5 school principals 2 government departments 2 controlling companies 1 accountant from one of the controlling entities that I truly think still believes the only place for women is in the kitchen, and a government funding formula that takes a 5 page spreadsheet to spit out an approximation of what you might get. Then once you get it in the black you have to get it past the Board of Directors which includes 2 accountants that like to question the assumptions that you have made on absolutely everything. At the same time as doing this you also need to complete the financial reports from last year, deal with the auditors, staff 5 schools for the start of the new school year. Relocate the new staff from where ever they are to where they need to be and make sure that they have to appropriate licences and clearances to teach. Sort the school bus routes for 150 students that attend 2 of the schools. Sort the new pay rates for all staff for the new year. And answer a billion questions from staff who come back after 4 weeks of leave, all tanned and relaxed. These questions can be about anything from the latest update of the software package (that you don't use) to the new corporate branding scheme, oh and because they leave everything to the last minute of course they need to know NOW. Add into the mix that your incompetent boss left at the end of the year after taking 2 months "sick leave" and having a public rant at the end of year function (her leaving is a good thing) but they aren't replacing her, which is ok because they are putting place support for the school principals so it will all be good. Right. Then to top all this off school starts again for the new year on Feb 1. Jan 26 is a public holiday for Australia Day, so lets throw a 2 day state wide PD course in at the end of January that is compulsory for all staff to attend. But it's ok, cause to help me do this I have a salt of the earth assistant who pays the bills and deals with the majority of payroll. I do actually normally really like my job and the majority of people I work with. I would just happily give it to anyone who will take it between December and February. Sorry about the vent. I always lose a little grip on sanity at this time of the year and not being able to SBR at present as cut off one of my main stress releasing avenues.
Wow o.O I am so glad I don't have your job right now. :-D You have my sympathies.
That really sounds overwhelming... And I am obsessed with budgets and spending/forecasting analyses... February is almost over..!
So today my Boss jokingly told me I was fired in front of 350 people so I jumped up from my seat yelled "WOO HOO" and ran from the room. My assistant then followed me saying "if she's going so am I" Everyone got a good laugh out of it and he told me after that I couldn't leave, but he was concerned about exactly how quickly I started to celebrate and leave.
Well played!! I'm sure you replied, "So, about that raise...."
x2! I hope you did.

I do the same thing. A little OCD for those round numbers is a good motivator. Sufferfest is my go-to.

Total subject change, and for that I apologize.  I'm having trouble concentrating at work because I just found out Dad's house has its first showing tomorrow after only being on the market a week!  I'm excited, scared, and nervous, but mostly excited.  Can't. Concentrate. On. Writing. Code.

I've spent the last couple days in heels (hells) because the brass is in town. Today they came up to see our little Santa Fe office. They just left. Immediately the heels come off and I'm checking in here. I just hope I can run later after two days in those torture devices!

Oooh, heels can be evil, especially when one isn't used to them.  Good luck with running!

Maybe some motivational music ideas?

  • Rosalita - Bruce Springsteen
  • Rolling in the Deep - Adele (some of the mixes of this are good too)
  • Lose Yourself (anyone who has done the B2B full knows why!) - Eminem
  • 4 Minutes To Save The World - Madonna
  • American Woman - Lenny Kravitz
  • White Knuckles - OK Go

I don't have a trainer of any type, so I am just thinking out loud, but some really like Podcasts and audio books. I personally prefer Trance/dance music whatever I do.

Good luck with the showing! Let us know how it went

I had to wear heels at the place I used to work for. The best way to learn how to wear those bastards was when I had to runnn to catch the train. And it was winter and very snowy. And there was a crowd around me that also wanted to make it to the train.
The other times when I can manage the balance in high heels is when I'm drunk But that doesn't happen often anymore (thankfully!)

I also don't have any experience with the trainer. But the only thing that motivates me to the treadmil is having my tablet with me and watching Twin peaks

Speaking of Twin Peaks:
have you guys watched it? It was such a big deal for my generation and I think I was the only one (plus my younger brother) who did not watch it. This series was a huge obsession in Poland in 90's. I finally decided to watch it and now I cannot stop! I do not regret I did not see it when I was younger, because I would probably not notice so many fantastic things Lynch did in that movies: from shots, to edits and montage. And I really enjoy the humor

I also seem to be extremely hungry lately after my workouts and probably have been eating too much right after my runs. Anyone have any tips on how to deal with that. seeing as you have finished doing your budget -want to come do mine now?

Nah I do the budget remember
Besides I get paid alright.

I have to agree the second season is not as dynamic as the first one. I read some reviews that said it was never revealed... We shall see..

Not only is he a great athlete, he is a great mentor. I have been in his mentor group for the last two rounds and he inspires and encourages our entire group daily.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
