Yes I learned a lot about pacing. It's obvious but it really hit me that I'm not going to be able to really give an optimum all out effort unless I'm practicing to do so. The 20 week HIM plan that I'm following rarely, if ever, has me go at 5k pace or sprint distance on the bike. Without doing lots of maximum effort practice you can't expect to go out and nail a maximum effort sprint race like that. With that said, I think I did just about as good as I could have, save for maybe a few seconds to a minute on the bike. At first I was just trying to recover from the swim but was still ticking away at 22-23 mph which was my goal so I was happy. Got passed by a few fast guys but the last guy that passed me never got more than 20 yards in front of me. I was still doing 22-23 so I was happy to sit there but at some point I realized I wasn't in pain anymore and that I had stopped racing. So boom, upped the effort for the rest of the bike but there was only a few miles left at that point. Originally posted by Jet Black Checking in. Race went very well. I think I left some time on the bike course and maybe the run but overall I can't complain. Finished 12th overall and 4th in my age group. Was hoping for top 10 & top 3 but oh well. It was fun when it was over but I definitely thought to myself halfway through the run, "why am I doing this to myself?" Lol That's great! Terrific finish for any race, but for a first? Awesome. Did you learn a bit more about pacing from it? Oh, and if you didn't feel like that on the run, then it wasn't a race. Matt CONGRATULATIONS JETSON! Damn fine effort and frankly, as perfect execution as it gets when (as you said) you're not specifically training to race sprints. |

Ended up wearing a windbreaker, full gloves, and full shoe covers and was actually pretty comfortable. I wasn't ignoring your question about the wind. I just have very bad memories of it from Myrtle Beach last year and I didn't want to bring any pre-race negativity to the party. ![]() | ![]() What a great weekend for the racing manatees, wow and congrats to all! Erin - your family adventures are the best! Love the pics! Ann-Marie - that's very cool that you got to kick off your friend's adventure with her! Best of luck to her on her quest, and thanks for the link. It is something I would love to do someday, with the right person (truth be told I'd love to do it by myself but don't have enough faith in humanity, being a woman alone on a trail in the middle of nowhere). Maybe someday. |

This weekend I took her and another friend, who is hiking the first 10 days (about 140 miles) with her, to the start. I am so excited for her adventure and I little jealous too! Although, I really can't wrap my head around the idea of hiking every day (except for the few and far b/w days off the trail in a trail town resupplying and showering and eating real food) for about 6 months! For those unfamiliar with the AT, it starts in northern Georgia and almost 2200 miles, ends in Maine. I think about 80% of the intended through hikers drop out - the first in the first 100 miles! It is quite the undertaking. Most who hike the trail blog about it on trailjournals.com. I think it is very interesting reading the various accounts. For anyone who's interested, here is the link to my friends log To go live on the website, you have to send the administrator 3 entries and then subsequent ones go up as you upload them. So the first 3 are usually about the person prep and decision to take on the challenge. Her first, I'm actually hiking entry is from yesterday's hike of the 8.9 approach trail and 1 mile on the AT. I did this with them. It was awesome, but I am happy to be home in a nice warm, dry house with indoor plumbing a a bed! That is so cool. I'll be interested to read as she goes. I started following a guy from Iowa on IG a few months ago. He and his gf (I think) are just starting the AT thru. I'm really looking forward to seeing the pics he posts. It is so incredible to have the opportunity to "pause" one life and live another. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was out of town last weekend taking care of some action items for my wedding next month. Due to that my training over the weekend was minimal, but I at least got the quality work in that I had scheduled for myself. At least I'll be fresh for my local killer group ride tomorrow. See if I can last more than 10 miles with the fast group this time. |

Did you learn a bit more about pacing from it? Oh, and if you didn't feel like that on the run, then it wasn't a race. Matt I agree with you and the several others that you paced this well and, again, performed terrifically given the long course training you've been focused on. As a musing on training process, specificity in training is really important for performing toward the top of your potential (for whatever level of fitness you have). Fitness build is another issue and needs addressed, IME/IMO, many months before a targeted A race - but training at race specific intensities becomes key for the couple months prior to an A race. I like a lot of the newer stuff Joel Friel has put out, and his plans really focus on distance specific training profiles (going from general base to increasingly like the race intensities toward the race, over about a 6 month total period for an A race). So, you've been training more for a HIM. The base fitness from that is great for short course racing. However, the ability to ramp up to the intensity needed in a sprint to be at the top of your potential really does, as you and others have said, require race specific focus. So, if it's a B or C race on the way to an A race, it's a great test of fitness (a sprint is an endurance event, after all, and will expose a weak base if you even get close to the "right" pace), a great chance to practice transitions and such and a fun day! I loved using shorter tri's during my "rest and test" weeks leading to longer races (sprints for Oly's, both for HIM - and that's as long as I've gone). That you did so well is both a good sign for the longer race and also that, if you ever decided to do a short course focus, you could wring more top end speed out. While longer distances are **often** seen as the cool races (OK OK OK - not by everyone, but by lots of the general tri population, certainly), I did a sprint/Oly season during my first full year of tri (two summers ago) and LOVED it. Short course is a different beast and a different kind of awesomeness - the hurt is less sublime and more BOOM, if that makes any sense - but awesome for sure! Matt |

It all makes a lot of sense. My kids are pretty young now and don't have too many extracurricular activities yet. So I'm going to go ahead and knock out the ironman bucket list and see how I like it. But once I'm way busier with their activities I can certainly see focusing on the shorter races where you don't need quite as much base. The race was a lot of fun and as Mississippieee said, it is definitely motivating to try harder in training. I never would have guessed this, but I'm super motivated to get even more fit in the pool, whereas before this race I was pretty content there. Right now I can sprint pretty fast and maintain a pretty good clip without trying too hard just based on good technique. But I could really smoke the field if I could build my endurance. Thanks so much to all of my Manatee Podmates for all the support so far this year, it has made a huge difference for me!! |

I spend more and more time on the trail (am packing right this minute in fact) and can't fathom a thru hike. I think it's the solitude I would struggle with. Janyne, It's kind of hard to put into words fully--I want to do some fitness things that are challenging but not going to wear me to the bone. I still like running, but it currently doesn't like me. I am trying to hold on to a positive attitude for my HM which will probably be slower than molasses in February. I absolutely HATE that my legs have nothing in them--but accept that as the reality for now. That being said, I need to step back from all this to let the body recover. I will be doing PiYo and Insanity Max 30 along with other workouts to rebuild my strength, agility and flexibility. I am also feeling a deeper water kind of pull in other areas of my life that I really can't explore if I am spending all my available energy with S-B-R. Spiritual awakening of sorts. I feel in order to realize that full potential I need to focus there more. So, that's the long & short of it. Hints may appear from time to time in my blog but it's more of a personal journey at the moment. Edited by QueenZipp 2015-03-30 9:17 PM |
