Got into Tempe yesterday.  Beautiful weather.  Mid seventies, 7% humidity and no wind.  A little cool this morning (54 or so) but hsould warm up nicely as the sun come up.

phatknot - 2009-11-18 3:32 AM I dont think I will have much modesty during this day. Let them pull my shorts off-if they don't I will-I'm changing out of them to get the extra padding haha

Take a look at the wind speed graph on this page:

http://www.tempe.gov/wx/townlake.aspx

This appears to indicate to me that the winds picked up pretty decently midday. You locals may have a better read on this though. I'm still in Ga. until Thursday lunchtime.

That is true. Winds usually pick up and sometimes change direction at around 10am-noon. Thats pretty much a year round pattern but not as bad this time of year. I'll be happy if the wind stays < 10mph in the afternoon

Safe travels to you guys! Hoping to run into some BTers around the expo and athlete dinner. It has been getting chilly in the evening and I read that the athlete dinner and meeting is outdoors, so bring a sweatshirt!

Yep, the winds pick up as the morning wears on and canshift from coming out of the due east to more of a east/souteast direction. It's been in the 40's in the am and we should be ready for that on Sunday as a cold front is moving through on Saturday.

*Edit- I just checked the forecast this morning for the 22nd and now they have winds out of the south at 5mph. I would plan on 5mph being on the low side, but out of the south means more of a tailwind UP the Beeline and headwind descending back. THAT would be great, it's a much faster way to ride that road.

Thanks so much for all of your quick replies.

Final question: Does anybody know the approximate time that the race will open up on line to sign up?

Thanks and best of luck to everybody this weekend.

Looks like at 8:00 am today water temp is 64 but the outside temp is 54. Anyone with a tank top planning on arm warmers or gloves. That is going to be cold when you are wet. I was thinking of throw away gloves maybe?? and tube socks so I can toss the around mile 20.

Or should I HTFU

Ooooh...I'd love a gentle wind from the south...as long as it stays under 10mph! Although I'm trying not to obsess over the weather since there isn't anything I can do about that.

I've hit the point where I'm having issues sleeping at night. Last night brought a whole 4 hours. I am wiped out.

I get into town around 2:30 tomorrow!! I can't wait!

Destroyer - 2009-11-17 11:15 AM I'm scared of wetsuit strippers.  I didn't cover that in my training.

as long as they don't grab my shorts too!  well, if the guy is cute........................

That would be my only Ironman nightmare to date ... wetsuit strippers taking the tri shorts ....

Haha! I've been a wetsuit stripper the past 3 IMAZ's and I remember one hot guy had these little jammers on, and he was all petrified we were going to rip them right off. Well, I was behind him holding on to him when he sat down, and two others peeled his wet suit off him in one fast pull and he quickly reached down to feel if his shorts here there.  He said "Oh good they're still there!" And I said "Bummer for me though!" We both laughed and I did cop a quick feel as I slapped his azz as he ran off though and tell him to have a great race! There are some perks to wet suit stripping!!!

But seriously, the wet suit strippers are GREAT.  Here are some tips:  either by yourself, or with the help of the strippers, you need to get your arms out of your wet suit and the top down to just past your butt a bit.  Then you sit back on your butt on the astro turf and they will just peel it off you inside out in one quick motion.  They will then help you back up, hand you your stuff, and you are on your way.  Depending on how big of a hurry you are in, you can be in and out in 30 seconds!! But....the people moving that fast are usually the ones coming out of the water first.  Then there will be huge and steady wave of the MOPers.  It will get very crowded at that time.  If you can, move through the strippers and pick a team toward the back rather than taking the first one you see up front, and then blocking the way for people behind you.  Then it slows down to the BOPers (where I will be).  These people are moving a little slower, maybe just happy to have survived the swim, and might be a little more light headed and disoriented.  They have been out there swimming a long time.  The strippers take more care in assisting them and really walking them through every step they need to take.  Some people are really not with it at this point.  The worst is being on shore shouting and cheering for the last few stragglers to make the cut off time, only to see them just miss it.  Anyway...my little inside view of wet suit stripping for what it's worth.  OH! If you have a sleeveless with a top over it......if you keep standing and lean forward, they will grab it at the waist and just peel it off you inside out. Then you can get your arms out of the john top, down past your butt a bit, and then again sit and they will just rip it right off.
Fun but VERY ACTIVE volunteering job.  I highly recommend it!

I'm going with "cheap arm-warmers"....bought tube socks and cut the toe off.  This way when I warm up I can just throw them away at an aid station.  I'm riding with a tri top that has tiny pockets, so holding onto arm warmers for the remainder of my ride just is not happening.

I've done that for some running events....very easy to do and work just fine... I'll be doing the same (and I'll have a pair in my run special needs bag too)

Yeah Bryan still racing

Haven't done anything or won't do anything this week. I am gong to do the swim and bike for sure, I should be fine. I will see when I get ot the run, if I can walk comfortable I will walk to the finish.

I am going to Playa Del Carmen for a week the Tuesday after the race to get married. I don't want to injury my leg to a point I can't walk or have to use a crutch the week of my wedding, so I am not going to kill myself to finish the wedding is much more importnant then this race (even if Kara doesn't believe me).

Actually if I am off the bike in 6:10-15 and walk 15 minute miles I will be finishing the same time Kara will (13 ish) so we might finish together, then again she might pass me since this might be her only chance.

I am still excited about it but like you I love to train so something like this is not that upsetting.
"I race to train"

THE ORDU
All dressed up and ready to go. I'm using a Bento Box this time instead of my gel flask as it's going to be so cold, I'll never get the gels out of the flask and will carry the gel packets instead. I'll put my 2 Cliff Bars in here as well. Oh, and I put a picture of Jamie and the boy's on my stem for inspiration.

It sounds like you guys are putting some nice clothes into the SN bags.  Do we get those back?  I thought I read somewhere that we don't.

They throw everything into a big pile Monday morning for you to sort thru. Some organized into box by numbers (the way you put teh stuff into SN), but it's unlikely the right bags will be in the right boxes. I think I got all my stuff back... might have lost one bag. It's like a big Amazing Race roadblock.....

As for arm warmers. I used arm coolers last year. They were warm enough in the morning, then on the last loop when it had heated up a bit threw some water on them to cool down.

Ok, lets do gear check, what is everyone wearing race day?
Are the Tri Suits (one piece) practical for this event? ...thinking of wearing it for bike and run, not sure if the padding will be enough for bike ride?  or should i wear century shorts then change shorts for the run?

For swim, I will be wearing Wet Suit.

Please advise!

Here's my ride!  I may not be fast, but I'll be pretty.  :-)
Not sure what I'm wearing yet.  I brought lots of stuff and will decide later.  Tri top/tri shorts for the full thing, or maybe run shorts for the run.  If I change at all, it will be an easy shorts swap in T2.

I'm going to be at the swim tomorrow a little after 8:30am.  Then will go back to the condo (near the ASU stadium) to change, then go for a 1hr ride.  I'll be in a full sleeve blue promotion wetsuit tomorrow.  Long brown hair, well fed, and a scared sh!tless look on my face.

Paulette

If you are not worried about time I would change in T1. You will be glad you did when it is windy and 50 degrees. It is always a b*tch to change into spandex when you are wet just make sure you dry off well.

if you are riding clinchers I would carry 2 spares - tubulars I would carry one and place in SN if you have an extra. Clincher tubes are small enough that you can easily carry 2.

What is your swim time going to be- can I draft off you again? Met you at buoy 1 at 7:30
