All right y'all. DH and I are seriously considering taking a promotion to HQ in DC.  (I can't believe he is entertaining the idea)

It would be for 2-3 years, it would mean more money now and for retirement (high 3). We would be closer to DS2  but way far from DS1 and his girls.

I'm thinking we would rather rent because it's short term and mortgage interest is no longer helpful for taxes.  The problem with renting is the zoo that will be coming with us.

Anyone who has lived/worked in or around DC please give me your thoughts on being there, housing, working there and whatever else I don't know that I don't know.

It sounds like a great opportunity career-wise. All I know about DC is that there is a lot to do and there is a lot of traffic (but at least they have a mass transit system).

I'd love to be in the same time zone as you!

Maybe we can start planning a Manatee Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) adventure?

That ride looks cool! I pulled up the elevation chart and it looked like mile 60ish to 120ish was really steep. Then I saw the note that max % grade is 1.5%.  Sounds like a Florida ride!!

I think some of it is slow going because it's not paved but I think that it would be really fun to do.

ETA: You can get a service like Bike Bubba to move your bags and stuff. It's not cheap but it could be worthwhile to have SAG, etc.

I live in DC.. well DC metro, I am actually in Virginia.  I have lived all over northern Virginia and have worked in VA and DC.  Depending on your commute, the traffic really sucks.  There is a ton to do though and there are a lot of run/bike trails all over the place, so that's a plus.  I'd be happy to answer any questions.

I also have a really good friend who's a realtor and knows the entire area really well.  I'd be happy to put you in touch just to chat about different options and locations.

Had a great run today. There was thunder and lightening and periods of heavy rain, but there was no wind and it was fairly warm - it was fantastic.

It was "Baby turtle's" first organised event and the first time that she had run more than 5k. She did it in style with not one complaint and a massive style and she did it in an average of 8:37/km.

Thanks for the Birthday wishes. I had a good day. I didn't age up so it means I have to race against younger people.

While I cannot speak to housing or working (the only thing I know for sure is it's more expensive than where I live which is to be expected from a metro area), I can and will say that traffic is a royal b*tch in the outlying areas (Bethesda, etc) but I don't recall it being nearly as crazy in the city proper, yet the streets are far from empty.  If you can walk or use public transit that would probably be your best bet.

Yes, I am definitely hoping to be able to use the train.

I should also add that there are a lot of things to love about DC - it is one of my favorite cities to visit.  Huge diversity in restaurants, so much history, so many fun and interesting things to see and do.  And it seems to have a good running culture - there always seems to be people running around the mall and outlying areas.

I SURVIVED ANOTHER YEAR! I swear I'm getting to old for this - "you people" need to get you taxes in earlier and not make me pull my hair out on the last day to file!

Hope you all got big refunds!

In related news, I feel like my training has gone to hell the last two weeks - but I did take naps every day for the last 3 days

Happy Monday!

That does look like fun.  "Top the eastern Continental Divide at 2,392" gave me a chuckle though.

Yes, I am definitely hoping to be able to use the train.

my niece works and lives in DC. Of course, she is 20 something, so her idea of things may be different than yours, but she loves being there. She takes Uber or lyft most places. She also has a couple of roommates because otherwise she’d be living on the street!

Maybe contact Judi(QueenZipp) or Laura (Atlantia)???  I believe both of them are close to that area. I love DC, but I am an infrequent visitor, so take that for what it is worth.

I can't believe you are trying to slip the mention of the girls by us. Family is interesting, isn't it?

I forgot to respond to this...

Nothing sneaky about the girls. DS1 is still with the gf that has a 7 year old. They've been together over a year now and he'll probably stay in NM with them.

So as those of you that live in the northern hemisphere head into summer what race and/or training plans do you have?

My first is a weekend trail festival where we are doing
7k on Friday night
21k on Saturday
14k on Sunday

The race director for these events has a bent towards hills and torture (maybe from her time in the US Army ) so we are expecting tough runs with beautiful scenery. If you don't hear from me after the middle of May it means I died on the hills

I am kinda in the northern hemisphere--I think 11 degrees north! Assuming no medical issues or family crises....

IM Vietnam 70.3 on May 13
IM Calgary 70.3 at end of July
Maybe Crater Lake Marathon, if it still exists, in August
IM Malaysia on November 17

Anything shorter that looks interesting and isn't too far from Boise, or is on the way to somewhere we're traveling.

You have been a long running beast this year. I believe we'll be hearing more from you after mid May.

I had my only event of the year in January, so my calendar is clear. Which is OK, although I should probably get something on the horizon to get me moving more. In more exciting news, after a year and a half of trail riding, we are on the hunt for another new bike. This one will be for TW and will probably include e-assist. Purists will poo poo this idea and I just don't care. She'll be blowing me away on the gravel and it'll push me to improve. And, we get to spend time together, which is always cool.

Enjoy the weekend and race well if you are racing.

That sounds like a fun schedule!

Is your mom planning to keep the place in Boise or is that up in the air?
