This needs to be pared down but this is what I started with.  We had two 15-passenger vans.  Each van had a driver and six runners (so seven people total).  I did not use the sleeping bag except as an extra pillow.  I also did not use the iPod but I was really glad that I had the extra battery for recharging the phone, etc.  I should have brought more real food (trail mix, etc.)

* sleep mask
* sleeping bag
* pillow
* toxic waste bag (aka, trash bag)
* reflective gear
* headlamp
* three running outfits
* team shirt
* two pairs of shoes
* newspapers (to stuff in shoes if wet)
* iPod (for white noise during napping)
* phone, GPS, chargers
* money
* clean between running clothing
* camera
* ID
* toiletries, including toothbrush
* instant shower wipes from REI
* bodyglide-type lube
* a few snacks/real food, coconut water
* sandals/between run shoes
* towel
* The Stick

And I thought triathlon took a lot of gear!

Yeah, and those van rental's aren't cheap.  I think that it was $100/person for us to have it for the weekend (including gas).

Actually, I think we are using personal vehicles. Van 1 I'm not sure of the type. They just said they offered their van.  Van 2 (the one I'm in) is using a Yukon. Hopefully it has the 3rd row seats. So I guess we'll just be pitching in for gas. And magnets, we ordered magnets, I guess that's the Ragnar way of tagging other vehicles.

Hey, what training plan would you recommend to a friend just beginning triathlon?  I have a couple friends that want to try a sprint (300y/12 mi/5k) at the start of May.  I know how I would prep for myself, but I probably shouldn't write a training plan for them.  Any ideas?

I like the plans they have here - 3x Balanced sprint would be a good one as its time based which may be less intimidating to a complete beginner

Yeah, plans here should be fine.

Will do.  Too bad our mentor group isn't still taking members, otherwise I'd try to get the two of them in here.

There are a number of other groups that are taking people. You may want them to try Dominion's group:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=538239&posts=70&page=1

Also, Baowolf has a group that might be good.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=538215&posts=14&page=1

One of them is pretty small, so they may get some good attention in there. unfortunately, I don't rememeber which one.

I really don't know how he did it 24-7. We have had in home care for a couple of years, plus my brother and I have been helping, but the disease has progressed to the point that it is no longer safe to have her in the home and she needs 24 hour nursing care. It was a devastating admission for my Dad to make. I live 3.5 hours from them and my wife is a marketing director for a nursing home. We are going to move him into our house and she is going into my wife's facility. We spent the weekend preparing a room for him and preparing for construction. We are also going to have to build him a bathroom. He comes with his own medical issues.

I'm truly sorry to hear about your parents.  Alzheimer's is a mean disease to be sure, and it's incredible that your father was able to care for her as long as he did, solo.  As tough as it may be on all involved, it sounds like some wise decisions were made regarding your mom's care and your dad's well-being, too.

Gosh, I second this. I'm really glad your father was able to speak up and look after his own well-being. I am sure that was not easy. Glad your family could come up with a plan and it is pretty amazing your wife already has the connection to the nursing home. I imagine that makes it a little easier not having to do a whole bunch of research and knowing she will be in good hands. Hang in there.

Hi everyone - long time, no post. I am sorry, you guys are busy so i am not going to go back to catch up!

Back from a lovely vacation to the Dominican Republic. Fantastic weather, fantastic resort, fantastic time. I feel very fortunate to be able to do such a thing. Super fun time with our little one who loved paddling around the pool in her life jacket and having mommy and daddy's undivided attention. I managed to run a couple of times - our resort had a beautiful gym that we only discovered on the 4 day - it's brand new so it wasn't on the maps ...

February is a new month and i have a few things going on - planning to do a 'peach month' - i am setting some parameters as to what  counts for my peach and re-doing a junk food challenge i did with my husband last year.

how's everyone doing?

Hi Jen what's a "peach month"?

Sorry to hear this Jim.  Alzheimers is tough on the whole family.  I hope the transitions go smoothly.

Thoughts go out to you - it's a terrible situation but it sounds like your whole family is in it together and that makes it so much better.

Training is not so important but maybe some exercise will help manage the stress a bit. do what you can and don't worry about it.

sorry about this Jim, but I'm very glad to hear that your family has a plan to cope with the situation.

Hi Jen what's a "peach month"?

I took that to mean coloring in all of the days on the BT calendar with activities.

Remember back in the day when we did the JoGo Challenge?  Jo from Michigan would challenge us to do 30 minutes of activity every day for a month.  She said activity could be whatever we said counted (moving the lawn, walking the dog, SBR, etc.) and we had to log it in our BT training log.

I took it to mean a month of peach desserts:
peach pie
peach cobbler
peach smoothies etc

in other news, the CT STATE groundhog, CHUCKLES, has decided it will be an early spring. I can't trust an animal named CHUCKLES. I think we have a big storm coming - somehwere........I hope anyway......Just one......

Their interest is a 'maybe'.  Anyway, we also held an open house on Sunday, and the realtor said we had a good turnout with the most promising-sounding visitors being from the South Carolina area.  Not sure why they'd leave a warmer area to retire in a colder, snowier area, but maybe there are grandkids or family they want to be closer to around here.  Here's hoping someone bites soon!

Agreed, I like your peach month idea better, too, Randee.  Our PA resident predictive rodent, Phil, (perhaps you'll trust a rodent with the same name as your DH? ) also forecasted an early spring. I'm glad our burrowing critters are in agreement on an early spring!  I wouldn't be opposed to another big storm, as much as they can be a pain, so I can use my new nano and microspikes!

Hi Pod!
Thank you to everyone who shared a story, gave support, sent an inspire after my depression "coming out." While I have been diagnosed for over 25 years, sometimes each new bout feels like a rerun, with all the same struggles.
I am still feeling low, after having had a bad cold the last week or so, and coming back to work today is tough. I'm looking forward to getting caught up on the thread and getting back on the inspiration train a bit later on.

I am extremely sorry. I salute your father for taking care of his wife for so long. It must have been a very hard decision, but it is also a wise choice, given she will receive the necessary help. I think to some degree it is an act of love and not weakness, because it is for her good. His own well-being will eventually make him stronger to live with her, even long distance.
I will keep your family in my thoughts. I hope it will all work out.

Out of the subject, completely not triathlon related, and also referring to linguistics/phonetics, and not politics

My new favorite word in English is: "caucuses"! I love the way it sounds Because of the Iowa caucuses I now hear it on the radio all the time. I tried to pronounce it and failed, so I just indulge myself in listening to it

That's funny and interesting. You'll be hearing it for a few more weeks as there are more states voting in the near future.

Phew alright, got all my ducks in a row finally. Registered for all of my races (at least everything that is open)

Nabbed a charity spot for my marathon. Ironically I was out running and missed my registration reminder and it sold out. I think it will be cool to run for a reason other than myself though, so the "price to pay" so to speak was worth it in a couple ways.

It's going to be an interesting shuffle, training for and then running a "fast" marathon, summiting a mountain 2 weeks later, running an ultra three weeks after that. It might sound kind of out there but I think so long as I take care of myself, it should all play nicely together.

I think with your training you'll be in great shape for all three events. A charity spot for the race sounds fun too!

Coming off of a tibial stress fracture in 2000, stevebradley made his way into triathlon. Now he has over 60 triathlons completed and is one of the most active mentor groups on BT.

Not only is he a great athlete, he is a great mentor. I have been in his mentor group for the last two rounds and he inspires and encourages our entire group daily.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
