Yep, that's the one We only do 3 loops :-) But if I am not mistaken, ITU worlds were end of Oct/Nov. September is even toastier.

Yes, timing was much different.

Living in L.A., I know that Vegas worlds is not "Vegas," running down the strip, that would be cool!     I think the swim/run course for worlds is bleh.  Lake Las Vegas is (to me) a depressing place, swimming in Lake Mead at sunrise is sublime.  However, I must say that the bike course out there (for all the tris, worlds, old silverman, rage in the sage, pumpkinman) is GORGEOUS desert scenery.

I recall a discussion here some pages back about the W's lost to a straw sticking up in your grille...

Behold the Z4+/A2 combo!

Posted this over in TT, too, but wanted to show off the slick new setup here to the keepers of the aero keep.  Wink  Worked really well last weekend at Timberman - drink was right in my face (so I stayed hydrated) and was super easy/quick to refill.  Plus, I liked the placement of the 800 - easier to see than the previous mount on my aerobar proper.  That, and it's all tucked behind my hands (and I could take of the downtube bottle).

Sounds awesome - and what a venue!  Hope you have a great race - you've trained hard enough to derserve it.

Looking forward to the RR, for sure.

Nice - I just got the Z4.  Not using the A2 for the IM, but will still for HIM.  Will be doing something similar (but with a DIY clamp from Home Depot)

Thanks, workign with Shane has been a fantastic experience.  I told my wife I seriously cannot think of a single additional thing I could have done training for this race

btw, tomorrow will be my "official" race weigh in.  Goal was to race at 185, this a.m. was 184.  Assuming I stay away from the ice cream tonight, it should be good to go.

Thanks . One of the nice things about living in a WICKED old house. And you need some nice things, cuz most of the time it's a pain in the AZZ and a ton of work... That said, the random width pine floors (totally ripped up by the pooches at this point, but they're able to absorb that) are what sold me on the place. That and the proximity to a nice swimming pond, nice bike routes and some scenic runs. I hope we can still be friends even so... M

I just got back on the trainer Tuesday for the first time in over a month....I thought it was trying to kill me and I was nowhere near 277W OR three hours!  Sounds like you're putting out some big power these days, Ben.  What's next for you?

I'm pretty sure I could do that kind of power...oh wait, that's hours, not minutes.

Chris - best of luck at the race. Hoping it all comes together the way you want.

As for me, I ran with the LRS group last night, but I didn't realize they were doing a timed mile at the track. No that anyone will remember but I ran a 5:31 the last time doing this back in June, and was pretty happy with that time. Things didn't go so well this time round, and I went 5:51. I think I could have eeked out a few more seconds, but I really wasn't motivated to bury myself for this one. Either way, the lack of consistency is pretty apparent to me at this point - I need a plan of some kind. Winging it worked pretty well last year, but hasn't been as good this year.

Like I posted the other day. I need to find something that's going to work for me to get me faster on the bike. I'm thinking that likely needs to be a willingness to get on the bike 5-6 days a week over a good period of time, and a further willingness to suffer a bit, but I'm clueless as to how to structure it.

Is 5-6 really necessary?  I got some pretty good improvements off of just 3 trainer rides/week over the winter.  All 3 were hard though - no fluff.  The high level approach was one threshold ride, one VO2max ride and one longer'ish (not 3 hours at 277w ) ride with either more threshold work and/or some sweetspot stuff.

3-4 should be plenty. I've started doing 5 more recently mostly just because I wanted to ride more often. Last year was 4 and I was stronger then. Others who are faster have done 4.

Neil, I looked, but didn't really see details of the rides. It's all just mileage and time. What are you doing on them? The composition matters, a lot. There are similarities, but it's not quite the same as running.

I'll reply to both in responses in 1.

Arend - I don't know that 3 rides per week is going to get me too far at this point. At least that's what I'm thinking in my head. I've done Jorge's winter program over the years, and it seemed like it was beginning to have diminishing returns. Given the program should allow for improvement over your current fitness/power level, I took that to mean that I need to do things differently, but that the main limiter may be the fact I'm only doing 3 rides per week - although that has fallen off with poor training the past couple of months.

Ben - almost all of the outdoor rides have been ridden around 80-85% FTP, and most of that is steady riding over the course of the ride. Those longer rides have not really been broken into easy/hard segments. As for any indoor rides, these have typically only been around 45-60min, and it's been a mix of threshold, 3/4 x10min @ 90-100% and some VO2, 10x30sec / 5x1min. But to be completely honest and open, I don't think I've ridden as hard as I could on those trainer workouts (note the absence of 20min at 100%).

Part of missing motivation, is that I've wondered what I'm gaining from incremental increases in wattage. My times are not that different from last year, even though I had more/better bike miles last year and, even though not tested, I know my FTP would have been higher. So I don't believe that small changes of 5-10watts in my FTP is going to have much of an impact on my performance. Going on the assumption that a 10% speed increase requires a 30% power increase (all else being relative), I figure I need to find 15% over the next 9 months, which is roughly 35 watts - which is huge (and scary). I really don't know if I have the capability after 5/6 years of training to find that much of an increase, because finding just a few watts is hard enough.

I think sometimes it is good to switch up the stimulus.  Most of us turn up the intensity aspect, especially during the winter and for good reason (i.e. indoor training).  I think moving to 5-6 rides a week can certainly boost fitness if you have been riding the "intensity train" for awhile.  Especially if you enjoy riding.

That said, I usually always manipulate intensity because I have no time for big volume!!
