aidana - 2008-07-16 2:58 PM I swam this morning with Pete....it's cold but doable (is that even a word?) It does take some time for your body to feel comfortable in it tho! Oh well, there really is nothing we can do about it but DTFU (as djdavey would say).....LOL....

The update is much appreciated...do you mind if I ask if you were wearing a wetsuit (I am assuming so) and if so, if it was sleeveless or LS?

I do have a full body wetsuit! That helps tremendously!!!

Morning SoR Triathletes.  It is definintely getting close.  The nervous energy that wasn't there yesterday hit me full on today.  But that is a good thing.

Don't know about the rest of you, but I actually have a time goal this year.  Shooting for a sub 1:20.  Based on my training and what I did last year, and if I can beat the swim and come anywhere close to 2:00/100 time, sub 1:20 should be totally doable.

I know a few of you are first timers.  So your goal should be to finish and have fun.  But what about you veterans.  Any time goals?  Predictions?

crowny2 - 2008-07-17 8:12 AM .  But what about you veterans.  Any time goals?  Predictions?

I'm not really a veteran since it will be my first OWS tri, but here's what I have hanging in front of computer as a goal time.

Swim: 22:30 (including beach run)-this will be tough-might be slower
T1:        3:00 (pure guess)-I think I shoudl be able to be faster, but trying to be realistic
Bike:   37:30
T2:      1:30 (pure guess)
Run:    25:00
Total:  129:30
In my bike/run bricks I was able to a 38:30 (including stop signs and traffic issues) bike and sub 25:00 run so I think my goal times are realistic. I'd be thrilled with a top 5 in my clyde division, but a lot would depend on how fast the other four would be. My strength is I know the course very well.

Hey Crowny...I too have that nervous belly excitement as well this morning...

Goals...swim strong, bike fast and run, well, that all depends on that ugly visitor I get from time to time!   I just want to be under my time from last year...so, a 1:35 would be fantastic.  Anything above ly's time would be terrible!

All my races so far have been bright, sunny, and 70-85 degrees. The forecast for this Saturday is scattered rain, and the odds have gotten worse the past few days. What do RDs usually do when it's raining--hold the race rain or shine? What about lightning?

Generally they only time they call a race is if there is lightening.

Interesting. I would love to hit the overall time that thing predicts for my HIM. However, if I had to guess, I'd say it overestimates my time for the swim split and waaaaaaaaay underestimates my bike time.

Mine came out as Swim - wear a floatie and pray.  Bike - you're lucky you made it out of the drink, fool.  Lucky there are no hills.  Run - Need an ambulance?

Wow.  According to that I should hit about 1:16.  I'm thinking it will be closer to 1:19.  Cool.

Considering the fact that there are now cut off times, I need to do better then last year by at least 10 minutes in order to not be disqualified. I re-read my own race report...I would have been fine last year.  Barely. A bulk of my time last year was spent in the water...40 flippin' minutes in that stupid lake.  I'd like to cut my swimming time in 1/2 this year...AND THE WEATHER IS NOT COOPERATING.  I AM NOT HAPPY ABOUT THIS AT ALL.  WHO DO I HAVE TO BEYOTCH-SLAP TO GET RID OF THE STUPID THUNDERSTORMS?  I have a serious beef with Mother Nature right now...

Swim time-25 min
T1-3 min
Bike-45 min
T2-1:30 min
Run-40 min

1:54:30

Here's hoping.  Oh, and I'd like to not be the last Athena in...AGAIN.

SOmeone please explain this to me, as I am flabergasted....taken from the website literature...

The cutoff forthe bike is 10:00am. Any participant still on the bike at this time will be disqualified and will not be permitted to continue with the race.

How is that possible, if we are starting at 9:00 a.m.?  That has to be a typo!!

I have a feeling that is a cut and paste error from last year's race.  I think that will be modified considering there is a 50 minute cut off from the last wave on the swim.  And they are going off every 3 minutes.  Sorry.  It is a misprint.

Any veteran advice on two questions:

1. I've trained on the bike with and without socks and it doesn't do anything good or bad either way. My thought is I'm better off riding without socks and then put them on in T2. Figuring warmer, dry, less sandy feet easier to apply socks to.

2. Beach run to T1-should I be doing anything other than running?, remove cap, goggles, arms from wetsuit, etc. or just take care of all that in T1.

I'm sure its mostly personal preference, but just in case I'm overlooking something.

1. I'd bike without socks. Yes, you're right, it'll be easier to put them on in T2. There's also nothing worse than running in wet socks. Yuck.

2. Yes, do stuff while you're running. You'll save yourself a lot of time. I usually do things in this order -

  1. Put goggles on forehead (so I can see while running). This usually happens as soon as I stand up in the water.
  2. Unzip wet suit, remove arms.
  3. Take off goggles and swim cap.

When I reach transition, I drop the goggles and swim cap onto my area at the same time I'm pulling my wetsuit down. Helmet goes on next, followed by shoes.  (That gives me maximum time to de-dizzify before I have to lean over to get shoes strapped.)

I tend to have fairly fast transitions, but have never been formally schooled. So, take it for what it's worth.

x2 what Deanna said, on both.  I bike without socks now, and it's way easier.  As far as doing stuff on the run (or trudge) up to transition, I'm generally goggles up (on forehead) and I start unzipping as soon as I'm standing up in the water.
