Had an ok race today at my 40K TT.  Mentally I wanted to push, I wanted to suffer, but my legs just wouldn't respond.  Didn't have that extra gear, and likely still not 100% recovered from my HIM last week.  I could tell by Friday that I wouldn't be 100%, but I tried to ignore it to stay positive.

Fell 31 seconds short of cracking an hour, 1:00:30, in some pretty windy conditions.  Winner rode an amazing 53:46.

From a wattage perspective, still held 253 watts...but I was shooting for 260.

dood that is an awesome time!!!  Congrats!!

Not many folks can put up a 1 hour 40k; Far fewer only a week out from a tough HIM. That is a smokin' time, Jason - congratulations!

TSimone - 2012-06-11 5:09 AM Word on the street is someone in this mentor group bagged 1st in his class this weekend!  Anyone care to fess up?

It is all over the internet and it is front-page BT news! If my internet sleuthing is correct however we might have yet ANOTHER podium finisher in the group... congratulations all around on a great weekend of racing for the group, even if you don't fess up!

Hey Team:

I had a pretty good day yesterday considering the hot conditions and managed to get 3rd AG.  I had a very good conservative swim and came out in about 33 minutes.  A very uneventful swim and really enjoyed it...which is odd .

The bike course was pretty flat except for a pretty good 4 mile climb.   A little bit of wind on the return portion and could feel the heat starting to push in.  I really stayed conservative on the second half of the bike knowing that it was going to be a hot run and I was going to reel people in..which I did.  Biked a 2:39.

The run I came out of TA feeling great and starting running sub 7s...oops!  I could sustain that if it was 60 and cloudy but not today and by the second loop it really got hot.  I stayed on top of hydration but my legs were getting banged up.  I took a couple walk breaks which helped.  1:41.  Ran my way up to 3rd AG and 27th OA.  434 were registered I think.

Really had alot of fun out there.  The Grand Rapids Triathlon is a great race if you are ever in this neck of the woods.  I think I paid $150 for the half.

Thanks for all the support from this group along the way!

Awesome job, Ryan - and x2 on Tom's observation about smart racing. A 1:41 open HM is something to get excited about; 1:41 in a HIM is proof positive of perfect bike pacing. You had to really enjoy running folks down and onto the podium - that is the right way to run a race!

Congrats Ryan!!!

The OA winner was rocking an Eleonore Rocks hat at the awards ceremony.  Jarod is his name - went 4:09.  Had what seemed like a 5 mile lead on the bike at the turnaround - just flying.

Thanks!  It definitely feels good as the conditions were almost identical.  I learned a hard lesson 2 years ago.

Jason - soooo close!  That really is a fantastic time, and as Rusty pointed out, coming off a tough HIM a week earlier makes it that much better.

Ryan - awesome job on getting the podium.  Sounds like you executed to perfection.

Forgot to mention that I met a guy yesterday (can't remember his name) that participated in one of the very first Ironmans...when it was still on Oahu.  I think it was 1978 or 1979.  There were only 16 competitors, and entry was $35.  And you got all the beer and pizza you could eat at the finish.  He's gone on to do many more races, including Kona 8x and Canada 16x.

Hey Fred, nice to hear from you.  I'm sorry your season hasn't panned out they way you expected it to, but it seems that you've come to peace with it, which must be a bit relieving.

My tri season is basically over now.  I'm switching my last tri to a relay, which will give me another pseudo shot to crack an hour at 40k.  And since we'll have a strong swimmer and runner, we're shooting for the relay OA win, as well as the mixed team win.

So it's going to be a bike focus summer for me.  I'll run and swim when I feel like it...which probably will be not much at.  Looking to do 4 road races this summer, then a definate off season.

Been trying to get on the clyde podium at Redondo Tri, my first ever tri, over 5 races (raced 5, volunteered 3).  This year, my last as a clyde, won the clydes by about 5 minutes     And had a 7:XX run split - first ever split starting with a 7.   And had I raced 45-49, would have been on the podium in third.  That's probably the coolest thing to me, as that was always beyond me......  Next year, maybe (depends on who shows up)

Now, just saw a video of the race and I need some SERIOUS gait analysis.  My upper body is all scrunched up....

Not sore at all after the race (shoulda gone harder?).  Missed the long run so ran 8 this morning, swam 4K tonight.

Fred:  Sorry to hear about the season but sounds like you have the right attitued.  Get healed up...look forward to you racing healthy!

Chris:  Congrats on the podium this weekend...well done!

I really was not too banged up physically from the race.  Some soreness in the quads and traps but that is pretty much gone now.  Planning to take this week very easy anyway and figure out my plan for the rest of the season.  I just love the HIM distance so I want to do another here in August that is very close to home with a couple Olympics sprinkled in.

Happy with the race this weekend but still a little irked why my bike time was so slow.  I think I paced it correctly just wanted a faster time ha.  I have alot of time to gain in that discipline.  I feel like my run is in good shape to go fast.  I am going to continue to hammer away at the bike in training!

Fred - glad to see you drop in.  Sorry about the season, hopefully you are on the road to recovery for next year.

Chris - fantastic job on the win at your race.  Victory is always sweet!

As for me, I'm continuing to spend lots of time in the pool, averaging 4-5 days a week, but I need to find some time to get in for at least an hour or more as I'm restricted to 40min with my current schedule.  Starting to see my times drop a bit, and I was swimming 100's on a 1:32 pace today, and I'm really looking to see what it's going to take to put those numbers into the 1:2x's on a consistent basis.

Hope everyone is having a good week so far.

Got in the pool for the first time since Honu almost 2 weeks ago.  For a little while, I had a "clicking" moment where things felt really smooth and easy.  Hmm...too bad I won't be swimming much this summer.

Going out for some hill climbs after work.  Should be fun.

Have not been hitting it hard this week - recovery week+my birthday=me slacking off.

I am, however, racing this weekend! My first tri since last July - in for an olympic distance.  Weather is looking sketchy right now - hot and rainy .... but i am still looking forward to it.  Should be fun!

I don't really have any goals except to not panic during the swim which is entirely possible.  Just want to check with where i am at fitness-wise in a race setting.

Figured out my summer race schedule

July 14th - 35 mile road race

July 29th - 40k bike portion of a tri relay (my second chance at breaking an hour, but on a much tougher course)

August 5th - 60 mile road race

August 25th - 36 mile road race (climbing up Haleakala)

September 2nd - 112 mile road race
