Any Manatees have experience running in downtown Nashville? I will need to run in the morning, maybe before sunrise; is that safe? For swimming, looks like there is a sportplex that I may be able to swim at; anyone ever swum there? Thanks! |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed A few folks have asked so here's my latest Achilles/running update. Today I saw the sports doc for what I think is the final time. I'm still going to keep using the nitroglycerin patches for 2 more months. He recommended 2 more weeks of Alter G running, moving up to 30 minutes (intervals) 3x/week and gradually adding more of my weight back on. I've currently been running at 65% body weight. Next week I'm to do 75%, then the next week try 85-90%. The week after that (drum roll, please) I get to run outside a little bit! 15 minutes 2x week, then the next week 20 minutes 2x week. Week 5 is totally confusing so I'll not describe that, but week 6 I can do 15 minutes 2x then a 40 minute run at the end of the week! Keep your fingers crossed, I'm cautiously optimistic and excited! Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed Ok Manatees I need some advice again please. K is scheduled to have surgery in 12 weeks time. The Dr has very very strongly suggested that she lose at least 10kg (22lb) between now and then. Something which I think is doable for her as she is probably about 45kg overweight at present. I really want to support her in this and I need to lose about 10kg too so I suggested to her that we tackle it together. We are currently training for our first marathon so running on average 5 times a week (doing around 42k at present) its slow but we are doing it. Step one for both of us is a major tidy up of our diets cause we both eat a lot of crap. But I'm also thinking that we would both benefit from some type of strength training, not necessarily weights but body weight type exercises. This is new for me so I would love to know your thoughts and hear any suggestions that you might have. |

Club 16 is a local fitness club owned by a beloved retired hockey player. It has 4 body weight exercises that might be good (personally, I don't go as low as they show on the squats cause my knees hurt). You can always google videos of proper form. I also like doing steps ups onto a low stool or step. Good on you for being such a good friend! |

Women really need it to help keep their bones strong, especially as we age. K sounds like she's carrying around enough weight that her bones are already being tested, but it is still a good idea. In addition, I believe strength training has many other benefits including helping to burn more fat, so it is a great addition to your weight loss plan. If you don't have time to get to the gym or don't want to use weights, then body weight exercises are a good substitute. I didn't click on the link Kirsten copied, but if TRX type workouts are not mentioned therein, you may want to take a look at them too. You don't need to get the TRX brand itself - there are much cheaper options, but those type of exercises are great workouts and the straps are easy to bring with you, so you can workout even on vacation |

I find strength training the most effective thing for me in weight loss. I have to do a little more ST than cardio to get the benefits of both. ST will help with body comp changes in ways that cardio alone will not bring. Depending on what you have available you could do some body weight exercises or use light weights high reps. If you don't have weights & don't want to spend $$ use cans of food ...or milk jugs filled with water. LOTS of great videos out there, Youtube may have some. I use Beachbody on demand but that costs about 100 (USD) a year. |

Body weight exercises sound like a good plan and good on you for continuing to help K with her fitness and weight goals. Keep in mind that if she's already carrying extra weight, some body weight exercises such as planks might be easier for her to execute in a modified manner, such as on elbows instead of hands or on her knees instead of toes. Squats and step-ups as others mentioned sound good. Mountain climbers, burpees (evil!), walking lunges, wall sits, push-ups (again, modify if needed), Supermans and variations of it, donkey kicks are all good. Core stuff, too, like bicycle crunches or Russian twists with a medicine ball or weight are some of my faves. Shoulder bridges, too, maybe. I pulled my favorites out of this article http://greatist.com/fitness/50-bodyweight-exercises-you-can-do-anywhere Best of luck to you both! |

When I need to lose, I find the best results for me happen when I am adjusting the diet. Easy to say, but not so easy for me to do. I think I read somewhere that you can't out exercise a bad diet, and is that ever true for me. Good luck!!! |

I think I read somewhere that you can't out exercise a bad diet, and is that ever true for me. Good luck!!! I definitely agree with this. I read somewhere that fitness is 70% diet and 30% working out. Personally I drink 10% of what I used to (alcohol) and eat a lot less fried food/crap and I'm down about 40lbs from my peak and feel great. Of course I indulge but a lot of my old aches and pains are gone and eating healthier has somehow become the norm for me. From someone who used to tackle a KFC Mega Meal at least once a month, this is a big change but I'm glad I made it. As for working out, I'm all about the body weight workout. Pushups, lunges, squats, pullups, dips. You can get a kickass workout without lifting a single weight. |

I think I read somewhere that you can't out exercise a bad diet, and is that ever true for me. Good luck!!! Glad someone else said this too. Diet drives the weight loss more so than the exercise does. Match the diet to your activity level. The various fitness activities & exercises are for your health and interests with diet adjusting to compensate. Fitness places love to tout better calorie burning exercises & workouts and while not untrue, a single serving of a snack or recovery food can easily outpace the additional burn-off. It doesn't even have to be a terribly unhealthy one to do that. Keep thinking sustainable or longer term with the diet too. Continued lifestyle habits. It's not necessary to be perfect, just pretty well. And understanding what pretty well is. I've tended to well with cutting out a lot of middling stuff, so most of what's eaten is pretty good. Can pack a lot of nutrition for the calories it has plus trying to have some things that have higher satiety (that fullness feeling). That drives down the hunger feeling for longer periods even though some of the best foods for that can be more calorie intensive. |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed The term "strength training" has become so ambiguous nowadays that it's next to useless on its own for trying to describe what you want to do. For just being able to s/b/r, it's pretty low in what how much to do to help out. Mostly it's making sure some basic movements can be done ok, not about maxing out the amount lifted. Once you can perform it well there really isn't much additional value being able to do or lift more. It was nice to see Gerlach bring that up in a main forum thread on this. Squats were the main emphasis there, and being able to perform that correctly is one to keep on eye on. I forget a few others that are generally good too. For other health reasons or goals, it really depends on where you want to go with it and your specific condition at the time. Individuals will be all over the place on this on both accounts, hence having a confusing array of things to pick from. Wanting to do refrigerator tossing/carry is going to be somewhat different from combating age related losses. Exploring things to see what it gets you is fine too. |

I can not disagree with any of this, however, do not underestimate the value of eating right (says the guy that eats ALL wrong). You mentioned Step One above. When I need to lose, I find the best results for me happen when I am adjusting the diet. Easy to say, but not so easy for me to do. I think I read somewhere that you can't out exercise a bad diet, and is that ever true for me. Good luck!!! I agree that any good weight loss plan starts with the diet! I find that I need to use the myfitnesspal app to track my food to make sure I'm not taking in more calories than I think! It seems I (everyone?) always under estimate calories consumed and over estimate calories expended, so entering each meal/snack really helps keep me honest. i also find it helpful to use on of those calculators that tell you how many calories you need to consume -based upon your activity level and current weight - to lose x amount of weight per week. |

Body weight exercises sound like a good plan and good on you for continuing to help K with her fitness and weight goals. I use BT when I am being careful for this. It isn't too accurate, but it keeps me honest. I'm beginning to sense a theme resonating for me as well |

93 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed Hello Manatees, I have been lurking trying to keep up on what is going on with everyone, but decided to come out of posting hiatus. 2 years ago, I decided I needed to take off 10 or 12 pounds and I used an android app called Value Diary. I think it is based off the weight watchers plan. I ended up losing about 30 pounds, and felt great. By January of this year I had gained all but about 5 pounds of that back, between eating way too many sweets, injuries, and My first child (yes I am using this excuse as a man). I realized when I was carrying my son around who was about 15lbs that he gets heavy and wears me out. That made me think about the extra weight I am carrying around. I have started eating better and have lost about 6 lbs so far, but I would like to lose another 10. Good luck, it can be tough, but that makes it rewarding!! |
