axteraa - 2012-09-07 7:25 AM I went for a 9.5k run after work yesterday.  Longest run post IM so far but it was a disaster.  Let's just say I had to make a detour into the woods and I was within sight of my house....

Arend, you should be doing the really, really short runs at this stage. 9.5km sounds long for the recovery phase you and I are in.

So, I take it you think a 1k/40k/10k duathlon next weekend would be a bad idea?  Sealed

TSimone - 2012-09-06 9:42 PM Very nice Neil. When do you depart?

Supposed to get up to the inlaws tonight, which is half way between home and the race.  Then tomorrow morning we'll leave early and get to the race site for around 10am.

How about you?

Heading up tomorrow morning. It's only 2 hours away. Wanted to wish you luck before you took off, so good luck and kill it!

You Too!

New question.  Looks like it's going to dump buckets of rain on Saturday, and I'm thinking about my bike sitting on a rack all day getting soaked.

What are the best things I can do for the bike since the Athlete Guide says you can't put a full bike cover over it?  I obviously want to keep the chain and gears as dry as possible, and I'm thinking about the cockpit as well.  Actually I probably want to keep the PT dry also...

Thoughts?

Don't worry about it. The stuff is all waterproof. A good wipe and lube of the chain race morning and a good clean and lube after the race.

If it rained buckets during the race you wouldn't be able to do anything about it.

Yeah, I know that now - lower leg muscles are not happy today.  I'll go back to the 5k runs I was doing.

funny you should be discussing this because I am looking at the month and thinking i am pretty stupid - i guess we can attribute it to Ironman brain. But I have 25k trail run at the end of this month. Planning to keep it all easy but I really wish I hadn't committed to it now. It will be fine but as you mention, I should not be logging long mileage.

Planning to run 8k (5 miles) tonight.

Quick question.  If the heart is not in this one, why are you choosing to do it since you hadn't really planned on it in advance?

Yeah this group has some great knowledge for sure. I tried a really interesting thing in the pool based on a tip from an ST video on YouTube. Was definitely swimming faster with it. Involved contracting the glutes and hamstrings more to bring the center of buoyancy more forward. The video is pretty goofy, but seems like a good tip.

Here is the link, don't laugh too much at the goofiness....

That's a pretty good video. Since I have only a sprint race left at the end of the month, I think I know what I'll be practicing in the pool for the next couple of weeks (and probably most of the winter break!)
I gave some of the things in the video a try in the pool last night and I found it really difficult to go slow enough to stick to my T-Pace, kept ending up as much as 3secs too fast!

TSimone - 2012-09-07 6:04 AM I suspect some you have already done so, but if not check out Bryan's training log pic of the bike he's using in Kona.

What's interesting is that he thinks the frame may save him 5 minutes over an IM.  And judging by his training speeds at 200-210 watts...it's hard to doubt it.

. I was actually surprised that his watts were that low for the speed he did those rides at. Must be very aero or his PM reads low?

Curious what you guys think of him starting to use power this late in the game?  Given that he is so in tune with his HR and is used to it, should he even be experimenting with it?  Is he planning on using it for the race in Kona or is he just playing with it?

Thought the same thing.  Based on the pic I figured it was a Quark?  But those watts really do seem super low for someone generating that much speed.

It also shows how out of whack my PT must be because his watts are below mine - and I'm no Bryan on the bike (or run, or swim, oh hell, even transitions)...  PT goes back to Cycleops as soon as the race is over.

. X2. This is the time of year to be smart Marc. Us old folks have to tend to their bodies very carefully. Don't want an injury pushing into our IMMT 70.3 race next year....

I will be careful. If I come off the bike with any pain I will stop. I ran this morning and it was so/so. Felt fine after but hurts now.

I'm doing it for a few reasons. It's paid for anyways and I registered my son as a volunteer and he really wants to do that. His mom is away so it's kind of father/son weekend.

Things may be just fine, but I don't have any expectations so I won't be disappointed.

I will try a few things on the nutrition front.

Worst case I'll do a nice bike ride. Best case I'll finish. Either case it will be fun.

Has anyone here used trainerroad?

Weekday darkness is likely going to have me on the trainer twice a week.  I have my powertap, but I'm wondering if the variety of workouts available are worth the $10 a month.  For a while I was trying to upload workouts into my garmin 500, but that was a pain in the butt.  I hear Jorge's workouts are on TR now.  I also wouldn't mind seeing my workout stats on my laptop.

Will the ANT+ stick I have for my Garmin 405 work in transmitting from my PT to my laptop?

Thoughts?

Okay, I'm just going to put this out there, and debated about actually do so, but here goes.

My goal time for this race is 5:15.  :37 for the swim, 2:55 bike (long bike), 1:38 run + transitions.  2009 = 5:56, 2011 = 5:52.

I think I have it in me, but prior race results say otherwise.  We'll see come Sunday.

I won't have internet access for the next couple of days, so I'm sort of posting this and running off, but wanted to put it out to the group exactly what I wanted to accomplish.
