Thanks for the feedback on the CW-X stuff everyone. The more I look at them the more I want a pair for me, but that will need to wait.

I now have another question for you. All this talk about coaching not working for people has got me thinking about things that are working for me. One of them is my "Bowen" lady. I really like her and what she does works but the side effects just aren't working for me. After I see her there is normally a period of between 3 days to 3 weeks where I can't swim, bike or run, which just isn't cutting it.

Due to my clumsiness (I have a habit of tripping over or being tripped over by our dogs) and a couple of back issues as a teenager not seeing anyone isn't really an option. So my question is what kind of therapist do you all use?
A chiro, a physio or someone else and how did you find them?

I use a chiro as needed and I hate to admit this but the "reflexology" massage at the mall ha ha. I have used several chiropractor's over the years and if you get a good one it's worth it, If you get a bad one it is horrible and expensive. So, do your research. I had 2 neck injuries wrestling in high school and then I was rear ended by a drunk when I was 19 (the worst part for me is I was driving a 1968 Mustang I restored and he totaled the car, then took off). The chiro kept me out of a neck brace all three times. As for cheap massage, I love it, it only takes 20 minutes, sometime it does more than the chiro and I'm cheap ha he.

Stacey, I kind of have the same experience. My chiro is in the shopping center that I used to work in. He opens on Sunday mornings for walkin appointments and I only use him when I need to. Massage is currently done by a friend of DD2, but I am not impressed with him. Previously I had a good one, but she now works in a completely different field. The search on that front continues.  TW uses the lady at the mall and LOVES her.  I'll wait until others chime in as well, but I may have more to say later.

I use a massage therapist. None of that namby pamby spa stuff ?? It's deep tissue sports massage and it hurts so good! I found her because she runs the run program I'm with and she's a friend. she also has a master's in exercise physiology, so she understands the mechanisms underlying running (and other physical activity) and knows what is needed to treat you.

I have a chiro that I see once a month for maintenance. He's a local triathlete (and I got him started on trail running )  When I first went to see him I had issues (IT Band) so I saw him a couple times a week, then once a week, now just once a month for maintenance. If I have a specific niggle when I go in he'll do an adjustment and sometimes ART if he thinks that will help like for IT Band or a complainy knee.

Coach Scott has a sports massage guy that I need to check out. I just haven't gotten around to it (Grandma used to have a "round tuit" on her fridge) yet.

ETA: forgot to mention I've also been to myotherapy, which is basically expensive, centralized deep tissue massage. Very effective but too expensive to use regularly like you would massage.

Ditto. Deep tissue sports massage. Definitely not the spa kind--sometimes after a session, my stomach muscles hurt from trying not to scream! But it has cured me of most issues. I have had several experiences with chiro and only one was remotely positive. Many just seem very out of touch with the needs of athletes. The last one I tried didn't even take the time to ask me the history of the problem and what kind of activities I did. I have pretty much given up on that field. I'm sure there are some good ones out there, but I haven't had much luck.

The sports massage guy I see in my hometown is a former competitive cyclist who is still an avid biker, and he works on many of the elite athletes in town, as well as weekend warriors and people like me. His wife was on our (now defunct) tri club and also master's swimming, and one time he was giving free "sample" massages after swimming, which was how I found him--in ten minutes, he did more for a chronic hamstring/piriformis issue that anyone had been able to do over the past decade! I promptly made an appointment for more torture. Also had a "good" experience with deep tissue in college--a woman who used to treat the East German Olympic team managed to get rid of PF which I had been suffering from for almost five years--in something ridiculous like 3 or 4 treatments!

Which reminds me that I should try to score an appointment ASAP. since we are in a lull between the NCAA meet and Olympic Trials. One disadvantage of living in the "Running Capital of the World"--there are lots of sore athletes around in need of treatment!

I use a massage therapist (MT) and a physical therapist (PT) that I see for maintenance.  I had a massage therapist that I love love loved but she moved away.  The one that I'm seeing now seems to be good but he's no Audra.   With both the MT and the PT, I see them as needed.  I do find that if I get a massage every 5-6 weeks, it is helpful.  The PT helps with lingering shoulder and hip issues but I am needing that less and less.

For those of you who raced last weekend and for the other racers doing Buffalo Springs, what did you do/are your plans for the week before the race? With the temperatures in TX being in the mid 90's, are you still running/biking outdoors? I'm still working on figuring out what kind of taper works best for me, normally I like to be outside as much as possible to simulate as close to race conditions as possible, but this heat is making it tough!

Yep, same for me!  I go see my friend Sue who's also a teammate & a really good triathlete.  She's great, though not quite as good as my all-time fave from Vancouver, Frank - but he wouldn't let me clone him & bring him to Chicago, so really - it's all his fault.

Now that a few others have chimed in, I do want to say this. When I first started getting massages, I was way too vague on what I wanted. The same with the chiro. Now I am very specific and have a better experience. If I tell them what I need and they do something else, I'll let them know. And I probably won't be back. I've been through 5 or 6 MT's. My chiro listens and goes from there very well.

So even after you find one, make sure that there is as much talking and listening going on as possible. Good Luck.

Don't have much to add to the MT/PT thing.  Had a great one back East.  Have a decent one here - she's not as up on s/b/r but sure knows how to find whatever is knotted up and blast it apart!

Not sure its made a difference in keeping injuries at bay, but feels better when I'm going once or twice a month.  Only went to a chiro once, a couple decades ago, so have no insight there.

Been crazy here last week and this.  Why is it that to go on vacation for one week, you have to do two weeks of work the week prior and two weeks of work the week you get back?!?  Can't wait for the vacay...

I've actually been avoiding running outside as much as possible. Since I'm focusing on the bike I don't want to add any undue stress to my body, so lots of treadmill runs in the A/C. I'm actually not that worried about the heat in Lubbock because it's so much drier than it is here. And the run is supposed to be lots of shade. I wouldn't worry about doing anything specific to prepare for it.

As far as that week, for the bike I'll do one last hard vo2 interval session on Tuesday, then an hour of sweet spot intervals on Thursday. A few short runs at race pace. 30 minutes of openers on the bike Saturday and call it good. Oh, plus a couple of short swims in there somewhere, but I've completely let my swimming drop off the map so I'm not expecting great things with that leg in the race.

Yeah, saw a smoking deal (like ridiculous) on an unpainted Dimond frame on slowtwitch. Quickly figured out it was perfect for my fit. Bam! Of course now I've got to get it painted and build it up which I'm sure will cost more than the frame did. But I couldn't pass that up!!

And I'm definitely going to need manatee help on deciding how to paint this thing!!!

In Chicago it is usually super hot and super humid. Not 90+ hot, rather 80+, but with the humidity it gets really bleh... I read few of Ironman race reports of the other member here, Kim, and she was always drinking Pedialyte for a week before her IM race. I am not sure how much it really helps, but I have a huge problem drinking water, so before every race I drink electrolyte stuff for a whole week (I prefer the ones for infants, because they have less sugar, and less weird stuff).
As for running outside, I try to run and ride in any condition, because I just never know what the race day may look like. And since I am not experienced, I want to be prepared. If It's really nasty, I make sure I drink enough before and after (during depends how long the run is), and I am on much slower pace.
WHat distance are you doing? If you can remind me

So exciting! I have no idea about the half the stuff you said there, but I am always excited for good deals within triathlon community I know nothing about painting and frames, but definitely take before and after pictures!

Exact opposite here. I go for mamby pamby. Although not from a spa, I am all about the Thai or Chinese massages here in our International District. I go for relaxation which is s totally different scope.

Other than the actual tapering of load, specificity is my main goal when tapering from conditions to terrain and equipment. Of course you can only get so close, right? Example was pikes peak ascent. There is no way I could do a bunch of workouts simulating 14,000+ altitude in Seattle.

I'm assuming there is a story there...

WOOT WOOT WOOT!!

Remember, pics or it didn't happen (wrt the paint scheme).

Psyched for you!  I love that new (to you) bike smell...

Coming off of a tibial stress fracture in 2000, stevebradley made his way into triathlon. Now he has over 60 triathlons completed and is one of the most active mentor groups on BT.

Not only is he a great athlete, he is a great mentor. I have been in his mentor group for the last two rounds and he inspires and encourages our entire group daily.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
