That looks awesome!!

You know you want to participate

Stop tempting meeeee!

I will make sure there is a bottle or 2 of wine at the finish line with your name on it

On the other hand, it's a week after IM Choo....

Or a month... HHH is August 23rd & Choo is September 28th.

Oh jeez.  I even looked it up and everything.  Evidently, I'm chronologically challenged as well as 80's TV trivia-, World Cup score-, and bike rules-challenged.  Honest, I do know something about something!!!

Well you really only missed the spelling of Knightrider as far as the trivia goes. The rest was just wtf towards your sense of similarity in styling.

And because it's been too long without referencing AD somehow, nearly had GOB Bluth as the new voice of KITT, but Will Arnett was voicing for GM commercials. Instead they went with Val Kilmer. No idea if that would have worked, but the thought is hilarious.

Well, an indirect reference, or rather a reference without mentioning it was being referenced, in true AD style = the ostrich pictures...

It would've been impossible to watch the new Knight Rider without laughing.  Heck, I can't even hear 'The Final Countdown' without picturing Gob with doves and fire.

Okay, I'm going to confess my ignorance.  (At least I'm not demonstrating it this time! )  Anyway, I have no idea what you people are talking about.  AD?  Gob Bluth?  Doves and fire?  At least I know what "The Final Countdown" is...

AD = Arrested Development, a TV show about the ficticious Bluth family that originally aired on Fox from 2003-2006 and they recently (2013) released a Netflix-only 4th season.  IMO, it was one of the most clever TV shows out there and never failed to make me laugh like a complete fool, and still does, watching the shows again.  Salty, Ben and I are for sure devotees of the show, although I think there are some other manatees who are fans.  Gob Bluth is one of the family members who fancies himself a great magician but is pretty terrible, often killing the doves/animals used for his tricks and totally bumbling his acts.  Wait, that sounds awful but it's actually funny because we know no animals were harmed in the filming of the show...

Edited to add: they would play "The Final Countdown" whenever he would do his act.

Many thanks for the explanation.  And for giving me a theme song for the afternoon.  Can't get that blasted song out of my head now!!!

I feel kind of dumb asking this question but I don't want to be a PITA at the LBS where I bought my new (to me) bike.  I took her out for a spin yesterday and she's acting like her rear derailleur is out of adjustment (skipping gears, not shifting cleanly, etc.).  I know that it's possible for a rear derailleur to get knocked out of alignment, but could that happen just from being with another bike on the car's rear-mounted bike rack?  Seems kind of far-fetched to me but thought I'd ask for some perspective from the Pod before I went back to the shop and asked them to take another look.

If the bikes are swinging or were bumped when putting them on, then it could happen.

And Gob isn't not actually his name, but an abbreviation for George Oscar Bluth. It's pronounced more like jobe but he's often introduced as gob.

I still can't get over how well this mashup of AD & GOT works.

I am BAAAAAAAAAAACKKKKKKKKKK! I finally have home internet again! And my training has been non-existent....well.....not really, it just doesn't happen as often as it should, and is painful. In any case, I am starting a clean eating/fitness challenge as of the 6th, and I have told the husband all about it, so I will be kept on track.

I plan on doing the Davis Moonlight 1/2 Marathon in 2 weeks....with just about the same amount of training in it that I had last year! Lets see if I can beat last year's time eh?

No word from NC yet regarding my future job (I HOPE I HOPE I HOPE!!!), but they just closed it today, so now its time to wait....I have also put in an app at St. Louis Zoo for a Hellbender keeper position (The US's largest Salamander species)--not really a step up, but I really like Hellbenders, and St. Louis Zoo is the highest paying zoo in the country...

Anyway, I hope to check in more regularly now.

See ya all!

It will be interesting to see if all this soccer furor is a world cup only thing or if people will actually have an interest beyond it.  I'm guessing it is a world cup thing only.

We'll see over the next few years.  I think it will depend on the "young" folks coming up now, as soccer has been the most popular participatory sport in the US for some years now (decade or more?).  When those folks are old enough to control the remote at home, we'll know.  As long as people over about 20 are running the clicker at night, it'll still be football, baseball, hockey and those other sports.    It's the add revenue attached to televised sports that drives it all...

Just my opinion, 'course.

Matt

I think that it has really helped that this year's World Cup is in a US-friendly time zone.  I know that when I went grocery shopping/errand running last week, people were talking about it everywhere.

Having the times be US friendly really does help.  I've been able to squeeze in a number of games.  It doesn't hurt that there have been a lot of exciting games, big upsets, and the US team making it out of the group stage.

Thanks.  We've used the rack lots of times before without any problems and she's only been on the rack twice, once for the short jaunt home from the shop.  She actually gave me some problems the first time I rode her (just on the trainer), but I thought that was just me needing to get used to her.  I think I'll take her back and give them a bit of an out by saying I might have messed it up somehow.  I'm thinking they'll make it right, but I'm willing to pay for a tune-up if need be (although I'd really rather not).  There are a couple other things that need to be done that I thought would be (like installing the bike computer), so I think I'll give them another shot.  Plus that gives me an excuse to pick up some more yummy chocolate!!

Soccer has become fairly popular in Australia over the last 4 or so years. Not so much on TV but more with kids playing it. I think this has a lot to do with the injury risk being significantly lower than Australian Rules Football (think the physicality of USA football but with out the padding and helmets) and parents' desire to wrap their kids in cotton wool and not let them do anything that might somehow have a risk associated with it.

Yay!!  Nice to have you back on a more regular basis.  Keeping my fingers crossed for you on the NC and St. Louis gigs.  And good for you for starting the fitness/clean eating regimen, along with tackling a HM with minimal training.  I'm in awe!  Keep us posted on how things are going, okay?

I binge watched the first 3 seasons on DVD borrowed from a friend and it took a little while to get into it but then I couldn't stop watching (and laughing). I'm in the middle of the 4th season now - I don't love it as much but I hear it gets better towards the end.......we shall see!!

I predict that this is a World Cup thing. We have seen this same discussion over the past 30-40 years. Remember the NASL from the 70's? Have you heard of the current USL Pro league? Or the current NASL? Of course not, and that's my point. Here in America we play football with our hands and feet.  We won't change, and if you think I'm wrong, see the metric system as a point of reference.

Having said that, I did get the opportunity to teach TW about offsides and a few other soccer specific things while Algeria was making Germans the world over sweat like crazy. So bummed they couldn't beat them.

I binge watched the first 3 seasons on DVD borrowed from a friend and it took a little while to get into it but then I couldn't stop watching (and laughing). I'm in the middle of the 4th season now - I don't love it as much but I hear it gets better towards the end.......we shall see!! oh and Mary when you bring the bike to the shop, what you say is you were "JRA" - just riding along - and it started skipping No need to give them an explanation!

Gosh it makes me so happy that education of the truly important things in life is still continuing in here.

I'm so fortunate and grateful for the invaluable information I get from my fellow Manatees.  How could I have ever been a successful triathlete without knowing this?!

Season 3, Ep 4 - Notapusy, Michael and Steve train for a triathlon, so this is all entirely relevant.

I was thinking about going out to masters tonight for a swim, buuuuut, the US world cup game is on!  I think I'm going to have to wait on that swim!

It will be interesting to see if all this soccer furor is a world cup only thing or if people will actually have an interest beyond it.  I'm guessing it is a world cup thing only.

I think we are a long way past the days of the NASL, and yes, I've heard of them.  MLS has a higher average attendance now than the NHL per game.  I think soccer is here to stay.  Of course, my main interest in the game resides on the European side of things, to be sure.  The English game is much more interesting than what's happening here, at the moment.

Though it has a long way to go for sure.

I learned in this race that in order to finish the swim, you have to know where you are going. And in order to know where you are going, you have to learn to sight.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
