Growing up in a competitive environment, the push to find out is strong. Think it's coming more too because I'm probably in the latest stages of where my peak performance would reach highest even though I could still do as good or better than where I'm at (and where I've been) for some years. No options stay at the front all the time, but do tend to keep up in the foreground.

Yeah, I totally understand. I have mentioned before that I am not all that competitive.  I want to push to be the best I can be but I guess my definition of that is a more well rounded athlete/person,  not just being the best I can be at one thing. I think if I were/when I get a little closer to a time that is not arbitrary I may shift to a little more specific focus. An example being if I get down to a 2:5x low marathon, training with my current focus and the B standard for the trials is the same.

The Uwharrie 50k might be the spring one.  Sorry!  On Friday  sent you a bunch of other ultras in the area in the October timeframe.  One is at the Whitewater Center, one is Pilot Mountain to Hanging Rock and there is one in Greenville, SC as well.  All are 3-4 hours from Charleston though.

Just be sure he goes to WA and run Cougar. That just sounds so much easier

That is so awesome! It made me smile to read the part about your mum being a pretty cool lady. Even though mine can drive me up the wall, I feel the same. She really is a pretty cool lady.

The medal hanger sounds like a very thoughtful gift and the CW-X tights will surely get plenty of use!  It is so very cool and fun that you are able to do races and events with you, love this!  (((hugs)))) keep on running, Stacey and Stacey's mom!

Excellent!  What a great guy, helping the lady in the swim, too.  You've raised some good boys!

What time frame are you looking for an east coast ultra, and are you still looking for one near CT or elsewhere?  I agree with Salty - just have him come to you!

Okay, the verdict is in...kind of. The Oly I want to do is Patriot's International in September. I will not be doing Nation's Tri. While most non-local people seem to consider it a bucket list race, every real local person I spoke to said it is logistically not worth it. Far better to get my monument majesty on in Marine Corps Marathon. However, I will only sign up for Patriot's if J gets a job offer soon. If not, pennies obviously must be pinched, and Reston Triathlon would be far cheaper.
Thanks so much everyone for weighing in!

There isn't much fun to a mind-numbing 3.3 mile loop course. However, it is what I have in the area and I may do the night 6 hour offering.

While a short loop can get a little tedious there is a benefit with your logistical support.  You do not have to carry near as much as you are never too far from an aid station or your own base.  I've done two 12 hour races that were both on a 2.5 mile loop.  It was actually kind of nice to set up a base with a cooler, extra gear, etc.  Mentally, it wasn't too bad and time actually passed pretty quickly.  Another benefit is that you are always near other runners and conversation is a great way to pass the time.

I totally understand the sentiment here and in fact have felt the same way (in terms of running in circles is not nearly as bad as you might think.) But I don wonder that this might not be ideal because of all the things you listed. It would depend on TJs goals of the tune-up but I tend to do them more to work out the logistical stuff (what to carry and what not to carry etc.)

Kind of a tangent here, but a guy on another forum I'm on does race walking. He's done a couple of 24hr "races" and broken 100miles. They're not allowed to run and are judged. For that reason and logistics like mentioned here, they do them on a track!!! I can't even imagine that.

At least they don't have to deal with any hills.

The loop I did my ultras on had about 200 feet of elevation on each lap.

My 50m is November 19 so I am looking for a 50k the weekends of the October 22nd or 29th. Really the only reason I thought of doing a DS2 locale race is to combine it with a trip to see him. He's in SE Georgia now but will, hopefully, be in Washington state by then.

When I get to my IM I'll be looking for one near him so that he can, hopefully, race it as well. As you can see from the pic he is in fine racing shape

In the past, my brother has had the fun conflict of endurance sports (tri really) and bodybuilding. He can move along, but did look rather beefy out with the others.

I had my first OWS of the year yesterday, so the pool is officially open! It took some time to find a place. I tried my house first, but the wind had changed and was pulling water in from the deep part of the lake. The water temp was 63 on Saturday and dropped to 50 yesterday. I moved into the bay and the first place I tried had breaking surf, I'm not ready for that challenge yet. Then I moved into a different part of the bay which is more protected. The water temp was a balmy 58, but at least there was no breaking surf.

Wow, that's cold!! The water temperature in the Atlantic for my tri on the 11th was about 82*.  That's the kind of temp I like

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
