Who else is racing in Lubbock this weekend in addition to me and Sean? I remember someone posting I just can't remember.

Originally posted by JBacarella I had my first OWS of the year yesterday, so the pool is officially open! It took some time to find a place. I tried my house first, but the wind had changed and was pulling water in from the deep part of the lake. The water temp was 63 on Saturday and dropped to 50 yesterday. I moved into the bay and the first place I tried had breaking surf, I'm not ready for that challenge yet. Then I moved into a different part of the bay which is more protected. The water temp was a balmy 58, but at least there was no breaking surf.

Wow, that's cold!! The water temperature in the Atlantic for my tri on the 11th was about 82*.  That's the kind of temp I like

DS2 was bummed that his swim at Amelia Island was too warm to be wetsuit legal last weekend. It was warm, but the waves were a problem.

Wow, that sounds mighty chilly. Enjoy the OWS! I'm still trying to find some places around here that don't make you pay a fortune just to swim for an hour.

There isn't much fun to a mind-numbing 3.3 mile loop course. However, it is what I have in the area and I may do the night 6 hour offering.

While a short loop can get a little tedious there is a benefit with your logistical support.  You do not have to carry near as much as you are never too far from an aid station or your own base.  I've done two 12 hour races that were both on a 2.5 mile loop.  It was actually kind of nice to set up a base with a cooler, extra gear, etc.  Mentally, it wasn't too bad and time actually passed pretty quickly.  Another benefit is that you are always near other runners and conversation is a great way to pass the time.

Kind of a tangent here, but a guy on another forum I'm on does race walking. He's done a couple of 24hr "races" and broken 100miles. They're not allowed to run and are judged. For that reason and logistics like mentioned here, they do them on a track!!! I can't even imagine that.

Wonder how that would look like on Strava. That will be one big fat red oval.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm amazed I haven't heard about that from the trail running community here!!!!!!! I was going to volunteer for that race but my Dad was in town! That is right up by the ultra that I volunteered for a few weeks ago! DANG!

I freekin' love her description of the event.

It always makes me sad when this kind of thing happens and they have to kill the bear. I know it is a lot more complicated but I feel that when we venture into the wild, we are acknowledging a certain amount of risk and playing by THEIR rules.

Yep, that's a bit chilly.  50 is needles in the face.  58 is tolerable but I'd get a little cold towards the end of a long swim.

The little lake I swim in is about 70 which is perfect for me.  My son has been going with me on his little sit-on kayak.  I'm thinking of getting a surfski for him that I could also use.  Has anyone ever ridden one of these?  They are very popular around here and I have several friends that race them.

Speaking of the Valle Caldera run and 100 miles on a track...

A local ultra runner who was at the Valle run, but did not see said bear, will be doing the Relay for Life this weekend, on a single member team. She hopes to break 100m in the 24 hour period.  I think I might go do a few miles with her Friday and/or Saturday morning.

So I just signed up to do the Tour of Utah Ultimate Challenge with a couple of my cycling club mates. We get to ride the stage 6 course early in the day before the pros do. We'll be there for 4 days so we'll also do some rides of our own. Can't wait. This is going to hurt though!!

We do some Kayak surfing. We use a mid-sized one with a skirt to play in the surf. I want to get a a whitewater kayak, when the weather starts to change in August we will get 8 ft surf, and I think it would be a blast.

The last downhill looks fun. The rest of the ride looks like life in the pain cave.

I'd take the 82 over the 50 degrees any day! That would be like knives. But, I am a cold water (cold anything, really) wuss.

What a neat experience that will be, getting to ride the same course as the pros just before they do, then hopefully getting to watch them race, too!  I'd be a fan of km 1-11 and 140-170

Have been out in smaller waves (4-6 ft max I think), but it was almost 20 years ago and in whitewater kayaks that were getting a little dated then. Where is Dave at for this one?

I live on a bay that is about 10 miles wide and when it storms the wind always comes out of the south from one end of the bay to the other.  When it is stormy (and we have some pretty nasty ones in the late Fall) my buddies will battle out against the wind and ride the wind driven waves back across the bay.  It is a wild ride.

okay, that's legit. Just make sure you have new brake pads, because I don't think they will be new when you are done.

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
