I know. We really need to close the town limits already. Too much traffic could make biking less fun! |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees 2015.3 CLOSED (or Poptarts? Pet pics?) Originally posted by Asalzwed Originally posted by brigby1 Originally posted by Asalzwed Yes! Such a good point. Sometimes I am just looking for a race somewhere but then realize that I can just go explore without it being a race, with my own two feet (or bike) or whatever and really make an adventure of it! I could see something really awesome coming from a ironman type skillset. Like, for example, swimming with one of those dry bags (with shoes and clothes) across a channel of water to an island then trail running/hiking up to the top of a peak or something, swimming back then biking to the local brewery. That does work. Slowtwitch has been putting up articles more recently on things like Otillo and similar which will have 4-5 different swim & run segments. While those are events, one could still get some ideas on how to get through such types of adventures. They carry everything with them and go to some very interesting locations. Those would definitely be more unique adventures, though I was thinking more single activity too. I've had little trouble getting used to hiking some very hilly terrain. Going off the beaten path might take a little getting used to, but very possible. Some hikes have had as much climbing in them as the Pikes Peak Ascent did. Could stay on the roads and ride your bike around everywhere too. Might have to check some gearing for really hilly terrain, but that shouldn't take much. Stop when you need or want to just look around. Mostly it's just the ability to be rather active for long periods of time. I plan to put together some sort of running hut to hut adventure at some point. Possibly an established route in Europe or one in Colorado. I know people may have a hard time understanding what kind of contest there is between Europe vs Colorado but ever since I was in Australia a long while back and was chatting with a local about how much the US has to offer, it has really made me want to capitalize on the diversity and convenience of domestic sight seeing. Yes, there is so much to see around here. I heard of hut to hut before, but didn't really look too much yet. Sounded like an interesting idea though. |

Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees 2015.3 CLOSED (or Poptarts? Pet pics?) Ok from you bike loving manatees I need some help. My new bike requires new pedals because my current ones are silver and there is no way that I can put them on my new bike that is black with black cranks. So I have shimano cleats on my shoes which work just fine for me. Bike weight really isn't an issue for me because I am currently 25lbs over weight I figure loosing that is going to have far more effect than saving a few grams in pedal weight. What should I know before I go looking for pedals? |

Apart from to save 77g in weight why would I buy the carbon ones? |

If you figure out the filters, it's possible to see this page which (hopefully) shows all the Shimano pedals that site has. There are 5 types of Shimano road pedals, indicated by the SPD-SL. And basically, the more you spend, the more performance the pedal gives. Though they are just pedals, so it's really not much. Differences would be lighter weight, strength, and better bearings. I hadn't looked into the 540 or 550 really, but wouldn't expect much of any noticeable difference between the 105, Ultegra and Dura Ace. Likely not much of anything with the first two either. Sales likes to drum these differences up as much more than than really are. Think my mountain bike pedals are the PD-520 or 540 and at 10 years old they are still doing just fine. I might have missed sarcasm last night as I was tired too. Edited by brigby1 2015-08-20 8:00 AM |

Very good article! I'm still not sure I'd have the cojones to run downhill fast with all the rocks, etc. that are on most of the trails around here (not to mention my bad knees), but there are some great uphill tips in there, too. Now that my 'major' races/travels are behind me I think I need to hit the trails more frequently. Trail running in LP reminded me how much I love it and miss it. I'll get the TechNu and bandages ready... |

Master 1970 Somewhere on the Tennessee River | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees 2015.3 CLOSED (or Poptarts? Pet pics?) Hi, everyone. It has been a while. I have mainly been swimming and biking. The doctor said I could start using the treadmill and walking. No running. I am working on repairing my gait. I am using vibrams as this seems to be helping restore strength in my feet. Along with normal swim training i have continue training for freediving. I am having a blast with it I achieved level one last week. That is a dive to 60 feet. Wasn't too hard. My static apnea (breath holding) time is up to 3 minutes. It freaks out some of the lifeguard at pool when I work on breath holding at the pool. Will continue with breathing exercises and hope to get to level two in a month or so. Got a couple of century rides coming up in a month. Life is good. Hope all is going well for everyone here. |
