My method is similar to Melanie's. There are certain races that I must do because of location or relation. There are 2 5K races one is put on by the local Kiwanis Club and my wife is a member (a little spousal pressure plus I've won age group in it or I am literally married to doing it). Another is a turkey trot put my daughter's cross country coach, and we have always done it. There is a HIM in our town that was my first tri (I did the sprint) and I act as the city's liaison for the race. It is the one race that trumps all other activities.
The rest are usually week of decisions or it sounds quirky or fun or I did it on a whim (my first marathon was that way, I was putting in the miles and thought what the hell).
I have friends who are more intense about their schedule, training, diet and planning. That intensity does not fit my place in life or view of the world.

Count me in this group as well. I have 3 or 4 that I do yearly. Others come and go. I did the Flatwoods 10 miler for 2 years, but it messed up my ankle. I like trail racing, but I'm not headed back there any time soon. SRQ Music HM started last year, so I've done both years of it. It came around at a good time, because the other local HM has gotten a bit too large.  I may not do a HM this coming winter, but there is a local 6 hour race that is 3 miles from my house. I guess this is all to say that my race picks may have a reason, but it sure isn't a scientific reason.

Think I've done more like this. Had a couple more priority races for the year. Could be travel races. Could be something local. Just ones i want to be more sure of doing and try doing well at. Then have a big pool of local races to jump into more last minute. See how things are going along the way. I just don't post any of the races until I actually do them.

My first 2 years have revolved around A races. I like it, but I think I'd like to enjoy more races.

After the IM I think I'm just going to get into a good, reasonable weekly training routine and then race whenever I want to for a while.

I have a quick bike question.
I was riding on my trainer today and I was in the small chain ring. I tried to get in back up to the big chain ring, but it wouldn't. Normally, to fix this, I can just shift into where the big ring should be and put my chain on the big ring manually. Today, while I was trying to do this, the chain got caught on the rear derailer ( I don't know how to spell) so it won't go anywhere if I try to pedal. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Ahhhh spring! Lovely photos!

For some reason Stevie goes out of her way to pee on crocuses. And she doesn't go out of her way to do much if it's not food related.

How often do you clean your bike? I've had that happen, and it was due to my front derailleur getting gunked up my a combo of sweat and Gatorade over time.

I generally note things throughout the year that I want to do the following year. Then I target A races, (this can be just one or several, depending on the type of race) then I fill in things from there.

However, I have been much less rigid as of late (much like the way it sounds Sean is headed.) Now more important than goal or A races, I just have goals. A block of different types of racing contributes to achieving those goals but is not necessarily the goal itself. I like this a lot better and I feel I have the flexibility to try more and different things. Also, success doesn't hinge on one day (that can be affected by a bajillion variables out of my control anyway.)

I've had my chain jam in my rear derailer (I think that is what you are describing). It is an easy fix. I had to back pedal for slack and pull the chain out. It looks worse than it is, but don't worry, you probably won't damage it.

Connor, can you grab a picture of it and post it here? It should come out with some back pedalling and effort. Pulling on it probably won't hurt it, but twisting may be a bad idea. Depending on where it is jammed, you may be able to get some leverage, but take care not to hurt something else.

Just saw the weather channel. Hoping the southern manatees aren't anywhere near the tornados. Stay safe, all.

Like Chris, wondering about a picture to see what's going on. Also wondering what "manually" means? What I've called manually before was reaching down and pushing directly on the derailleur with my finger. And that's because it was broken.

It sounds like he needs to adjust the outer limit of the derailluer further out if it's not pushing the chain up onto the big ring, but it is moving some as he can grab the chain and "put it on" the big ring.

As far as the chain being stuck in the rear one, never had that happen so can't help there.

Hopefully the FD is just that. Otherwise it will be repositioning the FD too. Not having it aligned well can make this fun.

Well I'm back in snowy Santa Fe after some warm, okay HOT, days in the Phoenix area. As Erin mentioned we missed each other, again

Ragnar was fun but it left me with an IT Band issue.  I haven't run since Saturday. I might give it a try this afternoon but it's still sore so I'm not getting my hopes up.

My RR is up if anyone is interested.

Hey guys...now that things have slowed down and I'm back in the racing world I would love to be active in the Mantee world once again. In keeping with the tradition of once a manatee always a manatee I will post my bio here to make it official . Better late than never

NAME: Jonathan

STORY: I was very overweight / obese a few years ago and always made excuses about my health. Finally I got into gear lost over 60 pounds and completed my first spirit Triathlon in Sept of 2012. Since then I've completed several springs, 4 x 70.3s, 1 olympic, and 1 full ironman. I love the sport and really enjoy giving back to the community. I am also the President of our local Triathlon club and the Race Director for the local Sprint Triathlon that our club puts on.

I joined the manatees back in 2012 when I was training for my first sprint try. This group was extremely helpful in teaching me how to swim. I actually took videos of myself and uploaded them here for Yanti and a few others to analyze and provide feedback. I could barely make it to the end of the pool and now I swim 3k+ swim sets at sub 1:40 pace so thru the encouragement of this group I have come a long way!

FAMILY STATUS: Married with 3 kids

CURRENT TRAINING: Currently I'm training aprox 10 hours per week in preparation for Galveston 70.3 and then that training will nearly double as I begin to prepare for Boulder 140.6

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: If any have been chosen or are on the possibilities list.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: I hope to become a faster and better balanced Triathlete this season.

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I hope to encourage others as I was encouraged as a newbie to the sport. I also get encouragement from all you guys

I just signed up for The Buffalo Springs 70.3 at the end of June! This is the 1st 2016 race I'm registered for and I'm very excited about it! Just wanted to share the with the group. If anyone's done this race before I'd love to get some feedback. This will be my 2nd HIM. My 1st was Austin in 2015. It took me 5:28 which I'm hoping to beat!

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
