So for nearly 20 years I have not read works of fiction, the reason being is that I used to become consumed by them to the point that nothing else mattered. When I went away for work nearly 4 weeks ago a friend who was not aware of this previous issue lent me a book. I thought whats the harm right, I'm a grown up and I like to think a fairly reasonable person so it wont be an issue. I can read a bit put the book down do the things that I need to do and be normal with the whole thing. Well it turns out not to be the case. In the past 3.5 weeks I have not exercised, hidden books in the office at home and secretly read them when supposedly doing other things, stayed up well past midnight reading most nights, and sat at my desk at work with my book hidden on my lap under my desk, reading instead of working. Tonight is bin night and the three 500+ page books that I brought and have read more than once over the last 3.5 weeks are going in the recycle bin (yes I have read them all multiple times in this 3.5 weeks). I am sure that people will think that I am being flippant about this but I'm not I am serious. I have to admit that this is an addiction that I can not control and it is negatively impacting my life and therefore I must stop it now while I still can. Thanks for being a group that I can admit this to without fearing your judgement (too much).

Wow, good on you for owning up to your issue and, IMO, more importantly, taking control back by getting rid of the books.  20 years of not reading is a heck of a lot of self-control!

It's official - she drank, no, CHUGGED the Kool-Aid!!

It's been fun watching you progress and will be fun continuing to see more growth.  Congrats to a great first season!

Mary, I'd say you've had nothing short of an incredibly awesome year of improvements, races, and getting to that glorious finish line.  Next year you're going to be stronger than ever and I can't wait to be here to see the results of all your hard work, determination, and perseverance.

I have to admit, when I first started reading this I thought you were joking, but I realized pretty soon that you weren't and this has been a real issue for you.  Addictions of any kind are serious matters and I'm glad to know that you have taken steps to get this one under control.  Good luck.

^^ What Hands said is soooo true.  Any addiction is very serious, and I'm glad you've recognized where you're at, and taking the matter as seriously as you need to.  No judgement here and huge {{{HUGS}}} to you!!

{{hugs}} fellow reader!

I read a lot (https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/2953856-janyne < don't look to hard, I'm reading cr*p now, not fine literature) but I don't think that I've quite crossed into addiction territory!

Originally posted by jbwills Looking for some swim advice. I am looking at doing 4 swims a week to help get my swimming back and increase my distance for B2B. Would 3 workouts a week of intervals and 1 workout of longer sets (200-800 meter sets) be ok or should I do all shorter ones? Although I was doing some dry land swimming stuff my chest, shoulders, pecs, all the swim muscles are sore and getting good workouts in. Looking for some good quick ways to help get my swim back for B2B. I have roughly 4 weeks before B2B half.

I was advised to do one short, one medium and one long.  The short/med/long refer to total distance of the set (keeping in mind 1.2 miles is roughly 2000).  Don't overdo it, better to be slightly under trained than injured!

Do get/borrow a wetsuit (required by RD)

Do practice in said wetsuit (not just the day before the race!)

Do get in open water a few times prior to the race if you can.

Do you know what wave you are in for the start?  Earlier waves will have some favorable current (http://www.tide-forecast.com/locations/Masonboro-Inlet-North-Carolina/tides/latest)

Welllllll, I suppose I should stop training if I am on the DL...  I dunno.  It is my bad knee, it's often sore.  I think I may have to not strength train next week and give it some time to settle down.  But S/B/R don't seem to bother it too much.

Looks like we have a moon howler, a monkey dodger, and a She-Rah-Rah racing.  Yup, the Manatees be representin'!  Have fun, racers!!

Janyne, I'm in awe that you can do your colorful Friday report one-handed.  And not even a single typo.  VERY impressive!  Hope your surgery goes off without a hitch tomorrow.  I'll be thinking about you.  (((Hugs)))

As for the rest of you DLers, please heal up soon and don't do stuff that makes you hurt (hear that, Kirsten?!).

I'm glad you recognize it as interfering and are taking steps to regain your life/time.

As a fellow lover of books, I'm curious why only fiction affects you like this...or is non-fiction just more of a controllable struggle?

I get lost in them and can read for hours and hours. It drives J crazy...especially late at night. When I was young, I'd hold my book up to read by read by the headlights of the cars behind us.

Yep, "C" is my choice too - unless you're planning on walking and/or being horribly uncomfortable, I'd avoid "A", and the group in "B" just don't have a whole lot of oomph to them.

Wow, good on you for owning up to your issue and, IMO, more importantly, taking control back by getting rid of the books.  20 years of not reading is a heck of a lot of self-control!

Good job on identifying and owning.  Healthy life habits are where we all want to end up.

Same event?

I think some were RnR San Diego and others RnR Vegas. Need am inspiration piece :-)

I can't imagine running in either outfit from the first picture, the outfits in the 2d picture look a little flappier than the last; so the last picture is the winner.

agree

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
