Bike is easy as it is flat as a pancake and closed roads and so is the run, can do the distances separately. I know I can complete it and if I had actually trained like I should of then I would have had a time goal but not that bothered about time. Note to self train instead of watching every game of the world cup on the sofa!! Still super excited about it though and can't wait for Sunday to come round.

you could treat this just as a good training day and try for training paces for each discipline.  Sometimes i think a flat bike course is worse than one with a few hills as you get no reprieve - you must pedal at all times. So, if you out bike your bike fitness thinking the course is easy, you will feel it  on the run!  Of course, depending on how much you are willing to suffer, instead of doing training paces, you can push it and just try to hang on during the run.

So, my great advice is to either treat the whole race as a long training day or go all out and see if you can hang on until you blow up. your welcome

I second this advice

Yup. I'd set some kind of Super Secret Goal for the bike and run. And don't overbike!

Haha...I'm not sure I have ever forgiven my coach for giving me this horrific trainer workout on my birthday--it involved covering up the power meter and going as hard as you could in aero for 30 minutes. Wanted to move things around but for some reason it didn't work out with work and other training that week. Plus my B-day always fell in the first few weeks of school, when teachers are just swamped anyway. I ended up doing the workout from Hell after school, probably because runs have to be done in the morning during Vietnam's rainy season, or there's a high chance of running in rain so heavy you can't see, and/or through flash flooding. I think I had a bowl of cereal afterward (after I could finally think about food maybe an hour later) and collapsed into bed. Not high on my list of greatest birthdays!

Thank you and hadn't noticed the autocorrect. I plan to try a cycle at 28kmph as I know I can do this on the flat and was going to try and start the run a 6 mins per k and see how I am feeling towards the end and adjust the pace accordingly, I plan on giving it everything I have and the time will be what every it is.

Anyone have any good taper advise? I have a 70.3 next weekend and am wondering/debating whether to just reduce my volume, intensity or both. Most of my workouts are no more than an hour normally so do I go hard for 30 mins instead? Thanks!

Tapering is like nutrition in that it's a little bit different for everyone (and individuals respond to it differently). Generally speaking, taper the run first, the bike second and the swim third. Usually there is enough intensity to keep you sharp.

Janyne is right. Normally I just keep that week light. For a Saturday event, my last run is the Tuesday before, last bike is Wednesday and last swim is Thursday. I will walk, so I am doing something without a lot of stress.

It is time for my annual giving of respect for those of you who live in train in Southern locations. I am still amazed at how you do it, especially this time of year. I have been dying in the heat and humidity. I am slow, sluggish and yesterday was so swampy at 85% humidity that breathing on my run was a chore.
So here's to you my Southern friends, you are incredible!

This is my first summer training in Atlanta - the humidity is real. I have been on treadmills for a lot of my mid-week runs for that reason. And I've had to start bringing a sweat towel on my long runs outdoors. I easily lose 3 pounds of sweat in a long run, even with drinking a crap ton of water. It's definitely a challenge!

It is yucky for sure! But, you do acclimate to it.  Before yesterday's run I thought it felt kind of nice out, checked the weather and it was 78* with only 90% humidity. The run before was 100% humidity, so 90 was a big break! It's a sickness .

I moved back here 19 years ago. I'm still not used to it.  I'll ride a bike anytime, heat and humidity don't matter. I hate running at this time of year, or at least what I remember of running (it's been a while).

Sorry I haven't been around, life just kind of got busy. I haven't been doing much training just to odd trail run here and there with some EPIC hills in them - yes Chris I mean epic in the true sense of the word. The last of the winter series runs is in about a week and a half and it has the worst of the hills. Other than that it is a bit over 6 weeks until my next road HM and a bit over 12 weeks until the marathon that I have planned for the second half of the year. Time to get serious about training.

We have added 3 new members to "team turtle" recently. One is a girl from my work that has started doing the trail runs with us and the other two are friend of E's, so the Manatee influence continues to spread. This means that we have gone from the 4 of us that did Dopey to now being 7 and a half. I say half because baby turtle has decided that she doesn't like to run in winter cause its too cold and wet. She's 10 so we are letting her be a princess for now.

When living in Saigon, I also would have thought that 78 with 90% humidity (typical conditions at maybe 6:XX in the morning) would be pretty comfortable. I WAS accused of being a machine! But to be honest, I would also realize every time I came back to a temperate climate that I never really enjoyed running in those conditions to the extent that I do otherwise. Not just a matter of climate but of having essentially one running loop. Ugh.

We are en route to IM Calgary 70.3 and this morning I did a trainer ride (I do bring the trainer on road trips, so I can do workouts even if I don't know where to ride) and then I just did this random 20 minute run around a neighborhood in Sandpoint, Idaho. It was cool--I haven't done something like that in a long time.

Ann-Marie is not human.

I have lived in it my whole life. I agree, Ann-Marie is not human

So we have established that heat and humidity stink and Ann-Marie is a machine.
Haha, apparently I’m a sick machine! 94% humidity for this morning’s run- makes for a nice combo workout. In fact, I almost didn’t go to the pool !

Originally posted by StaceyKPOL postSorry I haven't been around, life just kind of got busy.
Glad you checked in! The turtles are the Manatees’ away club!

Originally posted by Hot RunnerWhen living in Saigon, I also would have thought that 78 with 90% humidity (typical conditions at maybe 6:XX in the morning) would be pretty comfortable. I WAS accused of being a machine! But to be honest, I would also realize every time I came back to a temperate climate that I never really enjoyed running in those conditions to the extent that I do otherwise. Not just a matter of climate but of having essentially one running loop. Ugh.We are en route to IM Calgary 70.3 and this morning I did a trainer ride (I do bring the trainer on road trips, so I can do workouts even if I don't know where to ride) and then I just did this random 20 minute run around a neighborhood in Sandpoint, Idaho. It was cool--I haven't done something like that in a long time.
Have a great race!
