Hey everyone.  I'll try to catch up today.  Horrendous travel day yesterday -- I'll spare the details as you probably all been there and can imagine.  So not I've got head cold, in a conference in San Diego, more or less stranded on an 'island' surrounded by 10-lane roads.  I'm going to have to take a taxi somewhere to run today -- I can't take the hotel treadmill again...

Have a good day everyone.

Hotel Circle? I hate that place.

Did sufferfest again this AM.  I was going to ride a little easier, but it's damn near impossible once you put that on.  Final climb on Alpe d'Huez they say "put away the mirrors and tell the children to leave the room, because it's about to get ugly"...awesome.  You can't sandbag after that.

Still can't get Golden Cheetah to read my powertap though.  I just go off the target watts and have the joule though so not a huge deal...would be nice to see it on the screen though.

Hey, has anyone heard about the Boston Warrior half ironman distance race in late July?  A friend was talking about it at a party and I didn't know anything about it.  I found it online but wasn't sure on it.

It was IM day in the pool this morning, lots of fly, back and breast.  Going for a 40 min run at lunch as well - hoping the light rain holds off.

TankBoy - 2012-11-16 7:27 AMJust read over in the IMLP group that there will be a new HIM on June 2nd at Black Bear in the Poconos. It is not yet on their website, but this was posted by the person slated to sing the national anthem at the race so maybe they should know? If true it would be great as the Poconos 70.3 was cancelled. Also I find the Peasantman kinda funny in a good way.
That's great news! The Black Bear Half was dropped a few years ago and replaced with an Oly. CGI hasn't put it on their site yet, but they run a quality event.

Rev3 may or may not be in negotiations to essentially take over Poconos 70.3. But you didn't hear that from me.

I just got an email from CGI. They've changed the date of Black Bear to May 19th. They're keeping the sprint and oly. The Half is limited to 300 participants. They also have an Aqua Velo.  Registration is $175 until 3/31. $195 post. Black Bear has been a popular event for the NJ crowd.

Hi Jason,

You cannot do an easy sufferfest. It just won't allow you. I think that's what is so great about them, they are very entertaining. Local Hero is another great one, especially this time of year. Intervals of various lengths

I will post on the GC mailing list which I am a member of. Do you get any special messages ? Does it see your HRM ?

We'll find you a solution

Awesome, thanks Marc.  Yes, you are right.  I tried to put the Intensity Factor slide scale down a little but I still average 330 watts on the last 8' climb and was definitely "suffering".

I get no messages from GC.  It just doesn't find it when I go to add it.  I restart computer, quit the Garmin Ant Agent, then launch Golden Cheetah, then have the Garmin 310 and Joule 2.0 on while soft pedaling so it's active and it just says no devices found.  The one thing I can think of is something with the installation of Power Agent might conflict with it but then I wouldn't know how to fix it.  Uninstall Power Agent and GC and then Reinstall GC?  I only know enough about technology to really screw things up.  Usually not enough to actually fix things

Now I'm going to have to get Local Hero I think  I love the promos on all the videos on the site.  Very well done.  Makes me want the Hell Hath No Fury One...

Had a "nice" short interval workout on the bike yesterday.  I really pushed the last one...that was an eye opener...or maybe more like an "eye closer".

About to head out on a morning run...74 degrees I suppose.  And a little cloudy...CLOUDY...OMG...CLOUDS!!!  LOL!

Mini shoe review/rant:  I bought a pair of Newton all terrain Momentums. I've been running in the Distance U's and love them, but with sloppy weather coming thought I'd like something a bit more weather resistant. Holy moly, the Momentums are a threat to shred my feet. I guess I didn't try them out long enough in the store but the interior seams are wicked.  There is no way I can run in them. After about 3 attempts I went back to the store and was hoping for some type of solution.  It's not my LRS (who doesn't carry Newtons or trail runners) but I've purchased 4 or 5 pairs of shoes from this place.  The store manager, who must have skipped customer service training, told me there is nothing wrong with the shoe but that I must have purchased the wrong size. Ummm. How she knew that without looking at the shoe or having me try it on for her I don't know.  Since I'd worn them (for all of about 10 miles) they wouldn't consider an exchange or store credit. Grrrrrr. Maybe my expectations are out of whack, but even a bit of sympathy probably would have helped me feel better about $150 shoes that I can't wear.

TankBoy - 2012-11-13 7:02 AM Per both my MT and PT I use both the stick and a foam roller. The foam roller is great for trigger point-type work as described above, while the stick is a little better IMO for myofascial release. For those of you who are having recurring issues, what mind of warm up do you do before your run? It took my coach actually writing it down as part of my scheduled workouts (I am feeble minded, I guess) but I have had a lot of success with just a couple of minutes of myofascial release (with either stick or roller) then 15 minutes of walking and dynamic warmup prior to starting my run. I have become kind of a zealot about it, but it seems to have worked wonders for me.

I have the stick and a roller.  I tend to react to things, then get lazy.  I.e. after an injury I get fanatical, and then slowly just stop doing the things that are good for me......     I need to do it more everyday, and agree that small movements over the affected spot with the roller is best.

Warmups?  um, well...  anyway.....I never said I was smart.

Thankfully, this wasn't a full blown pop of the calf that makes it hard to walk for a few days.  It's a 2-3 on  1-10 scale.  Rolled and self massage with Traumeel this a.m. and wearing a compression sleeve today.  Some residual pain, but praise be seems like it will be a 2-3 day thing.  I hope.

As for weight, I am down about 9-10 pounds in the last 7 weeks, using myfitnesspal app.  Trying to get a solid sub 200 weight going.  Last night's calf issue sent me into a bit of a pity party and I ate a little more than usual.  Again, not so smart.

Okay, I realize I'm about 7 pp behind now, but better late than never

Chrispiglet, congrats on your continuing body reformation. Ups and downs (phys/emot/etc., one big sticky ball) are normal as you know.

When I have calf issues, other than stuff already mentioned, I tie an old-fashioned kerchief around my calf SUPER TIGHT with a DOUBLE KNOT, and make sure the knot is right over the muscle knot. Then I walk around (do my normal day) like that and it's like it works it out a little bit at a time over a few hours / daytime and then it is much improved if not gone.

That really is terrible customer service especially for a dealer who sells Newtons, which is an admittedly a niche shoe that doesn't work for everyone (not banging out newtons - the Distance model is one of the shoes I run in as well).

Newton prides themselves on customer service and offers a no questions asked 30 day guarantee if you order them online. They encourage their dealers to do so as well, but they also advise on their website that you are subject to the dealer's return policy. At the very least I would contact newton and share your story - who knows, they might make you whole? I am a big fan of supporting my local businesses and often pay more money to do so. But I wouldn't shop at my LRS if they did not offer a similar guarantee on all of the brands they carry. In my 12 years of shopping there I have only returned one pair of shoes, and I think it was worth it for both of us as we have bought A LOT of shoes there. Good luck with newton.

GoFaster - 2012-11-16 11:30 AM Do you download the sufferfest videos?

Yes.  It's fairly instant gratification.  Click buy and then download it.  I think it was about 1.5 gigs so it's a good size file and took awhile.  I downloaded it wirelessly though (which they tell you not to) but wasn't in a rush.  Then it's an unencrypted file so I think fairly flexible in what you can do with it.  I had it on my mac so I imported it into itunes and then synched it onto my ipad, but then I tried the golden cheetah import and that was the best.  I guess if you have trainer road, it's pretty cool on that too, but I don't really see the value in that when GC is free.  Not sure if I just don't understand the nuances of the product correctly.

Shoes:  That is weak.  Our local run shop would take them back no questions.  I know multiple people who have traded their shoes in after a few runs and it wasn't working out.  I wouldn't be giving them my business anymore.  New store or online....

Thanks Yanti     I was at least somewhat smart this time, as I didn't continue to run after it got really tight and cause a huge knot that lasts for well over a week.  Been there, done that....   It's now only a little tight, small area of soreness, and actually don't notice it just walking around the office.

I am convincing myself that I had three really good run weeks and the time off will do me good (andthatIwon'tloseallmyfitnessandnotbeabletodoanyracesnextyearandmyrunwillbecomeaspitifulasitoncewasandi'llhaveotstartalloveragain.....).  right?   right??????

Learned a valuable lesson about riding a fixie yesterday; during a climb, I felt my wheel slip in the dropouts a little and verified it by seeing (and feeling) a bit more slack in the chain. Thought about stopping to fix it but figured it wasn't a big deal and go to work no problem.

Leaving work, I had forgotten all about the wheel and during my first descent (which tops out at about 16%) my chain bounced into my spokes, locked up the rear wheel and I was left riding the skid to the bottom. Managed to keep the bike upright but I think the tire is shot!

Well, hey, there's a first time for everything, right? When's my turn???

, as I didn't continue to run after it got really tight and cause a huge knot that lasts for well over a week.  Been there, done that....   It's now only a little tight, small area of soreness, and actually don't notice it just walking around the office.

Oh. My turn is probably whenever I stop doing that, then.

Ya know I'd chew the remnant soreness out of it for ya if I were there ... uh oh ... picture vomit coming ... you knew this was going to happen sometime, right??? I LOVE THIS MOMENT ...

I am convincing myself that I had three really good run weeks and the time off will do me good (andthatIwon'tloseallmyfitnessandnotbeabletodoanyracesnextyearandmyrunwillbecomeaspitifulasitoncewasandi'llhaveotstartalloveragain.....).  right?   right??????

No, Chris. If you don't start the 20-week CA 70.3 plan TODAY, you will DIE. That's just that.

There's no such thing as starting all over again.

Even in my ill-advised (the self-advice, not the good words from y'all) Ironcram, it's been much easier the second (fifth, but who's counting?) time around.

It took me a second to realize why I was skidding, then I just held on, used the front brake and hoped for the best. Fortunately I have some experience riding in icy conditions (not that fast though) so I think that helped me keep the rubber side down through the skid.

I was less than a km from work so I walked the bike back to work and called for a pickup - I had nothing that was large enough to boot the tire.

10 lane road to escape?  Like Frogger?

Once upon a time I was a Frogger wizard, but all the cool kids played asteroids and space invaders... As an aside, I was a relatively early Macintosh adopter and in the late-ish 80's started playing a game called "Bolo." It was a networked, multiplayer game, which took advantage of the appletalk network protocol. As such it was incredibly novel at the time. 16 players could play at one time and you used your own personal army of tanks and pill boxes to try and control an island. My username when I played Bolo was "TankBoy" and I have used that handle online for the last 25 years.

I play Frogger here every day. It's called "driving in Indonesian traffic on Indonesian roads."

FULL FRONTAL BRAG coming on ...

That's why I banged out 8+ hours on the trainer today. I just don't ride outdoors here unless I have a private motorcade escort on closed roads (it's actually cheaper to buy than you'd think, definitely worth it for a group ride).

It was a cool ride. Mentally very tough, physically I felt fairly strong. Opposite of long road rides (to me): physically tough but mentally easy to be occupied and inspired by the surroundings, other riders, focusing on the road, etc.

Anyway, Michael - I hope you are able to make it across the road today for a run - don't forget that you actually can jump on the backs of the alligators... I gotta go do a strength routine, but am procrastinating just a bit.

Huh? Say Wha? that has to be either a) a typo or b) they measure hours differently in Indonesia; are those metric hours you are talking about?

You are stone-cold crazy, Yanti. Stone cold...
