soccermom15 - 2010-01-08 7:36 AM OK, so what would the MG do?Smile  I'm supposed to run a 5k tomorrow morning - it's the 3rd race in the Frostbite Series that I've been running with my daughter (she's not going to run this one).  The temp will be somewhere between 0-5*F at race start time.  Winds are supposed to have calmed down by then so hopefully the WC won't be too bad.  This is the first winter since I started running that I've been trying to run outside and not do all my runs on the TM, so I'm not used to running in these kind of cold temps.  I have enough winter running stuff to keep me warm during the run - it's the mental side that I'm having trouble with.  Just the idea of running in those temps is freaking me out.  Part of me says 'suck it up - once you get going you'll be fine' and the other part says 'you're nuts to even consider it'.  So which part do I listen to?  Just curious as to what you guys would do.
Janet

HTFU.....I tell my wife, "Put a toque and suck it up!!" I actually enjoy running in the cold versus really hot weather. You'll be surprised how overdressed you probably will be. I always try to dress for a few degrees cooler than it is. You will warm up.
It will definitely break up the monotony of running on a TM.
YOU'RE HARDCORE JANET -- DO IT!!!

I think I'm am having the post holiday stress disorder.   Stress from having to go to work a whole 5 days this week.   All I want to do is sleep in and curl up in front of a fire with a good book.  Alas, that's not happening.

Today I have a longish trainer ride because for once it's actually COLD (don't laugh...the high is 36 today).  Soooo, I'm taking movie suggestions for what I need to pick up at Block Buster to get me through.  I saw Chick Flicks last weekend.  Action is probably a good choice to keep me peddling.  Let me know what you've seen that's worth your time.

Happy Friday!

Kelly

Get a James Bond..Casino Royale or the new one(name escapes me). You get the action, plus a little Daniel Craig if you are into that kind of stuff.
Not an action, but The Hangover is awesome. Not for everyone, but great for us immature guys.

I love seeing numbers/data but am sooooo not a technical person ~ not a good combo, I know!  Needless to say, following is probably a question that I should already know the answer to.  However, I've been wanting something for my bike that tells me a bit more than just distance (my garmin tells me that) but (as much as I hate to admit) I am clueless.  Again, I have a garmin 305 so I'm not worried about something that will tell me HR.  I've been asking around and have found everything from $40-$thousands.  What is the dealio with this?  What is the difference between a powertap and a Cyclocomputer/cadence sensor besides $1500???

I forget the webpage off hand, but they used to sell a wired PT setup laced into a rim for about 600.

if you're interested in a wired pt, below is from an email i sent out a few days ago.  hope it helps.

so i spent some time today talking to saris (paul) and wheelbuilder (eric) eric about power tap's, in particular, the pt comp.  fwiw, i've seen of few of the bike people on BT speak highly or eric. here's what i have.

  • its wireless but will that really play a role in our "aeroness"
  • all of the mechanic's are the same. the accuracy of the comp should produce the same as the accuracy of the slc+
  • its not going to be phased out for at least a few years.
  • the axle is 12mm but its steel.  eric says slipstream data they ran in some instances shows the 12 mm alloy axle flex's enough that the rim actually touches brake pads on riders over 160 lbs.  of course you can put the steel axle in any model that has the alloy for thirty bucks or so.
  • the comp holds ~7 hours of data as opposed to 14 found in the higher end models.  this might be a big deal if, for instance you go away for a weekend and can't get to a computer to download your ride data.
  • there is one data set it won't dislplay that the others do, i forget which right now.  but paul says its still its there and available when you download it.

wheelbuilder will build the comp on the DT Swiss 585 (formerly the 1.2)  for $674.  they are in stock.  they are not listed on the website though so you have to call and talk to them.

competitive cylcist will build in on DT Swiss 465 for $659.  not in stock and they don't know when they will be in.  also the expected availabilty date on the wedsite is computer generated and means nothing.  this is exactly what the sales rep told me.

REI has it on an Mavic Open Pro for $699.  I didn't get time to look into this wheel much other than they are "bomb proof".. whatever that may mean.  if you are an REI member you'll get 69.99 back as a dividend or between july and december you can request that as a check.  so the price then is 629.10.  this ships free to the store so you can back this cost out as well when comparing.

on ebay and craigslist laced comp's are going for 550-700, from what i've found.

dalessit - 2010-01-07 8:50 PM well I guess I answered a personal question I had about how hard I train.  I keep thinking that I tend to give up before putting my body in any stress.  Tonights workout on the trainer.

15 minutes ez
4 x 30 second accelerations
5:00 all out TT (go as hard as possible)
10 minute recovery
2 x 1:00 all out TT
5:00 recovery (I threw up in my mouth a bit during the recovery, nice huh?)
3 x 20 second sprint (tremendous calf cramp when I stood up to sprint started yelling for Sam because I couldn't move, afraid I was going to fall over, she had to come help me get off the bike.)

Never finished the first 20 second sprint or final recovery.  Typing this my legs are trembling.

Best 20 seconds: 484 watts (never got to do a real 20 sec trial)
Best 60 seconds: 450 watts
5:00 TT: 283 watts (lame...)

I need to go through my file and see if there are any issues in that 5:00 TT, I am pretty sure I never got below 300 watts.  My PT sometimes seems to drop for a few seconds.
Best 5:00

Plainsman AU - 2010-01-07 10:33 PM So last night I was in Atlanta and Steve (Reno8) and I met for an adult beverage and some dinner.   Talked about a little BT...some of your ears were probably burning a little.  Yes, you know who you are  Will definitely take him up on the offer to cook next trip to the ATL.

On a good note, I went to The Big Peach Running Co. yesterday.  (Everything in Ga has something to do with a peach being that it is the peach state.)  The sales guy put me on an electronic measuring device which measured my arches.  Arches were middle of the scale, and I always thought they were flat.

He then video taped my stride and mechanics in slow motion.  He said I had a neutral foot strike, where other shoe stores had put me in the pronator category.  He said that my feet turn out a little, and may look like they pronate with the naked eye, but upon analysis in slo mo, he determined that I should be in a neutral shoe.  This may have been a contributor to my ITB injury.

Ran 4 miles today (before my 2100 swim) with no pain, so I am going to ease into a little more running and hope for the best.

AWESOME!   but stop talking about treacee

Janet-  Gotta run it!  Sorry.  No excuses.  Just add another layering of clothing!

For Movie's to watch on the trainer-- That is tough.  I prefer a good comedy to keep me going, or a really good "drama."    Hangover, Superbad, Tommy Boy, Usual Suspects, Good Fella's, Boondock Saints, Scarface, etc

To answer your question: SOmeone beat me up while I slept! I went to bed feeling fine, but when I woke up my legs now feel like crap! Well, today is a swim and strength day and I don't run (my long weekly run) until Sunday, Hopefully I can recover.

Doug

Thanks for posting!! Sorry you got attacked during the night, but somewhat glad to know others get that, um, warm and tingly feeing the next day too! :-) FWIW, I LOVE to swim when I am physically beat up, esp. in the legs. That non-impact stuff, and the gentle stretching/waking up of hips and ankles really feels loverly to me. Hopefully your strength is of the upper-body variety. And again, great job yesterday!!

x3 or 4 - wherever my post falls.  I'd do a short (half or full mile-sih) warm-up run before your race.  That'll help your body get warmed up and your lungs prepared.  You may even find then that you're overdressed - which is a good place to figure that out, rather than during the run.  When you do your WU run, plan to be done about 10-15 minutes before your race start time.  Then your body will just start to feel the cold again, so running will warm you up and actually feel great!

Go get it!

Hey folks!

I would like to get an overall answer.  I never had a coach in my life or even looked for one (why do I need a coach for being a couch potato? Laughing).

I was recommended a swim session that is 4 weeks with coaching, and emailing back and forth for swim workouts and times, etc. It's $75 for the 4 weeks.

Lmk what you think.  I don't want to do it and find that it's considered expensive, and I could have looked elsewhere. As far as I know, I've read that many many people get swim coach over anything else, and it's considered valuable...but I'm just concerned about the price, is it fair?

The gym I go to has Swim 101 classes (and even Triathlon class!! fun!), and since it's included in my monthly price (very cheap by the way), I don't need to pay extra...but it may be different from a coach that DOES triathlons/OWS.

75 bucks is super cheap, I pay almost that per lesson.

But I would still talk to the coach first and see how they work.  I think there are many swim coaches out there that don't know how to coach slow adults.

And Andy just like running, gotta do Tempo/Speed/LSD's all year .

OK, I'm going to go for it tomorrow.  I really want to do it, just needed that extra little push from you guys.  Thanks for the motivation!  I think I'm going to make my husband go with me (the visitor's center is open so he'll have someplace to stay warm while I run), that way if I end up frozen I'll have a way to get homeSmile.  Also going to take a thermos of hot chocolate along for afterwards.

The coaches that I've looked at are about that price per hour for short term.  Then upwards of $500 a month for full support and training plans.

I'd think about it!  But you can always ask for references, especially if they call themselves a 'coach'  Ask what certifications they have, how long they have been coaching as a one-on-one coach.  What races or events they have done and when they did them.  Make it a personal interview.  They want your money and you want their knowledge - first I'd make sure they had the knowledge that I need.

I'd also jump on the tri swim class.  Sometimes they only end up being a person telling you, from the deck, what the next drill is, but that's better than not having any help!
