Day 1 of week 2 in the books... Another quick cadence question... I just picked up a computrainer a few weeks ago and I have noticed that my cadence is much lower on it versus when I'm out on the road. I am generally around 90 on the road and I've been consistently about 79 on the CT. My assumption is that the courses I'm riding on the CT are hillier and possibly that is the reason (it's pretty flat near my house)? Just curious if this is normal or if anyone has had a similar experience..??Also, Jorge thanks for the cycling program...

I've found the opposite on my CT (although I live in a pretty hilly area).  I consistently stay at 90-95 cadence and am generally 10 lower outside.  I'm still new to cycling though so haven't figured out my sweet spot yet.

For Jorge's workout, are you using the coaching software in erg mode?  I've entered the first two weeks' of workouts as .erg files based on my current FTP (the power numbers will be tweaked as we go through the training and more testing sessions).  Use this site to create the files if you don't want to manually enter them in notepad -- http://63.134.234.143/tri/erg.asp

Using the CT in .erg mode makes it a breeze to hit the exact power numbers called for in the cycling plan.  For testing you'll want to switch to course files with a constant elevation (I will probably set mine to 2% constant grade for 5/20 min called for by the testing).

Thanks for the info...  That is really helpful...  I will look into it...  I am new to the CT so was unaware that you could do that...  I have just been riding the courses and trying to keep my watts in the certain ranges - which is not that easy with the changes in elevation...  Also, I have just been guessing as to FTP - I must admit that I am not really looking forward to the upcoming 20 min max effort ride...

week 2, #3 done...  programmed it into the CT and it worked great...  thanks again for the help...

Week 2, Day3 - Done.

Started hard then it felt easy and then it was quite hard.  When the set was finished my legs refused to ride another 1/10 mile to finish on a whole number.  Left it all on the bike.

Day 2 week 2 done.

Folks, need some help!  Background: wired PT (Comp SL) with a brand new CPU.  Worked several times then battery in CPU died (2 weeks old!).  New battery, hook up and everything works.  Do my workout and reads fine.  Put in CPU cradle, PowerAgent connects but shows no workouts.  It pairs fine but no workouts.  On the CPU I can cycle thru and see my avg and max Power, duration, etc.

Any ideas?

Have you tried to download using something other than PowerAgent? Like Golden Cheetah? Is it seated properly on cradle?

Haven't tried Golden Cheetah but will give it a shot.  I tried three times (each time taking on/off cradle) so I think it was seated properly but will watch that closer.

Completed week 2 workout 3 this morning and, just like last week (as it was the same), that 3rd set of 10' had me wanting to quit!

Glad it's test day on Monday as I think my LT may have changed a little since I last did one.

Hmm, I just noticed that the workouts are different between the power and HR plans.  Your comment about the 3rd set of 10' made me check as there was nothing about that on the power plan.

Jorge, is there a reason for the difference in the 3rd workout of the week (maybe others too, I didn't look closely)?

Yeah I noticed the difference in power vs HR plan last week when someone mentioned something like that---had me looking back to see where I messed up!!  Honestly I don't care because I know Jorge's power plan has worked for me in the past and these two "warm-up" weeks seem familiar!!

The HR plan is a slightly different in some workouts because the ability to track some workouts with HRM is a bit trickier. With power you know you need to shoot for 'x' number for 'y' minutes. With HRM you know you need to shoot for 'x' HR range but depending on duration and intensity your HRM might lag behind and will be affected by other variables (i.e. heat). Some workouts on the HRM are more geared to keep sets a bit longer and steadier to make the most out of those training by HRM.

But in general, both plans are very similar and both should get you pretty fit if you are consistent and train withing your own limitations!

a few general rules of thumb:

  • I like leaving at least 24 hrs between intense (or very long) sessions. if your ride at 8am on Monday then I try to leave any intense training out until after Tuesday 8am.
  • when you are focusing on a weakness (i.e. cycling) I prefer to focus on that and maintain the other two sports
  • if you want to focus on two weaknesses (i.e. cycling and running) I prefer to have one focus with more intensity less volume (i.e. 2-3 short intense bike sessions) and the other less intensity more volume (i.e. 3-4 runs mostly easy/steady and varying the duration).
  • The are MANY ways to set up a program, but you have to be careful because what I might be able to handle, you might not. Always set up goals based on your OWN limitations.
  • It is better to do less than overdoing it a bit more; that extra effort above your limitations can quickly spiral into a major injury.

Jorge,

Would you recommend ahtletes adjust training intensity or volume during test weeks?  Am I cheating the program if I increase the recovery period to 48 hours?  It is expected I will perform better on the test with a bit more rest.  But will I might realize better improvements if I approach the test workouts as if it is just another workout?  That is mentally hard for me to do.  I expect a test workout to be hard and I prepare accordingly.

Best Regards.

Not at all! in fact, it is better to test rested as you will perform at your very best and have better data to work towards pushing yourself harder. Better test = higher CP = tougher workourts = even greater gains CP!

I've had some troubles with poweragent and the joule recently. workouts come up on wko+, raceday or golden cheetah but not on PA. check to see if you have the latest version and maybe reinstall it.

I need to start logging my workouts again but I am all caught up; did wk #3 for the week and ready to do more this weekend. I am kinda ready to test next week but I know as soon as I start riding I am gonna be cursing at myself.

Bonus points to see who ends up cursing me the most during the 5 and 20MP tests!

Jorge,

How hard should the longer ride feel?   Today, the first 25 min interval at 70% was easy, then second at 75% was a tad harder but still aerobic; however, on the third at 80% I started to crater.   I finished its just my heart rate was into threshold territory to finish it...I ended up a couple of watts short.    Why such a big difference from 75% to 80%.   Do I need a second fan, I didn't feel over heated?   This is supposed to be the enjoyable ride.

I could never curse during the test, too busy sucking wind and deflecting the agony, but afterwards, I let loose!

HI, I'm new at this.  I do have a question.  What does the "T" stand for in the following example...

WU:
10' @ 65-70%FT + 5' alternating 30" @ 95-100%FT
30" @ 65-70% + 5' @ 75% T

MS:
6x5' (1' 70-75% FT) @ 85-90%

CD:
5-10' @ 65%

I'm new to the group and found the plan from the positive comments about it over at the forum on Ironman Lake Placid 2012.  I just finished the first week of the plan.  I found myself wanting to go faster and faster tonight -- the first long ride.  With a little discipline I was able to keep near the heart rate goals.  I suspect that will get easier to do as I move through the weeks toward more difficulty.  At some point soon, wanting to go faster is transformed into wanting the pain to end.

I'm just guessing but I would say it's a typo and should be "FT"

Thanks all, worked this time.  I suspect that when I replaced the battery something got lost and had to be linked once to get reset.

Getting ready to do the long ride of week #2---and to address the earlier post about 80% being tough---last week was a little discouraging because 80% for 25' seemed like way too much effort for what it was-as in I'm weak...........  But I know from the past-just go with it because it will be worth it!  Oh and I've found in the past two winters that when I mentally go into one of Jorge's workouts thinking it is an "easy" one that it ends up being way harder then it should be---for ME I have to go into all them mentally prepared to suffer and attack the workout....then it seems "easy."

Prep Week 2, Day 3 done.

ETA: I've uploaded my spreadsheets for Prep Weeks 1 and 2 for Power-based training (days 1-3 only, for the most part, but you can probably figure out day 4).  Just input your CP on the first page, and it will generate the necessary power ranges for the workouts.

If people are interested, let me know and I'll keep uploading them as I finish them (JUST IN TIME FOR TEST WEEK)

Week 2, day 4 is in the books.  I thought I would bump up each of the intervals by 5 watts compared to last week.  How bad could that be, right?    BAD!  I was sucking wind pretty bad for the last 10 mins or so.
