Yeah, it was only 2 2:00 segments out of a :30 treadmill, but it's a start. Just making sure the injury is gone before starting true run training Also hit a sweet spot trainer session, main set of 2 x 30 at 14 at 260, 1 at 290, 14 at 260, 1 at 300. Tough but good Testing this week. ugh I'm sorry ... ? (I think that's the right response ... I dread testing ... good luck and at least the pain will be over quickly) Seriously had to talk myself into going to the pool today ... linkie to my motivation article (particularly good for winter, methinks): www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=2166? My problem is usually being overmotivated/too much/too soon, so it was a bit distressing. Here's how I got myself to go: 1. Gotta be faster than Arend by April (shame works for me ... ) Thanks for that, Yanti. Perfect timing. It is 4:30am here and I am headed for the pool. |

Imagine a cold, snowy day in Boston And we are all commiserating around the basement bar in Cheers. The door opens and we all look up together and shout, "ELAINE!!!!" |

I find that when my legs are the good kind of tired (the right amount of stress over time), it takes me a mile - or two - to warm up, but if I hit my paces then the work has been paying off. It's a great feeling! When is the goal race, or is it a "this season" goal? Matt |

Veteran 1677 Houston, Texas | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! After a bit of time off swimming, I was planning to make my triumphant return today -- unfortunately, we are having a "deep freeze" here for the next couple days and we swim in an outdoor pool. Coach said the session was canceled due to weather. I don't think we're supposed to get over freezing for the next two days (I know this isn't abnormal for some you you, but this sucks!!). On a positive note, spring/fall will be back on Wednesday, and then it's supposed to be summer again on Thursday. Crazy weather! Oh, and I'm bike testing this week as well. I think it's going to be a painful week! |

I was reading through my old race reports - and from my first half, you told me that I'd be thinking towards the end that I should have swam harder. That happened |

Tough but good Testing this week. ugh Great news Chris. I haven't run in almost 12 weeks. LOL. On a side note, my dad just signed up for the Honolulu Marathon at the end of this year. I guess somehow I've inspired him, but he just wants to be one and done to check off the bucket list. I tried to give him as much advanced warning as possible, but registration was only $26.20...and he knows if he can't comfortably run 20ish a week by August that he likely won't do it. He's going to be 61 this year, eats extremely healthy, and is in very good shape as far as overall fitness...but not running. He's retired, and goes to the gym 6x a week. It was funny trying to explain to him that you don't run 26 miles in training at all and that your runs vary in distance. I told him to just try and get used to run/walking 20-30 minutes a day, 4x a week for now and check back with me in 6 weeks. He's beeing trying to run the past 4-5 weeks, but doing way too much and way to intense. Edited by Jason N 2014-01-06 12:58 PM |

Funny how long 6 weeks can be when you WANT to run, and how short it can be if you're doing something else (iow, not running "on purpose"). Chris, with all that said, how'd it feel to be back on the street? Jason, I think that's great about your dad. Bucket list or not, to decide to pick up that challenge is terrific! Please do post how he's doing as his training comes along - I love these stories! Matt |

Seattle | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! My first week of marathon training is complete!!!! It feels really nice to get back to something a little more in my comfort zone. Not that I don't think all of my time spent out of it has been extremely beneficial. I'm just happy to be able to really throw myself in without too many questions. Also, I can focus on eating as the two go hand in hand |

Elite 3779 Ontario | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Originally posted by TankBoy Originally posted by GoFaster Neil - dont sweat it too much. When I come back from a layoff or prolonged illness I too wind up with my HR (sometimes wildly) uncoupled from my perceived effort - it is perfectly normal. It usually takes about 10~14 days for them to come back in line. I usually just elevate my zones by about 5 BPM in the interim, which is usually not enough to fully compensate but I figure it is better to come back a little conservatively. FWIW if I just ignore HR completely and run by RPE it takes longer for the two to get re-coupled. Need a suggestion, though I'm not sure an answer exists. I've been sick the past 3 weeks or so, and while I'm through most of it I'm still suffering with congestion, but my issue is an elevated HR. I start a workout 15-20 beats higher than normal, and then I'm hitting my "max" HR on efforts that should only be a Z3/4 effort, so I'm not doing the workouts at the level I would like to see. Thanks Rusty! |

Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Well, swimming was a bust for me today - got to masters and the pool was all locked up. The guards showed up and a bunch of the regular folks, but no coach or backup with the key. So we waited around a bit, but then I thought heck, I will just go to the Y. So I get there and the boiler is busted and the pool closed for repairs (at least they are getting a brand new boiler). So I flipped tomorrows workout to today thinking I will just go to masters tomorrow. But just now got an email that the University where I do masters was opening late tomorrow due to weather, so no masters tomorrow morning either. Ah, well - so it goes. |

Chris, with all that said, how'd it feel to be back on the street? Dunno, I did it on the treadmill to increase the boredom Felt good to get my legs moving in that way though. Although I lost a good bit of run fitness, I've gained some bike fitness. I think maybe taking 2-4 weeks off running even when not injured (what?) might be a good idea, give everything a chance to just clam the f down? thoughts? |

It eventually plateaus and tapers a bit so I can manage it but those first few weeks are a little crazy-town. If by "us" you mean this thread, yeah, I'll probably be in and out.
