Master 6834 Englewood, Florida | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors New Year 2014--OPEN Originally posted by Artemis Originally posted by cdban66 I have. I used Saucony for awhile, but I didn't like them in the long run. It's just really frustrating! Originally posted by Artemis I don't know, Kirsten. I was having the same problem with the Ravenna before I stopped running in August, so those definitely need to go. The Trance felt ok, but they just felt so heavy and like they were "too much" a lot of the time. It's really frustrating. Jen, you are tugging at my heart here. I have found shoes to be so very personal. I have tried a bit of everything and all I can say is that you'll find something, just keep after it. I know you are a Brooks fanatic, but have you tried any other brands? I am so sorry to hear that, because my Saucony's were good for me, but more because you are frustrated. One thing I would add is that you need to build slow and consistently, take time, walk/run every day that you can, but only for a short time period. And I'll add that if I can help in any way, then I will. |

Master 3870 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors New Year 2014--OPEN Originally posted by Artemis Ravennas are my newest Brooks, but so far I wouldn't buy them again. The Adrenalines feel better on my feet/legs. Have you tried a pair? They are stability, which I wasn't sure about, but I really like them.Manatees, I am super grumpy today. I made it to the gym to run (yay!), got the last available treadmill (yay!), and started running. I was running slower than I know I can to warm up, but I made it about 10 minutes before my arches and shins started hurting. This happens any time I wear my Ravennas. Obviously, I'm not wearing them any more. I've also had it with my other pair of support shoes, the Trance. I've been wearing neutral shoes (Ghost) during my Body Back classes and doing 10 - 15 minutes of running without any of these hints of pain. Do I just run in the neutral shoes for awhile and see how it goes? I am so frustrated by this whole thing. |

Expert 1038 Noosa | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors New Year 2014--OPEN Hi, I'd love to join! I've been on BT for a few years now and was with the SWBKRUN MG until it disbanded before Christmas. I've really enjoyed the group thing and learned heaps. Anyway, here's my Bio: NAME: David Simpson I always played a lot of sport but never really considered myself sporty, I just played for fun. At Uni I played rugby and did a lot of drinking. I also played squash until my 30's and then decided to enter the City2Surf race in Sydney and that got me into running. I ran the Gold Coast marathon a couple of years ago (3:52) but have stuck to shorter distances since - those last 10ks are just too hard on the knees! We moved up from Sydney to Queensland 4 years ago and I bought a bike, joined BT and started triathlons. I've done a few sprints, some Oly's and last year did Ironman Australia in Port Macquarie finishing in 13hrs 14mins. FAMILY STATUS: Married, 3 kids aged 15,12 and 10 plus 2 labradors My BIL says he wants to do an IM this year, probably IMWA in December so I'll join him if he doesn't chicken out otherwise my year is open, maybe I'll do some HIM's. Cheers, David

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors New Year 2014--OPEN Originally posted by Lanne I am a Nervous Newbie, nervous about what? how to read training plans, that I might ask silly questions that sort of silly stuff I would really like some ideas on meals during race week if anyone has any plans or suggestions NAME: Lana STORY:I have always been into sport mostly team sports basketball, hockey, netball (netball fanatic) sometimes play 4-5 games a week but injuries are starting to catch me up there. At 35 I did my first triathlon since school, to support a friend whose husband had bought her an entry for Christmas! Cant say she was impressed with the gift she in the end did not compete I have gone on to become a little bit enthusiastic. I enjoy exercise but do need motivation to do it, as long as I am part of a team or have paid money for something I will commit, mostly I like exercising outside I have tried gym memberships but have failed (mostly from not knowing how to use the equipment and gym rooms can be rather daunting with all that muscle building going on.) So basically I like to do triathlons to keep fit and motivated, I have done 5 tri's with my 6th the Saturday. FAMILY STATUS: Married with 2 children 5 & 6, 2 dogs Labradors, 2 chickens, 4 fish and 1 crazy crab CURRENT TRAINING: Before Christmas I was training 6 days a week and have just picked that up again after new year. I train once a week with a PT group hoping to up that to 2 times in Feb. I try to follow the beginner sprint plan as best I can but sometimes there is just not enough hours in the day THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Telstra Tri Series 2013 RACES/EVENTS: Telstra Tri Series Left Bank All Bar None Tir Womens Sun Smart Tri Triathlon Pink BODY COMPOSITION: 5ft 11in 86 kg (have lost 5 kg since oct but would love to lose some more, seem to have plateaued) YAY! Another one from WA ... did you do Hillarys last year? StaceyK and I here did it together, it was great fun. Anyway, very good Oz representation in this group, and YES we know what netball is. You already had one request for info about the crab ... what I want to know is, how do the Labradors get on with the chickens? Or have you got a chook pen? |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors New Year 2014--OPEN Originally posted by awalden22 NAME: awalden22 / Ashley STORY: I am 25 years old and I live in the Indianapolis, IN area and have been here all my life. I graduated college (Purdue University) summer of 2012 and currently work full time as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. My husband is actually the one who got me interested in triathlon. Last spring he came up with this "crazy" idea for him to compete in a sprint distance triathlon. I got to thinking about it and decided that I wanted to train with him, so I signed up too. We trained all summer together and the event was held in September. Somewhere towards the end of training I lost focus and wasn't doing what I needed to be in order to be ready for the event. So I went with him to the event that I had also signed up for (and paid for!), but just watched from the sidelines because I was too afraid that I wouldn't be able to finish. I know this year is going to be different. I am really motivated to complete several sprint distance triathlons this year and really get into this sport. I enjoy training and look forward to going to the gym. I am currently trying to overcome the mental block/anxiety/fear of failure that held me back last year. I am positive having this group to communicate with on this thread will definitely help me out of my mental rut! FAMILY STATUS: I am married to my wonderful husband of only about 2 1/2 months at this point (we just got married this past October) and we have two dogs. A black lab mix named Sophie, whom we adopted at a shelter and a cock-a-poo (cocker spaniel/poodle mix) named Ellie who we have raised since a puppy. Two completely different types of dogs, but they sure do keep us entertained! CURRENT TRAINING: Like I mentioned in my story above, I did train for about 2 months last summer but then kind of fell off the wagon during the fall and beginning of winter. I blame a lot of it on my wedding - time consuming! But I have no excuses now. I just started training for my very first event taking place in April last week. I am currently working out 5 days a week for about 1 - 1.5 hours each day. Swimming 2X per week and alternating biking and running between once a week and 2x a week. More biking overall though because I am not as good at that. I am also incorporating in some basic strength training 3x a week. I am following a training plan that was published in triathlete magazine. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: 1. BSU Spring Sprint Tri - April 19th 2. Carmel Swim Club Sprint Tri - April 27th 3. Muncie June Sprint Tri - June 7th 4. Columbus Challenge Sprint Tri - August 9th 5. Purdue Half Marathon - October 18th 2013 RACES/EVENTS: Sadly, I didn't complete any triathlon races in 2013 even though I signed up for one. I did complete the Indianapolis 500 mini-marathon in May 2013. BODY COMPOSITION: Ever since I left high school I have struggled with my weight. I went from being very active in high school to doing practically nothing in college and of course gained the "freshman fifteen" and then some. I have not succeeded in losing that weight yet. I used to be one of those that would try any diet plan and exercise plan because I was so desperate to lose the weight even if it wasn't healthy for me. My husband and I recently started transitioning to a No Sugar No Grains lifestyle (NSNG). So far it is going very well and we are seeing some great results. I have finally realized that it's not all about the weight loss but more about the quality of life and just being overall more healthy and if you are doing things right, the weight will come off over time. So that is the path I am on now hoping that I can shed about 30 pounds. I don't have the ideal racer's body. I am 6 feet tall and have wide hips, just a bigger built person. But I do know that as long as I keep eating right and exercising regularly that I will eventually will have a more ideal body for competing in events. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone! Hi Ashley! Great stuff--and congrats to you and your husband One of our Manatees (jobaxas, I'm sure she'll be around shortly though she's very busy) has just done amazing things with NSNG. We look forward to shepherding (manateeherding?) you through your first tri! |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors New Year 2014--OPEN Originally posted by tricupcake NAME: Kim STORY: I did my first triathlon in 2008, in the midst of a divorce. I had developed some bad habits and something inside me clicked and made me take control of my life for the first time in a very long time. I injured my knee (torn meniscus) at the end of 2008 and fell back into my lazy ways so no races until 2011. During that one, I had a severe case of plantar fasciitis so it was a case of just getting it done. After that, I had surgery to have a bunion removed. In 2013, I had signed up for another sprint and was completely dedicated to my training during the first 3 weeks of January. Then we got news that my mom had lung cancer. I was traveling to and from Texas (I live in the Chicago burbs) and the stress just got to be too much so I decided to drop out. Along with my mom's cancer diagnosis, we realized that she also has advanced dementia. It was something that started while she was in the hospital and has progressed from there. Also, last March, my youngest stepdaughter was killed in a car accident. Needless to say, I'm hoping for a better year. FAMILY STATUS: I'm 41, married for almost 4 years (anniversary in March) to a man I married after knowing for only 2 1/2 months. I have a 29 year old stepdaughter and two grandchildren, ages 7 and 3. We also have 3 fur babies (border collie/lab, golden retriever/corgi --or something to that effect, and an orange tabby cat). CURRENT TRAINING: Getting back off the couch again this year. Just moved to a new town and have a new gym membership to boot. My goal is to get active again and keep the injuries at bay. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Esprit de She - 6/8 but would like to find some more to keep me motivated 2013 RACES/EVENTS: BODY COMPOSITION: I lost about 25 lbs in 2012 and actually managed to keep it off in 2013 which is really the first time that's happened in a long time. I am still quite fluffy and need to lose about 80 lbs. My goal is to lose 6-8 lbs a month by training and following a keto diet. Welcome, Kim. I'm so sorry to hear about your stepdaughter. You are an amazingly strong woman. It's also a big challenge to have ageing and struggling parents--my mom has Alzheimer's and I hear you about the going back and forth between cities. I think you will find a lot of support here! I'm not sure if the keto thread is still active in the Nutrition Cafe forum here, but quite a few people were reporting in with results and experiences. |

Especially since I am kind of thick at time. Took me forever to figure out what a Melon Press was. Not sure I have yet, and it's not like there is a Wikipedia for it. NAME: marcag / Marc STORY: Used to be quite a bit heavier. Started to run for health reasons. I hadn't swam in 30 years but decided to go back to it in 2009. A friend convinced me to try a triathlon and I got addicted CURRENT TRAINING: Mostly HIM and Olympic distance. I train about 9-10 hours per week during winter and up to 17-18 during summer. My logs are pretty accurate. THIS YEAR'S RACES: Tremblant 70.3 (good), Vegas 70.3 WC (bad) and Miami 70.3 (good) 2014 RACES: I qualified for 2014 70.3 WC which will be held at Mt-Tremblant. That is the only race currently on my schedule. I also qualified for FIMA masters swimming WC next summer so I will probably do that as well. ( No I am not a very good swimmer so there is hope for everyone :-) ). I am a relatively well balanced triathlete although my run is the strongest of the 3 sports. I may do more Olys next summer. I did those in 2012 and had a blast. WEIGHTLOSS: Definitely need to drop a few pounds before the season starts. What would make me a good mentee ? Apparently I am CLEAR. Woohooo!!! PS : This seems like a very dog friendly group. I am the proud father of a Malamute. |

Could it be that your feet/legs are adjusting to the support shoes? I know with my orthotics I was told to wear them for 2 hours the first day, and go up by an hour each day until I was up to a full day, so that my body could get used to them. Did you do that with your shoes? Your neutral shoes may not bother you because your bod is used to them? Sorry, not much help... What Kirsten said. It sounds silly but it does seem to make a difference. |
