Good morning!

So, i am training away.  I can't believe we are getting down the crunch time before Ironman! eeeks! I am alternating between super excited and very nervous.  But in all seriousness it's going well.  It's actually seeming possible and I am feeling good. I'll be slow but i have reasonable expectations for the day.

This weekend I have a half-iron tune-up race so hopefully that's another good confidence booster. It's a mass start so that will be perfect for working out my swim related jitters. Thankfully, I also start the next round of coached swim group - there was a two week gap between sessions and my swim volume was horrible!

Jen - are you racing Peterborough?  Should be a good tune up for IMMT.  Best of luck.

x2 Jen Good luck - and be careful this weekend!

Yes, I am.  Hopefully it's not too hot!  Are you racing Neil?

I honestly have no idea how I will do - i really don't know what the bike course is like and how the heat will play out for the run.  We'll see.  It's a tune up but i would definitely like to do better than my Muskoka from a couple of years ago.

I'm not racing this one, but from word of mouth, the course is not as hard as Muskoka, but is also no cake walk either.  It's going to be a rolling course on the bike, and the run doesn't seem to offer any shelter from the sun - so be prepared for running in midday heat.  Peterborough has historically been a very hot race, and given the current weather I think you'll need to adjust your pacing accordingly for Sunday.

Hope you have a great race!

Good 56 mile ride for me, stayed aero the whole time and averaged 22.8mph (36.5km/h)

I think I am fast enough to draft Bryan on a bad day for him. Wow! That beats a KOM.

I paced by HR, not power this time. I find it much smoother.

Got in a solid (for me) OWS this morning, but it was WAY too hot for the wetsuit.  Trainer ride and transition run later.

Looking forward to seeing the KOM fest on Strava later.  I have only posted a few outdoor rides and haven't been that active on it yet, but I'll get there.

I'm curious:  For those of you who have completed an ironman or are currently training for your first, did you go through a roller coaster ride of "I can't do this", then "I'm gonna crush this", and everything in between?  I'm a confident guy in most every endeavor and find myself in uncharted waters at times.  I suspect it's normal, but as I said, just curious.

I am so with you on the wavering confidence.  It's seeming more and more possible now that it's just 1.5 months away.

The overall fatigue doesn't help.  Getting extra tired means my overall mood declines and suddenly i suck at everything. Especially the swim.

Thanks! I did pick it because I knew it wasn't perfectly flat like Welland which would really not be all the helpful when training for Tremblant. But all i have to compare is Muskoka which is a constantly challenging course and it's longer than 90k so there's that where I may be able to make up some time! hahaha!

I wil probably pack a visor and my handheld water bottle if i am not going to get much shade on the run.

Several of you are racing IMMT

There is a lot of talk of some of the challenging parts of the bike course but from everything I can see, it's a fast course. But don't discount the hard parts of the bike courses.

I know several people that did it and they did very well. Most PBs.

For example one guy I know did a 5:31 in Muskoka and did a 5:18 at Tremblant.

A buddy of mine did 5:32 in Florida and 5:22 at tremblant

One friend broke 5hrs for the first time ever.

I have only heard of good results. I think you guys are going to like it.

. Because I'm thinking of dumping training peaks as the paid strava version does some power break down for me. Go check my logs and you will see the breakdown. Honestly todays ride was a bit weak, but it breaks the data down nicely.

Have you looked at Golden Cheetah 3.0 ? Does some good power analysis stuff and with 1 click, uploads to Strava. So you only need to load to GC and then it will upload to Strava

Hi All. I was on night float last night and the senior resident let me go early this morning because nothing was going on. I got home in time to watch the Tour and then proceeded to fall asleep while watching....so just turning on prime time coverage now!

I had a bit of a break through workout today in the pool. I did 12x100 @ 1:40 and held 1:28-1:30. Pretty happy with that since it was long course meters and I've only been back really swimming for a few weeks!

Night float again tomorrow. I'll get up watch the Tour, get my LT bike workout done and then chill until work!

Happy July 4 to all you Americans!

Went on a ride with one goal today.  Attack a hill and go for the KOM.  Ended up 3rd on the 2.8 mile climb at an 8% average.  There is a small gate I had to climb over with my bike that apparently was open when the KOM leader did his ride.  I ended up 29 seconds behind him, and noticed on the comparison graph that I was 16 seconds ahead of him just before the gate, and 14 seconds behind him just after it.  So maybe I should have beat him by 1 second?  Oh well.

You should sue strata for emotional distress /pink. Nicely doneHad a good couple days. Last night ran a hilly 10k then got 4k (yards) in the pool. Today was a hilly 36 mile ride with a fast (for me) transition run of 3.5 miles at 8:20 per. Used the 910 so will be loading into Strava when I figure out how

How does Strava calculate power ? I know my rides are done with a power meter and it's reflected in Strava. I did a Cross bike ride and it says no power, which is correct, I don't have one on that bike.

But guys like Bryan have power numbers and I don't think they use power meters.

Some of the segments I could try have crazy power numbers and I'm wondering if they are real

I wonder how long it will take for people to start tampering with their Garmin files just to win a segment or playing head games with the competition.

I think Strava does some power estimation based on if you enter in weight values for yourself and your bike.  Of course, the one major thing it does not factor in is wind.  Strava says my 10 minute peak power is over 500 watts.  That's because it was when I was ripping down from Hawi with a 25 mph steady tailwind at 38 mph (without my powertap).

I agree that it's just a matter of time before people start messing with their Strava files, but I'm not really worried about it.  You don't actually "win" anything, and with a small racing community here, people know if you are "legit" enough to ride what your garmin file says you did.  If you had the audacity to alter your garmin file just to win a Strava segment...you'd be made fun of pretty bad.  It wouldn't be bragging rights...it's be pretty shameful.

I don't know how Strava calculates the power but it is a estimate. If you see a lighten bolt by the power number its a true number from a powermeter. If you change from a road bike to a TT bike the power numbers will fluctuate for the same ride.

Well, I got a CR on Strava. Apparently this is a KOM for running.

Not sure how it makes these things up. That segment of road is traveled by deer, turtles and other critters, but I doubt anyone with a Strava account.

I am guessing that because it had a good grade (5-6%) it decided to make it a segment. By the way, 5-6% on a run is not pleasant.

Yeah, unlike cycling, 6% on the run ain't fun going up OR down... From the looks of your run there are only one or two deer that are faster than you in that neck of the woods - nice!

sup boys and girls!!!

Marc, nice run, i was checking that bad boy out this AM on Strava!!!

I got a little 30 miler in early this AM, no KOMS, i tried for 3 and came up short, it was hot and muggy, i was having a hard time getting air.

The Kestrel is totally awesome in road trim, i ordered a set of clip-ons for it, so i can still use it as a drop bar TT bike.

i do not miss running...much

and after the scolding i got in THAT thread, i will take my Bike-split-a-thon a$$ and totally avoid anything to do with Tri talk and the iron distance area, people do not want to listen or reason. There is a method to my madness.

I am sure i offend people, in this world it is inevitable. But as long as Fred's comment about me having balls was a compliment, i am sure to keep entertaining you guys!!!

i think we all respect each other enough that if you thought i was a total douchebag you woulda told me by now.

or at least i hope, lol!!!

If anyone was looking for a new road frame or SRAM R2C TT shifters, lemme know before you go the ebay route, i will be listing some stuff for sale pretty soon now that i know i like the bike as a roadie.

Thanks guys,

Glad I did it. Was not thinking that as I was running.

Then I decided to be a hero, go for an OWS. Not pretty, but heck, I ended getting it done. So I'm toast for the day.

I have to research my run pace a little. I think I don't work the downhills enough and maybe the uphills too much. Not sure. Need to see if there is optimization to be found.

Miller time !! Well actually Rickard's red time but you know what I mean.

Fred D - 2012-07-05 5:18 AM Chris, my 910xt is alright. It does a poor job on instant pace but I use average lap pace for 1 mile so it is ok. It's waterproof with a long battery life. I like the swimming functions as well. I haven't 'hated' mine the way some have but I tend to have realistic expectations for devices. My favorite device is my Garmin 800. Best Garmin ever by FAR!

I've ony used it for 2 runs and a bike ride so far, but I haven't experienced any issues, or maybe I am just not smart enough to realize them LOL.  I also use lap pace and not overall pace, so it's no big deal if it works or not.  As I recall the overall pace function on the 305 never worked that well either.

Ironically, I am not a big "data on the go" guy.  Primarily because then I start looking at it, and thinking about it, and chasing a time or pace when I need to be going easier usually.  My 305 was set up with (on the run) time, distance, heart rate.  One metric each screen.  Bike was distance and time and something else...  Pace is not really relevant to me.

So far I think it's a great tool.  Looking forward to getting it in the ocean for a 3 miler Sunday.
