Better late than never...

A RR from last year.  OK, a bit delinquent, but a fun day!

Funny how these help recall the buzz and excitement of the day (at least for the author).  I really do love me a good race day.

I'm back home now for a couple weeks. Got a lot of solid running done on the island including an absolutely beautiful long run on the trails

My mom and I camped on the beach for the entirety of the trip

I even got a mountain run in with two of my cousins. That's right, goat runs in the family

Then on Saturday I volunteered as course sweeper for the half marathon I typically run this time of year. What an experience! Nothing quite like running 5 miles with about 40 lb of course signage in your arms. I ended up doing an out and back and got an over 25 mile long run in. A great jump-start to marathon training

Ha..That was me. I ended up getting a 140.6 sticker for my truck but I sold that truck and bought a car a few months ago. I miss my truck but LOVE my car

Haha isn't that usually the case?

TJ, your best bet would be to contact the RD. Just to cover all your bases and help avoid confusion for the RD. However, I imagine the racing company doesn't own this land and its open to the public. So, you can kind of do what you want. I would just try to stay out of everyone's way.

I wouldn't ever count on a course being marked, though So, be prepared. caltopo.com and google earth are your new besties.

So, ummm.... a quick question.

Was tooling around BT to get caught up and it seems like it's sooooper quiet - and maybe has been for a while.

Has traffic really slowed here the past 10 months or so?

Just wondering what y'all think.

Eerily similar to my Mom's services a couple months back (same town, family, etc.), but was great to celebrate again with family, and we were back (with kids) to see her the week before she passed.  So, I'm feeling very lucky that she and the great-grandkids (and grandkids! - me and my sibs) got to see each other again before she passed.

Caught a nasty crud on a biz trip to Belgium couple weeks back and am better, except for either a pulled intercostal or broken rib.  Little sore, but...

I'M GETTING BACK IN THE POOL TONIGHT!

First swim in something like forever.

And this just in - I think I'm gonna register for a race or two this year, after all.  A year off is enough!

Best,

Sorry to hear about your grandmother, but sounds like she lived a wonderful life. Glad y'all got to spend time with her so recently.

What races are you looking at?

My hockey team, the Black Widows, have officially made it into playoffs next weekend!  I think we landed in 2nd place in the division, the point standings were ridiculously close down to the wire, with each game being important to position.  We finished the regular season with a win against the first place team, which probably had a lot to do with they only had 7 skaters for the game, but hey, we beat them and finished on a high note!

Yay Black Widows!!! So do y'all play Iggy Azaela when y'all come onto the ice?

Not sure, I have pretty much just stuck with the manatee thread and nothing else. I do know they changed the organization of the forums awhile back.

Thinking about the Austin Oly (Lifetime, IIRC) some time in May for fun and getting back into it.  Then an Oly here on Labor Day and maybe Austin 70.3 around October.  Prolly do a 10k or two (CapTex is in a month, and Kim and I might run for fun - cuz we're not ready to race by any stretch!) and maybe a HM or two, depending on what's nearby or fits with travel.

Mostly miss having a race to prep for.  I like training, but race day is to me the carrot - I love race day!  Doesn't even matter if I'm racing or just participating, so I'm gonna try that and get back after it a bit.

Kind of a meh plan, compared to seasons past, but just deciding to race again at all has me buzzin'!

That seems a bit more than a race or 2!  Glad you're getting back into it and I'm very sorry about your grandmother.  I don't know for sure if it's more quiet on BT -because i don't stray from Manatees except to look at the RR, but i've heard rumblings that it is.

I found the satellite setting on Strava and was able to map out the race course and upload it to my phone. Thanks for the idea! Based on the satellite view it looks like an amazing course and I'm really looking forward to it.

ETA: RD said he's fine with it.

There has been at least one thread about it and that thread even discussed the fact that the mentor groups are part of the downfall. As a matter of fact this group was specifically mentioned.  I venture out in to the other waters occasionally. I generally don't comment because I feel like folks more experienced than I usually have the answer covered.

I realize I havent been posting much. I continue to focus on only biking on days ending with a "Y" and am looking forward to the point when I can actually take a bike outside to ride.... should be soon.

Anyways - Here is some stuff that arrived in the mail today.

First sideways picture is a new set of tires, mounted on the front wheel is currently a CX tire which is pretty aggressive and I also have a set of road tires but lacked something in between. The Schwalabe CX Comp's on the left side of the picture I am hoping will be good for the mixed road/gravel race that I have coming up.

Second is a funky little adapter that goes onto the back of my seat post clamp so I can mount a rack. I need a rack and pannier for a charity ride where I volunteer as a bike tech and need to carry tools and tubes to support the riders on course.

Shoulder has been handling running really well for some time. My run fitness had plummeted so far that it really hasn't been limiting this for some time. My easy pace is legitimately several min/mile slower than it used to be, and that's using HR to help figure it out. Strides can still easily get down to 6/mi now, quite a bit faster than any aerobic marker says! Building back in using the Daniels White plan as I'd previously been having running issues. Figuring I'll go up into the Red next and maybe then the Blue. See what I feel like at that point as it's a number of months off.

Weight on the shoulders seems to be something else. Still actually get a little soreness carrying the gym backpack into the gym, but running has been just fine.

With healing injuries, it does seem to be the little things that tweak it....I remember when I injured my elbow, for about four weeks after I could swim pain-free, it still hurt when putting on my goggles for some reason. And forget about squeezing myself into a compression suit or top!

In other news, I finally get a recovery week and an off day today. The last two weeks have been pretty epic, between field trips and other events at school and some pretty peak-volume training for me. By the end of Sunday, I got the feeling I'd trained so hard my HAIR was probably fading. Don't know if that happens to anyone else. I don't so much get sore as just feel kind of washed up. Slept really, really well Sunday night and last night (after a bunch of distance swim sets).

Good day all, I hope you are all doing well and enjoying whatever opportunities you have this week.

Ben - I hope that the healing continues, it is good to see that you were able to run for a bit.

Melanie - GOOOOO Black Widows! Pretty cool that you are in the playoffs, have a blast!

Adrienne - Great looking trip to Hawaii. Is this trip 2 or 3 for you to the islands?  I believe if you go back 2 more times, you get an honorary resident card

Matt - I am sorry to see about your grandmother, although it is good to see you back, and ready to race. I hope your racing goes well. My observation is that BT is ever evolving, people come and go, and there is a ebb and flow to it all.

TJ - It looks like you're setup for a nice long run, way to get it all ready to roll. Keep on training.

Dave - I like the looks of that tire, it is a nice tweener design. Enjoy the racing, and the volunteering!

Yanti - Please take care of the myriad of ailments. It seems to me that the knee may be one of the 2 or 3 things going on.

Karen - Get your rest now while you can, it sure looks like coach is pushing you pretty strong.

Lisa - Your pics from the trip have me and TW cranked up for some fun out there.

I have been getting a few runs and rides in on the trails lately. Fun stuff. Keep on keeping on!

Just wondering what y'all think.

Matt

Not sure, I have pretty much just stuck with the manatee thread and nothing else. I do know they changed the organization of the forums awhile back.

There has been at least one thread about it and that thread even discussed the fact that the mentor groups are part of the downfall. As a matter of fact this group was specifically mentioned.  I venture out in to the other waters occasionally. I generally don't comment because I feel like folks more experienced than I usually have the answer covered.

Why is this group part of the downfall?

Coming off of a tibial stress fracture in 2000, stevebradley made his way into triathlon. Now he has over 60 triathlons completed and is one of the most active mentor groups on BT.

Not only is he a great athlete, he is a great mentor. I have been in his mentor group for the last two rounds and he inspires and encourages our entire group daily.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
