Originally posted by marysia83 Guys, can you put me down to the Earth (or whatever the English expression is...) or just simply tell me if I'm being insane or reasonable: I found this event that sounds like a very fun ride. Basically, women's bike ride across two states, there are two options: 157 km or 102 km. Details here: https://pages.rapha.cc/womens100-rides/rapha-womens-100-chicago-2The longest I've ever done was 25 miles. The event is in 10 days and now that I don't have kids (they're on vacation in Poland) I can ride any day, any distance. Still - 25 miles to 63 miles (102 km option) sounds like a huge jump. The other thing is, they posted an average ride pace 17-19 mph. My best time in the race was almost 18, this year's races were under 17, so far I am around 17 (depending on traffic). But that's, once again, with a smaller distance. Is it possible to train to 60 miles within 10 days? I do not want to fail miserably and won't do it if you tell me don't - I rely completely on your knowledge and experience. Obviously, I can always do it next year. But I just thought I would gather your comments/opinions

How do you time yourself on your rides?  Do you have a bike computer or?  I'm asking because there are three things to consider

  1. Riding 100k
  2. Riding for 17-19 mph average speed for 3.5 hours
  3. Group riding

How much group riding have you done?  This will not be a huge group since it's limited to 50 people but still.  *If* you are comfortable with group riding *and* you can do a 50ish solo ride this weekend, I think that it is doable.  It does sound like a fun event and it makes me jealous of your greenways!

I nearly signed up when I saw 2 donut shops! However, I decided against it.

What was stated is that it is targeted to "intermediate-level cyclist, comfortable riding safely in groups." I'm not sure how much group riding you have done in the 150 or so miles logged in the past 5 or 6 weeks. If it were just you alone, I'd say do it, as it would test you, push you, etc. Heck, my largest single day of training was about 70 miles for my century ride, so if you are comfortable on the bike for 3+ hours, than why not. HOWEVER, the group and intermediate-level aspects made me pause a moment and reconsider. I would probably look at it for next year, since it appears to be an annual event. Also, it might come in handy as your triathlon goals evolve. It could be a long training ride for you next year, built into a plan. I'm not saying that a long race is on the calendar for you next year, but I could see that happening.

Friday!!!

Let's go racers!!! Hopefully the DL is still empty!

I don't have it in my log but I'll be doing my first ever road race tomorrow. M Cat 4/5, 48 miles. Should be interesting. I'm looking to be a domestique for one of my teammates and get the hang of this racing business, but not sure who'll be there yet. They say it's not much different than our Saturday morning club rides, but we'll see.

Sure glad I am not doing a full IM this year.  I am so over training.  After my race on Sunday, I am taking AT LEAST 2 weeks off of swimming and no bike training (maybe just some commuting).  Hoping to ramp up some running.  I'm not sure why I am so fed up, but there it is.

Happy Friday and good luck to all the other racers!

Good luck to those racing this weekend.

I had planned to do my first tri of the year tomorrow but I just can't run yet.  They have a great kids race though so I'm going to take my son and make it all about his race for a change.  He has big feet for a ten year old so I told him he could wear my bright yellow Zoot shoes and he is pretty excited about that.  He has caught the gear bug early.

That sounds like a great Plan B!

Funny, DS1 was on one of his internet forums the other day and they were discussing activities that are relatively inexpensive to get in to but that you would be mocked by others if you don't spend a lot of money. Cycling was high on the list.

Forgot to tell you all about this...

When I did the MoabTrail Half Marathon last year there was a film crew out there.  This was no local film crew. It was the camera crew for the ABC show "In and Instant".  After waiting several months we finally got to see the episode. It tells the story of Nelly, the Moab Trail RD and her amazing dog Taz. It's quite a story and a reminder to all of us to let someone know where you are going and when you will be back.

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
